I'm fed up of the amount of adverts cluttering up the net and although Sheffield Forum isn't too bad it does annoy me.
The Guardian offer an Ad Free deal where you pay a yearly subscription and you have an add free site. Have Sheffield forum thought about doing this? I'm happy to pay a small amount for this service.
I think the sheffield today site is the worse I've seen for the ads

I think the 'ad's' on the Forum are pretty insignificant - the Google one's on the left hand side anyway.

The ad space on the title band are fine, local and relevant so, don't see the problem.

I barely even notice ads on websites anymore, the banners are just blending in as part of the page.

Every so often I click on one of the google ads (even though google are shaping up to be the new on-line anti-christ).

Apparently this sends a penny to the collection box, which I don't mind.

It's to fix the church roof you see.

Hi, Deavon.

Best to edit that.

The almighty have filters which picks up posts from the sites they are on which might mean it's not here to help the site. I know from experience.

When you mention 'the almighty'; are we talking God, Google or the anti-christ?

Hiya just saying about talking about 'perusing' their ads for any reason.

Did the same on a another site and they have filters which gives them the info if anyone does so they suspended the account.

I have just been trying to spot where the ads are on this site.

Hardly noticeable are they?

Have to disagree with you Carcarsh with regards to ads on this site. They don't affect the site at all so why pay for a service that is not needed?

For someone who pays for an advert on the forum

www.maintainagrave.com

Its a cost effective way to promote my business. The adverts are generally all sheffield based so I guess we should pride SF for supporting local industry.

And we all love SF and it costs us nothing so I guess a little advert in the top corner is nothing - after all you only have to click on them if you want to.

You can go the way of subscription based on a VB forum quite easily, but you have to think about the complications.

What normally happens is subscription based members can get little extras like being able to change the title under the username themselves, bigger avatar, stars under their name to say they are a member, access to certain areas of the forum and of course adverts are removed.

This however creates segregations but can work really well on certain specialised forums, however I don't think it is for this site which is fairly topical and news based.

Hi all,

Yes, it's easy enough to set up technically with vBulletin but there's the whole hassle of administering the subs, where does the money go, even to the level of would Moderators volunteer to work for a subscription site?

Then there's the openness and accessibility - I've belonged to several subscription based sites over the years and to be frank they tend to be the first things to go when you run out of money. And I wouldn't want to be throwing people off for not paying their dues.

No, I'd fight strongly to keep SF subscription free. I don't think the ads are terribly intrusive and whilst the Google ads can occasionally be annoying they're piddly issues in the great scheme of things.

Hmmm, they don't annoy me that much, Sheffield Forum isn't good enough to pay for, I mean I'll take it for free but...you know.

They do (sometimes) slow/hang your browser though (unless you have ads disabled).

The little text ad's at the top left are useful.
Without it, I wouldn't have found a mechanic that I feel I can trust and not rip me off.

My car's will all go there, thanks to that little advert.
