I have a Panasonic machine, therefore need the type of DVDs with the minus, rather than the plus sign, for recording.
I've had no problems at all with the record-once variety, but for stuff you don't necessarily want to keep forever, I bought some DVD-RW discs.
Poped one into the machine and the the display comes up NO READ.
I've tried cleaning the disc, to no avail.
Could it be that they are dodgy discs? They were after all bought on a market stall.
Or is there some 'magic button' on the handset that needs to be pressed before DVD-RW will operate?
Hey mate,
I don't have a standalone recorder, just one for the 'puter. But I do know that for the 'puter, all rw disks need formatting first before you can use them. So maybe this is the problem?
never have any probs with any - however some lasers will not read "cheaper" discs.
something to do with the coating.
You didn't say what brand the discs were that you got?
Poundland on the Moor (and probably MeadowHell) had some Mitsubishi's for a quid, they also had dvd+/-r in a spindle of 4 if you want to try some other brands?!
(Mitsubishi discs are good IMO)

The brand of disc is Traxdata.
Never heard of them before.

I use Traxdata disks when I can't get Bulkpaq - cheap but seem to work ok. Could just be a duff disk in the pack? Are they all the same?

Traxdata discs are usually quite good IMO... Just don't buy dodgy unbranded stuff off the Markets and you'll be fine.

Are You Sure You Should Be Using DVD-RW?
I Have Panasonic DVD Recorders And They Use DVD-RAM Discs.
I Made The Mistake Of Buying DVD-RW Discs Originallly And They Gave The "NO READ" Message.
Check You're Instruction Booklet,It Should Tell You Which Discs It Will And Will Not Be Compatible With.
Hope This Helps.

Freebird - that could be the solution!
I'm afraid I pay little attention to instruction books. I tend to assume (usually wrongly) that all this new technology stuff should be so simple.
Thanks for all your comments
Freebird is correct.
Panasonic recorders do not support DVD-RW (or +RW). You have to use DVD-RAM is you want to record again and again or DVD-R if you want to record and keep. DVD-RAM can be quite expensive, around £1.50 each.

What model is it?
If it's an E50/E55, it'll write to DVD-R and DVD-RAM only.
Some of the more recent Panny models, such as the ES20D, will write to DVD-RW.

SVP have a no quibble returns policy should you opt not to get Panasonic discs and run into compatability problems.
