We are a team of playworkers coming to a conference in sheffield soon and want to know the best places for eating and drinking that are close by ponds forge leisure centre? Any suggestions?

Banker's Draft is good, that's just up the road from there at the top of Snigg Hill, the beer's good there and the food is also good, if a bit on the dear side.

You think so,i always thought it was pretty cheap compaired to some of the pubs in town.

I'm not a big fan of the bankers, its to much of an old man pub for me.I would probably suggest the HA HA! bar in the peace gardens. The food is a touch on the dear side, but is nice, plus the surrounding are a lot nicer.

Theres always the other weatherspoons on Cmbridge street. Nicer than the bankers draft, cheap beer, and 2 meals for a fiver. Reasonably good food too, for the price.

And the service is probably better as well, I remember I went in the Bankers one lunch time for a meal, ordered Scampi and chips, no salad, HALF AN HOUR later the dinner comes, plate full of salad, and me being a fussy eater I wouldn't even entertain it without they removed the salad, so another nearly half hour later, they brings back the Scampi and chips, JUST Scampi and chips, no salad, as I'd originally ordered nearly an hour ago... next I ordered this chocolate ice cream thingy for afters, 20 minutes later the afters arrives, and it was plain vanilla ice cream, WTF?! I queried this, and they said "oh we haven't got any chocolate ice cream sir", I went "eh?! well why the chuff did you take my order for chocolate ice cream then?! Dozy pillock!".

It's safe to say I haven't been in there since.

Dunno why I recommended it really, apart from it being in shouting distance of Ponds Forge, which was the criteria for location of the venue.

If you fancy fish and chips I'm a fan of the cafe in Tony's chippy next to Ponds Forge - a no nonsense cafe with decent fish and chips.

However I can't say there is anything decent that fits the request at that end of town, unless there is somewhere down Victoria Quay.

Probably best walking up into the city centre proper, where on the pub/bar side of things there is excellent choice, ranging from cosy, traditional pubs with good ale and friendly atmosphere along with simple value for money food, through to modern, trendy bars with a more expensive food menu. An example of the former would be the Red Deer on Pitt Street (off West Street) and an example of the latter would be HA HA! Bar and Canteen at the Peace Gardens. Somewhere inbetween would be the Devonshire Cat on Wellington Street, Which is of a modern design but still has a proper pub feel to it, and must have the biggest beer range in the world ever (possibly), including about 4 fridges full of foreign bottled beers.

I love the Jumbo chinese buffet [near the crucible]; much nicer and better value for money than the so-called No. 1 Oriental buffet that is opposite Ponds Forge and Tonys chip shop :P

No1 oriental buffet just across the road, prices change throughout the day.

Starts cheap at lunchtime and then geos a couple of pounds in the evening.

Good belly filling place:thumbsup:
