First of all - I know it's half term this week, just a coincidence that I'm posting today.
A few weeks ago my partner and I moved into a not so great area. Since I'm at home on maternity leave all day I get to see a lot of what's going on and it appears most of the kids round here just don't bother going to school.
I have no doubt that the authorities are aware of it but it would appear nothing is being done.
These kids are sometimes in small groups, but, worrying at times they are with their parents and clearly being allowed to skive off.
I would say I normally see between 6 and 10 kids per day of school age and during school hours.
Is anything really being done about it?
Strangely, I've seen less kids today now that they're off!

They'll all be hanging around the back entrances of pubs waiting for their "parents" to finsh their drinks.

according to education welfare officers, they do know about these habitual truanters, and steps are being taken to tackle the issue.

what a load of c###!

although i live on arbourthorne, my kids go to school over the other side of town, and due to all 3 being poorly last year it meant their attendance dropped below a certain level (80% or sumat) which automatically triggers the school to inform educaiton welfare. Said education welfare officer arrives on my doorstep, gets an earful from me, and is full of yes mrs xxxx no mrs xxxx, i can see you are a dedicated parent. How she could stand up and tackle an errant parent is anyones guess - she was scared of me!! and im not scary!!
when i asked why waste money coming to see me when a phonecall would have put you right, and resources arent being directed at targeting the kids you mention zebra (in our case, the kids from myrtle springs school for hooligans), i got the above spiel!

as a side note, a policeman friend of mine did a watch on a school (wont say which) just to observe the level of truancy...... about 50 odd kids wandered out of school at aroudn the time they should have been going to lessons after the bell had gone.
This happened every day!

and there was me thinking schools had a duty of care to their students once that bell had rung?

well from the news this week, some might say it's safer to skive off school than actually attend...
