Quick one

Does anyone know if a hotel is legally allowed to scan your credit card through their system and keep the details on file until you check out in case of any damage or Mini bar use?

The booking has been made with work and its all paid for but one guy who stayed at the same hotel near london had to pay £60 deposit until he left.

Yes, they can, same as a car hire firm for example. Best to speak to the actual hotel about their policy.

They do it to cover any costs you might not otherwise declare, damage to room, useage of mini bar etc. I normally tell them to whistle tbh.

I don't expect to be treated with contempt as soon as walk into an establishment that I am paying for the privilege of staying in.

It normally takes a couple of nights at least.

I think it is very reasonable to swipe your credit card. It is a sort of room damages deposit. And If you don't have any extras then they don't charge you.

Put it this way if I owned a hotel and someone objected to this rule on check-in and I thought that they might cause extra expense which would cause me losses I would refuse their custom.

If you hire a musical instrument or other equipment you have to leave a sizeable deposit of a few hundred quid. If you hire a boat, you get your deposit back when you return it clean and tidy with all it's crockery and fittings intact.

It's all exactly the same.
In fact I would say that it's safer to leave an impression of your credit card than a pile of cash because there is an electronic record of any transaction, which can be useful in any dispute later.

Cheers all

All sorted, After checking with a mate who works in law they are not legally allowed and you can politly refuse stating that "you would rather not give your details and agree to not use anything from the minibar"

I did exactly that and they said ok

Cheers again
