if you know my threads you will know I have constant problems with Wanadoo ADSL on my BT 'long line'......only connects about 30% of the day...or so I thought....

Maybe this a weird fluke but I happened to be about to make a phone call and was hunting for a number when I noticed the modem light stopped flashing and broadband was back on. To take full advantage, as it had been off all morning, I put down my phone and went back on the net....40 mins later it disconnects...a usual occurence, sometimes for HOURS at a time....and so I picked up my BT phone again and dialled out.....oddly, modem light came back on again and stopped flashing...

tried this a few timnes, every time my speedtouch modem went out of sync with Wanadoo and started flashing....if I pick up the phone receiver and just listen to the dialling tone on the BT line for around 10 seconds, broadband comes straight back on...and when it goes off just listening to my phone dial tone again sorts out the problem..

Now can someone explain what is going on there?

Is your DSL filter working? If you've got a spare, try that?

Got 5 different filters and tried all of them......no difference so far but at least discovered how to 'resurrect' my usually 70% downtime connection.......wierd stuff going on....

Do you have Call Minder on your BT line goldenfleece?

We had it and every time someone tried to ring us the call was directed straight to the call minder. Our internet connection would then be on and off until we had cleared any stored numbers/messages

No nothing on the line at all. Its the strangest thing ever.....
surely the phone itself is totally independant of the boradband signal once it gets through the filter so how could clicking the phone on and off a few times effect the modems ability to connect........I am BAFFLED....any experts out there who might offer an explanation...

to recap.......BT long line issue, terrible broadband connectivity as a rule that is down for most of the time....found that by switching the main home phone (which is connected to the same filter )on and off a few times and listening to the dial tone, it strangely allows my broadband modem to re-connect at once.......changed and checked filters, makes no difference.

perhaps this occurs on lines further than 6KM from the exchange? Is this a fluke? Should I sell my story to The Sun? Should I ring NICOLARSE on HAllam FM tonight and reveal my amazing tale?

BUMP!!

Can no one explain why lifting my telephone receiver a few times and listening to the dial tone miraculously restores my broadband connection every time it disconnets?

does unplugging the phone instead of lifting the receiver do anything?
