View Full Version : Blanket/throw - bit of help needed
JarvisCocker 09-11-2010, 09:37 OK, I've completed a couple of easy projects (snood, scarf and hat) and the next thing I've decided to do is a throw / blanket for my sofa.
I thought I would knit squares of plain knitting, moss stitch, stocking stitch and a rib, make loads of them and then sew them all together (thats the plan anyway!)
Can anyone suggest what wool to get please.
I want something fairly chunky as I like knitting that grows quickly (I'm not that great at it but really enjoy it, I get fed up if I don't get results fairly quickly ;))
But I don't want the knitting to appear too loose. So I'd like to do it on big needles, but not too big if you know what I mean (is this making any sence at all? :loopy:)
And I'd like something relatively cheap as I'll be needing a lot of it.
:help:
What about DK on 4mm needles? I'm just thinking it might get too heavy to handle once you've done your thousands of squares if you choose chunky. If it's not gonna be that big, then go for chunky on the recommended needle (found on ball band). Good luck with it, look forward to pictures. :O)
JarvisCocker 09-11-2010, 10:26 Well I did wonder about DK cos I saw some massive balls of it in Hobbycraft and it would work out to be quite cheap. I never thought about it being too heavy to pick up once it was all done!! :hihi: I was put off as I didn't think it would be chunky enough and grown quick enough. I suppose I could get a ball of any old DK to start off with and have a dummy run before buying the job lot.
sophiec1979 09-11-2010, 10:30 wilkos in town have some big balls of cheap dk in a some quite attractive colours...they cant be more than £2 a pop. not sure why, but they are near the air freshner on the left hand side of the store.
best of luck, i started some squares for a blanket last year, and havent picked up my needles since srping :(

They are all acrylic though, sophiec and (dare I say you get what you pay for) a bit cheap feeling and rough on the hands. I would pay that few pence more and get some DK with a bit of wool in it. My opinion, that's all. :D
JarvisCocker 09-11-2010, 10:49 Thank you both for your suggestions.
sophiec - this is my worry that it will never get finished! It might end up being a small blanket for the dogs bed :hihi:
Plain Talker 09-11-2010, 10:52 I crocheted a big cream DK granny-square blanket for my best mate. I didn't do loads of little squares and then fasten them together, I just did one big one, and just went round and round and round with it.
She's absolutely made up with it. She can use it as a throw on her sofa, or as a "blanky" to snuggle under if it gets cold.
JarvisCocker 09-11-2010, 11:03 It was this that I saw in Hobbycraft, it's not DK it's Aran:

I think you have two choices. You can either do the blanket in the squares like you said. BUT you may have the worry of getting fed up of knitting squares or fed up of sewing them all together. OR you could knit the blanket in one piece, which might feel a little daunting what with all them stitches on (do you use circulars?) Have a think about it and then enjoy your project. I wouldn't call this a project to rush, it's one to keep picking up and doing a bit of every so often. Have fun. :)
JarvisCocker 09-11-2010, 11:12 No, never used circulars! Thats sounds a bit advanced for me!! I thought of doing the squares so I can practice my stitches and also so it can be quite portable as I'll only have a few stitches on at a time.

Brilliant idea! Go for it then, JarvisCocker  :love:Let me just look at the yarn you mentioned....... :)

Well............... I think it's all very nice, but I'm sure I would find something cheaper (and perhaps more choice) at a well known wool shop in Sheffield - It's up to you, chuck. Your choice. Still want to see photos ;)
JarvisCocker 09-11-2010, 11:22 Might pay a little visit to Gill at the weekend!

oh no, completely agree!
the only reason i suggested it was coz the OP said they were after some cheap wool to have a practice and see how it came out.
mind you, it might not be a bad thing it does end up just being for the dogs bed :(...but theres nothing like optimism! :hihi:

i'm with you Plain talker. One large square looks lovely. I have done a couple like this also a circular one. So much easier than fastening all those squares together.
Plain Talker 09-11-2010, 14:04 My friend was thrilled with the blanky I made for her, and although there were a few ends to sew in where the new balls of yarn had been joined in, it wasn't half as bad as fighting with hundreds of little squares.
JarvisCocker 09-11-2010, 14:09 Ooooo I'm loving this Ravelry site, I'm lost in a world of knitting patterns now and I should be doing some work :P
I've just found a lovely pattern for a blanket worked as one piece and using circular needles, I've never used these, are they scary?

Are you going to punish her, Group Leader? Are you? Will you make her buy lots of yarn, Group Leader? Will you? :loopy::loopy:
JarvisCocker 10-11-2010, 08:39 Consider my hands well and truly slapped! :hihi:
I'm only a beginner, it's not my fault :huh::hihi:

Yeah, like that's a good enough excuse. Your punishment is ten of the best ( that's ten of the best DK you can find :hihi::hihi: ):rant:
JarvisCocker 10-11-2010, 11:21 Ooooo harsh round here isn't it? And here's me thinking it's a nice little knitting community :D:heyhey:

drop (one, knit one, purl one) and give me ten JC!
I recently crocheted a blanket for my daughter (crochet not really my thing but I really enjoyed it). I did 4 lots of 10 inch squares in a strip of 7 so the blanket was 40 inches by 70 inches. It was in dk and an acceptable weight. An aran weight knitted blanket would probably weigh about the same in that size. You could do different stitches in each square and it is easier to sew up 4 strips than 28 squares!!
