View Full Version : Anyone seen 'Broken Flowers'? Pilon 27-10-2005, 22:58 Just wondering if anyone has seen the new Jim Jarmusch film starring Bill Murray and if they thought it was any good or not...? EdnaKrabappe 28-10-2005, 12:44 If you liked 'Lost in Translation (even - got mixed up with a Genesis song!) ' you'll probably enjoy it. Very similar in genre. Although i wasn't convinced by the ending. MeGe 28-10-2005, 12:47 I've seen both 'Lost in Translation' and 'Broken Flowers', both of very similar style. I almost fell asleep on both... I like romantic movies but these two... are simply too boring for me... _Ren 28-10-2005, 13:25 Well I kinda agree, although for me Lost in Translation had alot more about it than Broken Flowers. Broken Flowers was very empty and sometimes awkward to watch (although I imagine this is what Jarmusch intended). I think the music in Lost in Translation helped the atmosphere alot. But yes, I was convinced with Broken Flowers, I don't regret watching it but wouldn't see it again. Hopman 29-10-2005, 08:45 Broken Flowers - what can I say? Imagine the sheer visceral excitement of watching Dulux emulsion (colour not important) drying on a sloping wall in shadow combined with the dramatic excitement of observing squash results on ceefax, and you're halfway there. I think to appreciate it best, you would need one of the new type of DVD player, particularly one with a timer control to play the film when you go out. Not being an expert on DVD hardware, I cannot give a recommendation on brands, but I think that there is an Australian model that has a load of special features, including the ability to play the action backwards - ideal for letting the Aussies watch the Ashes tour and seeing a happy ending. woodseatsjon 29-10-2005, 20:33 Broken Flowers is excellent: lyrical, elegaic and meditative. A bit different from the stuff the multiplex morons normally enjoy; probably why some don't seem to understand it... A bit different from the stuff the multiplex morons normally enjoy; probably why some don't seem to understand it... Woodseatsjon - I hope you are not insinuating that everyone who has posted on here and has simply not thought that this film is the best thing since sliced bread, is thick? I happen to own a multiplex card, which enables me to see films that I might not if I had to pay £6 each time, whether that be 'Broken flowers' or 'Dude where's my car?' However, the fact that I can make an informed decision about whether I got something or not without insulting peoples different tastes or intelligences, takes me out of the moron bracket! Don't make such generalising statements! GRRR!!! He only asked for your opinion on the film. blaupraust 31-10-2005, 16:14 I loved Lost in Translation, most of the people I know hated it. Maybe its just because I think Bill Murray is a god. Looking forward to this one though. StarSparkle 31-10-2005, 16:38 I think Bill Murray is a wonderful actor and, for me, lifts every film he is in. Even if the film itself is not very good, if he's in it, it's always worth watching. So I'm looking forward to seeing "Broken Flowers"! I loved "Lost in Translation" - ok, it was a bit slow in places, but that was all part of the beauty of it. I'm intending to get it on DVD and watch it again and again, because I think it's one of those multi-layered films that you get something different out of every time. StarSparkle ANVIL 31-10-2005, 18:24 I loved Lost In Translation. Bill Murray plays a similar type character in Broken Flowers, but i think Broken Flowers is better compared to Jim Jarmusch's other films than Lost In Translation. It's similarly paced to, for example Ghost Dog, and many of the subtleties are similar. I'd have to say that i enjoyed Broken Flowers. It was a nice steady pace and quite humurous in parts (although noone else in the entire audience seemed to think so!). I much prefer character studies like this to effects-laden blcokbusters though. Ditz 31-10-2005, 18:57 i watched Broken Flowers and it was brilliant. it was very convincing right to the ending. when he stopped at that crossroads, in real life he would have done that. if you remmeber he didnt want to know that he had a son and was very content with how life was already. when he stopped at the crossroads it was symbolising that he was at a crossroads in his life and by staying there in the road it symbolised that he wanted to stay there. (at the crossroads) it was very funny and very true and i love bill murray so maybe im a little biased but i enjoyed it. |
