View Full Version : Accommodation needed near Northern General
ManilaPasty 25-10-2005, 12:49 My wife is an NHS nurse and has secured a post at the Northern General. She doesn't drive, at the moment and seeing as the tram doesn't go to the Hospital we are looking to find rental property close by. A house or flat IN A GOOD AREA Not sure where they are though, on a six month let would be fine, until we can buy our own property. GOT ANY ADVICE?
We would love to live in Beighton, Killamarsh or Eckington to be close to friends but that is not an option just yet, not until the wife sorts out the transport problem getting to her place of work.
We live in Plymouth at the moment in a student area. Its OK except the property prices are through the roof.
Anyway, we are looking to move anytime from November but more realistically the end of February, seeing as the wife will have to work out her 2 months notice here first.
ManilaPasty 09-11-2005, 12:10 99 hits and still yet no reply:confused:
To be honest i cant thinkof any nice areas within walking distance of NG.......but i might be wrong?

ManilaPasty 09-11-2005, 12:57 Got this reply from Scoop:
TherE are plenty of buses that go to the Northern General Hospital.
The number 75/76 for example, goes from Woodseats at the othe side of the city to the Northern General Hospital directly.
The number 20/ 20a goes through ]Norton Lees / Heeley to the Northern General.
Number 53 also goes to NGH from low edges / woodseats.
There are also bus services from the same side of town as NGH but I dont know too much about them.
You should ring travel line to find out which services go to the NGH from which areas then check out those areas.
Some services dont start until 0630am / 0700 am which may not be any good for your wife if she starts at 0700am.
WELL, ITS USUALLY 8AM
I also happen to know that the NGH has pretty good facilities for staff who cycle to work.
Good luck with your search!
What are the areas like that the above Buses go through ?

how about :
Broomhill =
Ecclesall =
Greystones =
Nether Edge =
RAARCHITECTS 09-11-2005, 14:37  I lived there for 5 years without any trouble
Each to their own

Im not trying to be cheeky, just sussing out the areas.
One of your local Estate Agents told me to stick clear of the centre- S1, S2, S3, etc. The further out you go S18, S19, S20 the nicer it gets. But the wife would still need to be about to get to work at the Northern General on public transport.
From reading other replies, I've found out the roads around the Hospital have heavy congestion and problem parking,
which may affect travelling there by bus or car, hence the cycle friendly policy at the Hospital; I guess!
The simple fact of it all is, my wife is precious to me. If moving to Sheffield means we can actually afford to buy our own home, put down roots, start a family and live happily ever after, then all well and good. But I won't put her in harms way. Hence my search.
I hear good things about Waterthorpe, Beighton, Killamarsh and Eckington on one side and Longley, Southey Green and Shirecliffe on the other. Now Nether Edge, Greystones, Ecclesall and Broomhill seem to be viable.
Hi ManilaPasty  (there's a username to remember  )
We relocated to Sheffield fairly recently, and were surprised at the changes it's gone through since we lived here 10 years ago. It sounds like your estate agent's info is past it's sell by date ;)
We needed to be accessible to the motorway, but wanted to be near to town for the facilities and social aspects, so we investigated pretty much every area in Sheffield before making our choice.
You list two groups of areas you'd be interested in but there's an oddment in each of them. We made an offer on a house in Eckington, and eventually wound up in Woodhouse (adjacent to and similar to Beighton) but took one look at Killamarsh and left pretty sharpish.
I would agree that Greystones and Ecclesall are probably a good bet, but Nether Edge and Broomhall have not kept their places in the popularity stakes as the property prices have risen here.
The Ecclesall Road area was once considerably run down, but it is now very much the place to be - especially if you do not have transport. It is a vibrant area full of independent and exclusive businesses, and the collection of 4x4s and expensive sports cars parked up there only reinforce this theory.
Have a good look round when you get the chance to visit - you'll be surprised ;)

