View Full Version : Lincoln - Good Pubs Please
Ousetunes 25-10-2005, 10:19 My wife and I are having a night out in Lincoln on Thursday and I'd be a lair if I said we were going there to do the tourist trail and to have walks in parks and go for a cuppa in some expensive restaurant.
We are ofcause, going to 'do the pubs'. Anyone been? Which pubs are worth doing?
Any help appreciated.
Dave.

Just got back from a weekend in the very same city!
The area at the bottom of the aptly named "Steep Hill" that runs from the Castle Square has a number of chainpubs such as Yates and Walkabout and there are more trendy places further into the town centre.
But right in the Castle Square you can find the Wig & Mitre that's a very nice pub with excellent food and a decent range of beer (more choice would have been nice but they had Batemans, Black Sheep, Guiness and a few lagers when we went in).
There are some great pubs in Lincoln.
This guide (http://www.lincolncamra.org.uk/lincity.pdf) came in very useful on the few times I have visited.
Particularly of note is the Victoria and Strugglers.
Ousetunes 25-10-2005, 11:08 Thanks both to Carmine and Meaks for your help.
I've printed the CAMRA guide and shall be back to inform you what kind of unadulterated fun I had.
PS - Do laptops work in Police cells?
Kthebean 25-10-2005, 11:42 Go to the Tap and Spile, bottom of Steep Hill, turn right, 100 yards. Lovely friendly pub, nice ale, good quiz night :)
weenireeni 27-10-2005, 15:09 im from lincoln, and i would recommend (tho probly too latenow!) steep hill for quietness - lion and snake is good value, but the village pubs are better - pride of lincoln (next to frankie and bennys) is nice and does good food, as does the wheatsheaf and the pyewipe inn, at saxilby.
Birth-Peace 27-10-2005, 16:50 Also having lived in LIncoln I would say that definitely go to The Victoria on Union Street, best ale pub in the world.
For a good night out start off in the BailGate, Prince of Wales and then work your way down hill, stopping off at Walkabout, Ln2, and then go down to the cinema area, down by the water, forget what it is called, and there are some very nice pubs there.
Think thats it.
Avoid Ritzy like the plague. lol
weenireeni 27-10-2005, 16:57 no you have to sample ritzy, its brilliant! best cattle market in lincolnshire :hihi:
Birth-Peace 27-10-2005, 17:05 Dear God NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOo
Ousetunes 29-10-2005, 08:50 Thanks for the belated recommendations!
My wife and I had a most wonderful time, thanks to it being the warmest (nay, hottest) October day in living memory (or whatever). We sat outside Lloyds at Brayford Pool and it was like an August evening.
I can't quite remember all the names of the pubs we did although I can safely say we were in bed by 8.40 and not because we had other ideas.
We had lunch at 1 in Gino's which was great. Went to the Wig and Mitre, then into the Cathedral. We then walked down Steep Hill into 'town', to The Still (less said the better although the beer was good) then round to Lloyds. Incredibly, a bottle of Peroni and a pint of bitter came to something like £2.80. I said 'You've only charge us for one drink'. Not so, the price was correct so we had a couple there.
Heading back towards the Cathedral Quarter (does every town now have a dedicated 'Cathedral Quarter'?) and to some of the typical-townie places: Walkabout and Yates's. (Cider was the best option.)
We then did the pub in the main square near the Cathedral then the Lion and Snake. Had food in Tequilas and then went to a pub beside the B & B, at which point I'd had my fill. Bed.
A truly great night out, lovely B & B and spent about £240 not including accommodation.
Decent pubs, nice shopping area, beautiful old town and Cathedral. We also felt safe walking around. We will definitely do it again.
