The time has come to have your say...are you a dog or cat person? Why!! Do dogs make you feel safe and well loved and the long intimate walks are like heaven on earth...or do cats turn your crank...the sexy feline prowl...adorable shiny furry coats and their infectious meow and ability to cuddle up to you when you are needing it most. :D

Myself I am a cat person...the owner of two extremely naughty kittens:thumbsup:

Not enough options there for me. I have 3 cats but if I didn't work I'd have many more animals, including dogs. My dream is to have a small holding which I could use to house distressed animals.

We've got a dog called Toby who's adorable. He wouldn't hurt a fly.

I didn't use to like cats, but the neighbours of my best mate have got a cat called Max. It's the cutest cat I've ever known.

Don't care much for cats, they're very independant and they can stay that way for all I care - they can't sit still and stick their claws in you at every opportunity. I love dogs though even though I came close to being eaten by one around 8 years ago - left me with some nice scars! I like exotic animales as well e.g. lizards, snakes, frogs, scorpions..... Had a couple of lizards in the past (House Gecko, Berber Skink) and am contemplating getting another in the not so distant future, probably an Iguana.

I admire cats for their independence. Dogs are like little babbies.

well i like both really but like cats more

i like dogs because they will play with you and be able to pick up when your not feeling good, unklike cats

but i like cats because they are daft (well mine is, she turns corners not expecting to have doors in the way and runs full pelt into them, cute really) and they have freedom and they can sleep in your bed without taking up loads of room!! also love cats fur, mmmmmmm so soft. and when they want to play they cant really hurt you or get really nasty, like dogs can

so all in all due to their daftness and stupidity i prefer cats to dogs

my in put finished

I don't mind either but if I was going to own one I think I'd choose a dog.

Cat person, because:

- Dogs are smelly, cats clean themselves
- Dogs need walking, cats are much more independent.
- Dogs are noisy and bark at any slight thing, such as a postman, hence waking one up from an all morning student lie in. Cats on the other hand are nearly silent other than a meow when they need food.
- Dogs jump up and sniff you, which can be embarassing...
- Cats are "cuter".

yup i'm with t020 there. Although some cats may be horrible. most that i have been in contact with are cool. As a pet they are perfect. feed them, and then they just sort them selves out. no hassle at all. There's also the intelligence issue. I believe that the only thing that prevents cats from rulling the world is a lack of thumbs.

I don't mind walking, but in my experience it tends to be the dog that ends up walking me rather than vice versa...

I agree about cats being intelligent. They seem to learn quite complex routines and be able to remember where things are and how to get to them, even if it means opening a door by a handle or something. They often look deep in thought, though equally, they often look quite silly sometimes too!

It's not just opposable thumbs they'd need. To do what you say would also require a slightly higher level of intelligence/motivation than simply eating, sleeping and laying in the sun all day occasionally licking your genitals. Where's the drive, where's the self awareness, where the megalomaniacal streak?

I've had dogs around me most of my life, as me Dad shows and judges flatcoated retrievers.

In fact he's got the honour of judging at Crufts this year, so he'll be on the tellu.

Well I like them both -

Cats are less bother

Dogs are 'yes' animals - like 'yes' men only cheaper.

Dogs are, for the most part, stupid.

Whereas cats are beyond stupid and out the other side

- they just do a very good impression of inscrutable observation when in fact all that is happening between their ears is static.

Now a pig, that is an intelligent animal.

Cats rule, dogs drool... NOT!

I love both, but would rather own neither - the worst thing about dogs is that they really really grow on you and then they die too soon :(

Whereas cats just leg it to any neighbour who feeds them better :(

Wheres the evidence for such outrageous assumptions? Are we to presume you have conducted IQ tests comparing large samples of both animals?

Compared with??? Dolphins are widely regarded as the most intellectual mammal (after humans). What proof do you have of a pig's intelligence? Also, don't generalise - it offends me. Some pigs may be clever, but others on the other hand may well be of low intellect. You shouldn't judge animals in such a way, it is highly offensive.

NB. Sarcasm deployed in this post (lowest form of wit, but extremely fitting in this case).

have you ever looked at a cat deep in thought? You know it's sitting there, thinking; damn! if only i had thumbs, this world would be mine. However, as cats dont have thumbs, they just sleep, eat, and lick their genitals as a second choice to world domination. This happens to require less effort too, which all cats are quite happy with.

I'd be interested why you are so outraged by these assumptions if I wasn't so indifferent to you.

You are not to presume anything about me as you do not have the faculties to do so.

You may infer, however, that I have actually read, with zeal and interest, papers on animal intelligence, and it is the general consensus of the authors of these papers that the dog is generally more intelligent than the cat.

Pavlov demonstrated, quite conclusively that dogs are susceptible to very simple conditioning.

Also, dogs, whilst easily trained, have a very patchy record on reasoning and abstract thought - unlike apes, some mustelids, lemurs and some birds of prey and parrots. So in the vertebrate register of intelligence (however you choose to define it) with man (probably) at the top and reptiles (probably) at the bottom, dogs are down there with badgers and ferrets, rather than at the top like man and apes. Above budgerigars and geckos, but below some macaws and lemurs.

Well....

far be it from me to teach you in the peripatetic tradition, so I will defer to:
Salvatore S. Cullari, Professor Emeritus of Psychology.
B.A., Kean College, 1974; M.A., Western Michigan University, 1976; Ph.D., 1981.

Who recommends you read these books, if you actually are interested and not simply being the argumentative ignoramus your post paints you as:

Breland, K. & Breland, M. (1961). The misbehavior of organisms. American
Psychologist, 16, 681-683.

The Intelligence of Dogs : A Guide to the Thoughts, Emotions, and Inner
Lives of Our Canine Companions. Stanley Coran, Bantam Books.

An interesting account of animal behavior observation and interpretation
could be found in: Sebeok, T.A. & Rosenthal, R. (1981). The Clever Hans
phenomenon: Communication with horses, whales, apes, and people. Annals of
the New York Academy of Sciences, 364.

Denny, M. R. (1980). Complex behavior: Traditional comparative psychology.

animal behavior (pp. 249-266). New York: John Wiley.

Denny, M. R., & Ratner, S. C. (1970). Comparative psychology. Homewood, IL:
Dorsey Press.

Also, don't generalise - it offends me.

What leads you to believe I give a tinkers cuss about your thin veneer of sensibility?

Some pigs may be clever, but others on the other hand may well be of low intellect. You shouldn't judge animals in such a way, it is highly offensive.

To whom? The animals? Unlikely. You? See above.

NB. Sarcasm deployed in this post (lowest form of wit, but extremely fitting in this case).

Wit?

Wit. n.
1. wit, humor, humour, witticism, wittiness -- (a message whose ingenuity or verbal skill or incongruity has the power to evoke laughter)
2. brain, brainpower, learning ability, mental capacity, mentality, wit -- (mental ability; "he's got plenty of brains but no common sense")
3. wag, wit, card -- (a witty amusing person who makes jokes)

Your post is devoid of wit, of any definition.

Kitties! as i said on the last topic (yes i remember it too moon maiden dont worry) My dog is OK as far as it unconditionally likes you even if you shout at it or shut it outside and forget about it (accidentally i add), but it stinks the house out lets be fair and it is very thick. It amazes me to watch it pull on its lead and choke itself, coughing up allsorts of stuff when all it has to do it slow down a bit, and ive tried to show him that doing this will make him a lot more comfortable but its as if his brain just will not accept this.

My cats on the other hand remember things. They know when youre doing something you shouldnt be and they glare at you. They watch TV and know whats happening. They know which people have the biggest, most stable laps without even looking and retain this information. They dont forgive you if you so much as move when theyre on your knee for hours.

Definitely a cat person, although I do like dogs. I put it down to having grown up with a cat as a pet, rather than a dog - what you get used to I suppose.

We have 2 dogs and 1 cat, but I inherited 1 of the dogs - (Lady)she was my dad's dog and a rescue dog before that, when my dad died in 1998 we couldn't part with her, she now dominates our dog(Jess). Our cat is 11 year old now and there is no doubt that she is more intelligent than either of the dogs, although Jess is pretty clever as dogs go. Like many of the others I don't like that the cat catches birds and have been known in the past to rescue all manner of creatures from the cat (including mice) but that's nature and there is little we can do about it. Cats are independent and do things none of us like but I still prefer them.

:)

Cats are no way smarter than dogs.. Just more stubborn.

Dogs save lives, sniff out drugs, guide the blind, accompany people with love... Cats just sleep and then get up to the door to go looking for birds to kill.

I hate cats, I've nearly run a few over.. but I keep missing :D