We live in Plymouth at the moment in a student area. Its OK except the property prices are through the roof and when the drunken swines (or should I say scholars) are walking back from a night out, they're smacking off wing mirrors as they go. Or the latest trend of boogie boarding down the centre of the street when the leaf clogged drains cause the the road to floor in heavy rain.
Anyway, we are looking to move anytime from November but more realistically the beginning of January, seeing as the wife will have to work out her notice.
Hi Manilapasty - we have a flat that will be available from jan onwards in ecclesfield - its a four bed apartment ( too nice to call a flat) its above our business
ManilaPasty 16-11-2005, 13:04 Hi Strix. What on earth is that a picture of?
Some one sent me this the other day in reply to another ad on another site:
Hi ,
I saw your ad looking for a house.
I might have something to suit but I need to know more about your requirements.
I have a three bedroom 30's style semi detached house in the Greystones Area of Sheffield. area code S11. My previous tenants have now moved out and I am considering renting it out again if I can find the right person.
The previous rental price was £800 per calendar month inc council tax, water rates, broadband (wifi) internet, tv licence, gas and electricity.
Please tell me about yourself and your requirements if you are interested.
regards Xxxx Xxxxxx
Too steep at £800/mth
I think there's a staff bus from The Hallamshire Hospital to The Northern Gen your wife could use which may open up options to rent around Broomhill/Broomhall.
PS You might get a better response on here if you didn't mock people's attempts to help.

A bit of a nightmare round there though, isn't it?

Hiya,
Broomhill's quite noisy - a lor of students.
Ecclesall's quiet and cosy.
Greystones - quiet , a cheaper version of Ecclesall.
NE - a mix between Greystones and Broomhill.
RE: Your the later the 'S' the better - S2's alright, as is S8 - although some is a little close to Jordanthorpe and Batemoor.
Oh, you're looking at renting - all of the above are nowhere near the NGH - the other side (west) of the city, with the NGH in the NE.
Broomhill's probably best for transport and Greystoenes.
Rental - £700 pcm fro 2/3 bed in S11 - Hunters Bar, etc...
Out of those, I'd go with Greystones...
:)

That and Amesiac are great albums...
Two jumps, in a week, I bet you think that's pretty clever, don't you boy?
Look out for my sig - it's regularly song lyrics, and the album cover to match!
:D
ManilaPasty 27-12-2005, 13:30 Still looking!
Sorry for not replying sooner to anyone who sent PMs but things have been put on hold lately, seeing as NGH lost all the wifes paperwork and wrongly assumed she was on a lower pay scale when they made her the initial offer to go work there. Very frustrating, seeing as she gave them all the necessary at the interview back in November.
She re-sent them more copies and has now received a start date back, with the correct salary this time.......
...The 19th February.
(Its the two months notice she has to work first thats the killer)
We will obviously need accommodation by them.
dragon32 27-12-2005, 16:53 Greystones is very nice and if 3 people are sharing the house thats not a bad all inclusive rent of £266 each?
ManilaPasty 27-12-2005, 23:14 Thanks but we like our privacy. Sharing a flat or house with a total stranger it not even in the offing. Been there, done that, had the weeks shopping stolen from the fridge. Not funny.
I would have a look in hillsborough as lot of NGH staff live there it's reasonable and there are bus services to northern. beighton and killamarsh are ok but will be impracticle to get to northern by public transport.
there is a free shuttle between Hallmshire and NGH but it is very busy in the morning so not that good as a long term travel option.
ManilaPasty 03-01-2006, 00:29 Thanks for that Sal22, I was beginning to think this thread was practically dead.
Its getting very very close to our move and starting to look more and more like we may end up having to pitch a tent on Meadow Hall car park! Seeing as, judging from this website, all the property seems to be in the hands of greedy breadheads, out for a fast buck and unprofessional, unscrupulous, incompetent estate/letting agents.
Am I wrong?

