Do you think top sportsmen should sell their medals?

Mel Sterland ex Wednesday player has been trying to sell one of his medals on Ebay.

Look here (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2782062867&category=2885&rd=1)

The auction has closed and he has no bids.

Personally I think its a shame when sportsmen have to resort to selling the medals/caps they have won. Not sure of Mel's situation but I had heard he has been ill recently.

Any views?

It's always a shame when sporting heroes fall on hard times.

How many years can a professional footballer pull in the money they need before being forced into retirement? And let's face it, there are never going to be enough job s behind the scenes to go around when these guys can't make a living on the pitch any more.

Premiership top names can seemingly print their own money in the current climate and if they're half way sensible then they should have no trouble planning ahead for the future.

Are we seeing these cherished old names fall on hard times because they didn't make enough in their day?

Or are they guilty of not making sure they could survive after retirement?

Any ideas?

Last I heard he was selling them so he could start a business with his brother and that others could enjoy his medals

If it were me, that would have to be one business that I believed in heart and soul.

I'm sure he must require the money for some important reason. Those medals are very precious and what he has worked hard for. It's a sad story.
