Take a look at the photo on here http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/south_yorkshire/4381628.stm

What kind of person can do that to anyone, then ask yourself what kind of person can do that to a pensioner?

There's aren't any words I can use here to describe how I feel towards the people that did this.

Stealing from him is bad enough, but to use a baseball bat and injur him in such a way?

Apart from the pain and physical suffering, that person will probably never recover fully from this attack. They have stolen his life from him and the worst bit is that they will probably get no more than a few years locked up.

Here's hoping those people get what's coming to them and end up on the other side of a sever beating while inside. I know that's wrong, but that photo alone has angered me beyond belief.

Disclaimer: Im not condoning this attack. It is a truly horrific crime for anyone.

I just wanted to ask why people always seem to say things like "How can anyone do this to a pensioner?"

Does it matter that they were a pensioner? Is it more wrong than attacking someone a bit younger?

The way I see it is that a vicious assualt is a visious assault no matter who the victim was. It is wrong full stop.

I hope the criminals get whats coming to them

Like I said, who could do it to anyone, in my first post.

I was highlighting that they chose one of the more frail and weaker members of the neighbourhood and attacked him with quite a weapon.

That's just pure evil!

Violent attacks on anyone are wrong, but this just shows cowardice and planning.

Hi lalaland

Im not disagreeing with anything you have said. I was just wondering if there is a difference between doing something this bad to someone who is old and to someone who is younger. You have answered my question well when you say it takes cowardice and planning, so this may be the reason why they chose someone that age.

One last query. Was the reason you posted this beause he was a pensioner?

That he's weak and could have been tied up or just intimitated, which in themselves would be evil, but to attack him to this level just makes me even more angry.

It's the evil in this society that prey on people that this that need removing permanently.

But did anyone see the story this morning of the two old ladies who saw off the intruder with their walking sticks! They gave him a proper seeing to by all accounts!

I can never understand the mindset of anyone who preys on the weak like the coward who did this.

I can never understand the mindset of anyone who preys on anyone - not just the weak!

If anything good comes out of this, it is the certainty that those who were responsible for this horrific attack will get their just desserts in prison, as there'll be no shortage of prison inmates ready to give the perpetrators a good kicking.

It is grim when any assault happens to anyone, but with older people there are a number of issues.

First of all the physical - bones are fragile, chances are the victim may have health issues anyway, skin's more easily damaged and healing is slower. In other words, a similar assault will probably have larger effects on a 70 year old than it does on a 17 year old.

Secondly - a pensioner may already be feeling fretful and fearful about modern life, changes in the pace of life, they may have lost friends, family living away, they may be housebound, forgetful, lacking confidence.... So when they get assaulted it can have a much worse effect on their psychological well being.

My mother was robbed of a few pounds in her late 60s, and it really ruined her confidence and she was never quite the same again.

The reality is that these attacks rob people of parts of what remains of their future. The assailants should be punished much more stringently than if they'd attacked someone younger.
