Where did they dig you up from? :loopy:

If you want to go back in time you will find that the Owls ground is built on an old piggery and the original idea for a name was indeed going to be 'The Pigs'

Someone thankfully came to their senses and decided on the names they have today (Sheffield Wednesday/ The Owls).

Why you chose to start a thread that would stir up bad feeling between the two sides is beyond me

I have read before that the piggies (wednesday) used to have a nickname that was the blades- but i could never find anything to prove this?

I always thought that they were both referred to as the blades until a local journalist, who wrote an article reporting the results of an early derby, referred to wednesday as the owls of owlerton and it stuck. United kept using the original name.

All teams from Sheffield were originally called The Blades, back in ye olde days.

According to one of my dad's history books, United were called the steelers when Wednesday were called the blades. This was a century ago when Wednesday played at Olive grove. Apparently they used to change in rooms above the Earl of Arundel and Surrey Pub.

The original name "Pigs" came about because in the early 1900's Sheffield United used to parade a pig around the pitch before games as a lucky mascot. They did this on a couple of occasions... Only a handful of history books actually report this as it only happened for a short while.

The Blades were called The Cutlers (not the Steelers as sometimes reported). The name Owls came about when the club moved to the OWLerton district of Sheffield. Despite the stadium being re-named Hillsborough (it is still in the district of Owlerton).

Sheffield Wednesday were going to be called the Pigs before the turn of the century and, again, it's roots came from the fact that the ground was built on an old piggery.

There is a thread on here with quotes from the actual book that documents this but i can't be bothered to find it at the moment. Maybe the person who posted the quotes will know the title of the old thread :?

That's the usual response I get. However it IS recorded in certain record books. Whether the record books are correct is another matter altogether. I was actually told about this originally by a United fan & later looked it up for myself. So please don't say it's crap!
