View Full Version : Last man standing to be picked at sports?

I have just recalled fond memories of sitting on a wall at school as two teams (consisting of my male class'mates') argued over who would be 'saddled' with Deavon.

It was very humiliating.

The only aspect of school sport that I was ever good at involved holding the magic sponge!

Just wondered if anyone had experienced similar at school?

Do you remember it fondly? Or has it firked you up for ever??
Or.. are you one of the tormentors? Was it fun to be a 'Jock?'
What are the rules of rugby?
When was that taught?
How come most men don't feel the urge to run away from an incoming football?

Explain! (please).

No, but seriously and I'm not trying to be "funny" here but I always pictured you as a female.

Swimming lessons. Aaaarghh. I was one of the last kids in the class to learn to swim (others had gone with their families and learned before these lessons, I hadn't), so I ended up floundering in the shallow end for weeks with no help watching the others swim up and down. That was embarrassing.

I'm STILL the last to be picked for sports! Or I hide so I don't have to play. It's not that I'm really bad, I could do it if I tried, it's just everyone knows I won't do it!

Hockey is the stupidest sport ever. Let's look at the stats:

1. Awkward position. You have to run around bent at the waist, with both arms to one side. This is a very awkward position to be in, and I'm sure can't be good for you.

2. Frustrating stick/ball action. It seems you have to hit the stupid thing really hard to get it to go any distance. I just kept scuffing the stick into the ground, sending jarring vibrations up my arm, adding to the sense of extreme physical discomfort, while the ball dribbled pointlessly about four feet away from me. Also, that stupid rule where you have to twizzle your stick round all the time so you only hit the ball with one side of the stick. What, is it not irritating enough already? They have to introduce pointless rules to make it worse?

3. It's crap being in goal. I used to like being in goal in football, but in hockey you have to cover yourself in pads to avoid being maimed (see point 4), then just sort of stand there and do a star jump when the ball comes towards you, hoping to block it by sheer luck.

4. High danger level. Hard, wooden sticks. Hard, heavy balls. Aggressive, hormonal teenagers. I rest my case.

5. It's not entertaining to watch. There's no beauty or grace to it, like there is with, for example, darts. You can't see the ball very well so it's difficult to know when they've scored a goal, and it always just looks like they got lucky. Most of it's just shoving and hacking.

I was always about three-quarters of the way down the getting picked pecking order. I'd rather have had the distinction of being last, to be honest. It's a badge of honour.

See, that's the point of hockey! When we played in school it was great fun swinging big sticks about and *accidently* missing the ball and hitting some one else (preferably on the opposing team, but hey...).

And if you can actually play a bit then you can also smack the ball really hard at people.

Sports was exactly the same for me. Not wanted on any team as absolutley useless at any sport. Spent the whole of Chemistry the period before PE painting a bruise on my knee to get out of it, eczma, asthma, no kit I'd do anything to avoid it.

Cross country was the worst, sheer purgatory. We used to short cut like mad buy some sweets in the village and amble back. I remember the Geog teacher shouting "you four are the only four that come back fatter than when you left".

I think it's youe avatar or whatever that pink thing is that makes everyone assume you are female. I picked up that you weren't from some of your posts.

I used to strive to be picked last. I would look bored, stare at my feet and generally appear not to be a team player. I would then be put in some unimportant position and left to daydream for an hour.

Cricket was my favourite sport, I invented a whole new trans-boundary fielding positions (deep longstop, cedar lookout, armadillo patrol).

As a small lad, my sports report for "Michaelmas" term read

"Football: [phan] often plays in back. I sometimes wonder what he finds to talk about".

At school I was always one of the first to be picked for football, but last to be picked for anything else! I think you had to have friends in high places and all that.

I was only picked coz I played fantastic footy and could kick the ball really hard, and it went where I wanted it to go!
I'll never forget facing the school bully in goal during a penalty and him threatening to beat me up if I kicked it too hard at him! :hihi:

I was always THE Last to be picked.. Cos I was always the "Billy no mates" at School, I hated PE as a result, especially when they played the English equivalent of Baseball, Rounders... Always ended up fielding but due to my poor dexterity I could never catch the ball... But to be honest for the same reason I could never hit the ball either on the few occassions I got to bat..

School life sucked for me on so many levels...