Excuse me, but why did you post on this forum if you're just going to be rude at peoples suggestions. At the end of the day we're all here to help but you seem to either throw it back in their faces or expect too much. It's for 6 months which will fly by, then you can go look at your 'ideal' place but believe me if your wanting something excellent for your money as you think you can get renting then you are wrong, Sheffield's house prices are high for one reason, it's a desirable place to live. I'm sorry to be so blunt but this thread has annoyed me.
ManilaPasty 04-01-2006, 02:52 At the end of the day we're all here to help but you seem to either throw it back in their faces or expect too much.
If, by this, you are refering to the email I received from another website, asking for rent of £800/ mth, which is probably the cost of the mortgage on the place, and then some. How much do you think a nurses monthly income is, after NI and £650 in TAX deductions?
I'm sorry to be so blunt but this thread has annoyed me.
OK, your annoyed................... So am I now but apology accepted.
All I have ever asked for was help finding a safe place to live by the end of February, when the wife starts her new job, looking after the medical needs of the local community. She would also like to be near to a Catholic Church, if at all possible. I didn't mention it before but would like to add it now.
tinkabel - You highlighted my comment about pitching a tent on Meadow Hall car park, well pardon me for not putting in a :) at the end of it. It was indeed a light hearted comment, that may or may not, thinly veil the panic we are feeling about our impending move with no where as of yet to live. And as to the breadheads and estate agents observation... Have you read any of the other threads from the fountain of local information that is Sheffield Forum, under living in/moving to Sheffield? I don't see why you should get so upset, or rude, as it would appear to be the local consensus. Unless........... you're one of the above.
I would agree with your comment about Sheffield being a desirable place to live, having been there many times in a working capacity, visiting friends & relatives or ultimitly for pleasure. Having lived in Yorkshire for many years, I got to know the area quite well and always enjoyed my visits to the home of Stainless Steel. The history, architecture, greenery and warm friendly people opened my eyes and heart to the place. Happy memories fill my thoughts regularly, of Christmas shopping at Meadow Hall, when it finally opened, with record crowds of over a million on a Christmas Eve. Memories of the upheaval of the Super-Tram tracks being layed, pub crawls around the town, with a glass of 'Rodger n Out' from the Frog and Parrot, then off to the Lead Mill to see a band. Bargain hunting on The Moor, the 'twerlies' and their bus passes always brings a smile to my face and getting up at the crack of dawn to go do a carboot in the middle of a field. I loved it. Until, the call of the sea was tugging at the salt water in my veins (must of been the moon sign in Cancer that did it) and I returned to the bosom of the family and coastline that I knew from birth.
I also agree that the house prices in Sheffield are increasing; the disease is spreading everywhere. But if we can believe the prices of the property, estate agents there in Sheffield are offering, its not as expensive as down here.....Yet. Although, from reading the comments, Sheffield locals have put forward on this matter, in other threads on this website, it would now appear that you have to take the estate agents ads with a pinch of salt and expect price hikes ITRO 20% once they get you to stop looking in the window and go through the shop door. Then take your chances with them in an all out price bidding war. Puts me in mind of the Child Catcher from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Come and get your Lollypops just before the cage door slams shut. This is very disturbing if forged in the truth as wheels have been put in motion based on the comparatively low property prices advertised which may now turn out to have been a fallacy.
After the all important location, location, location, house prices in other areas is obviously a deciding factor for anyone who find themselves having to consider relocating, hopefully to a safe and secure area, having been squeezed right out of the property market of the area they're presently living and working. For key workers, like NHS nurses and fire-fighters etc, who just like the rest of us, want the chance of a secure future for them and their families by owning their own home, instead of wasting money on expensive rents and lining the pockets of buy-to-let landlords, the problem is further compounded. With no financial help from the government, outside the London area, with getting onto the property ladder and a lack of affordable property to live in, it is the local communities that are most affected when key workers have to move on to secure their future. Who are we going to get to put out our fires, police our streets and nurse us back to health, if they can't afford to live where they are needed?

Ah, now I understand
I think the saying goes: 'God made me the way I am'.It's the favourite saying of every catholic I've fallen out with
They seem to think it gives them carte blanche to be as obnoxious as they like, but 'you should try to be a better person' only applies to everybody else.
Good luck with your house hunting - may God bring you everything you deserve
Oh, and whilst you're having a go at people about punctuation... learn to use the forum quotes
ManilaPasty 05-01-2006, 22:28 :hihi: :hihi:
Ahh!! Assumptions, assumptions...... where did I put that tar brush.
There's nothing on here like taking something out of context and leaving some obnoxious (right back at ya!) comment to kill off a genuine thread of enquiry.
Kick a man when he's down.
Then the old Buzzard can pick at the carcass :heyhey:
Anybody want the bones for Broth? :suspect:
I would and could go on but its beneath me. :)
... and the horse you rode in on!
ToryCynic 05-01-2006, 22:49 Other possibilities would include Wadsley Bridge - reasonably cheap housing around there - http://www.rightmove.co.uk/viewdetails-5216713.rsp?pa_n=1&tr_t=buy - a three-bedroomed semi.
It's just around the bend - ;)
(Geddit?!)

PM on its way.
Dirtydog 09-01-2006, 18:49 If you are able to do a search of properties to rent, try Crabtree (S5). Its right next to the NGH, quite a few flats in the area - almost always some out for rent and its a 10 - 15 min walk to the nearest catholic church (St Catherines on Barnsley Road). It stands on a coule of regular bus routes into town, granted the areas surrounding are a bit down at heel but you might be able to stick it for six months. I lived there for five years with no major problems - heard of the odd house break in and my car was broken into once but that happens in most places. Its just a thought, it would save your wife a long commute to work on the bus and a small fortune in fares.
ManilaPasty 11-01-2006, 21:00 Many thanks Dirtydog
Dirtydog!..... Don't you wish you could do that infront of the fire?
Well, ask him nicely and he might let ya. :hihi:
