View Full Version : Jurassic park - is this guy warped?
I'm watching jurassic park,
i have to confess I'm 17 and never watched it all before - never had the guts.
Was this guy warped or what :loopy:
It's gross and the idea is sick - I mean it's a good film, don't get me wrong, but sick.
How do people think these things up?
in what way? who was warped?

How do people think these things up? The only bit in Jurassic Park that I can think of that can be classed as slightly warped is the toilet humour scene....imo not warped nor sick, just a bit funny:hihi:
btw....the link in your signature isn't working...lol

Yeah, there are 2 HTTP:// in it.
:)
yeah - i know about the signature, have tried fixing it before but I'll try again...
This gets worse and worse... I'm sorry - I'm such a scaredy but I'm terrified lol
I just mean warped as in most horror writers are... how do you come up with this sort of idea - it's soooo scary lol
so by warped you mean clever? it is mainly stolen from earlier stuff with a modern twist
is jurassic park scary??
blimey.. dont watch nightmare on elm street you will prob end up in a padded room haha.
how is it sick? ..its just like a zoo..but with dinousaurs
crowefan 23-10-2005, 16:18 spielberg like most directors does nick ideas from all previous films of the genre before him.
so we see KING KONG,BRINGING UP BABY,ET,AND A score of other films given a twist.........of course the original idea was Michael Critchions, ( a dry as dust novel) spielbergs touches such as the children's humour and warmth, the twists in the chase sequences, the black humour, and convoluted drama such as the car in the tree is pure him

I'm never going to the zoo again :o
I didn't know you ran the risk of being eaten alive when you went to the zoo...
I know, I'm a wimp - I'm terrible and never watch horrors or thrillers and I remember being about 7 and having to sit in the other room while my cousins - all the same age - watched Jurassic Park...
I have only just summoned up the courage to watch it.
I empathise too much with the characters, and end up putting myself in the shoes of the characters being chased and eaten...
You're right - he is very clever with his twists and the way he does it, it's just... who thinks up these mad ideas... lol
ToryCynic 23-10-2005, 16:36 Works brilliantly, now!
:)
Plain Talker 23-10-2005, 17:17 I have to say, I don't rate Michael Crighton much.
(YMMV...)
He doesn't seem to write much else but books about "theme-parks-where-the-exhibits-turn-against-the-punters"(TM).
think on it,
Westworld:_ written by Crighton. Premise:- "theme-parks-where-the-exhibits-turn-against-the-punters"
Jurassic Park, written by Crighton. Premise:- "theme-parks-where-the-exhibits-turn-against-the-punters"
Congo... almost ditto:- Safari park, where-the-exhibits-turn-against-the-punters
IMO, about the only book he wrote that's worth reading was The Andromeda Strain.
PT
BrainThrust 23-10-2005, 17:33 I think you're typecasting (or whatever the literal equivalent is) him excessively, PT.
You're forgetting Prey, a very good if over-complicated novel; State of Fear, an interesting read about Global Warming, I may not agree with him fully but he makes a fair few good points.
If anything, you've give 3 loose examples where you've proven your point but there are a lot more not based on that premise, including the two I named and the Andromeda Strain.
What I think is Crichton's weakness is that he takes what is the flavour of the month in scientific circles, reads as much as he can on the subject and then writes extra bits into it about corporate evil and espionage and there you go, it's a novel. To be honest, Jurassic Park (the book) was more about corporate espionage than the dinosaurs turning against their masters. Westworld was perfect what what you said.
Congo, well, haven't read it so have to take your word for it.
Wilf
and westworld is a classic!!! LOVE IT :)
Hi Lotti!
I loved Jurassic Park when I first saw it. It really is a thrill ride. Lots of people said it was Speilberg re-making Jaws for the 90's.
Now Jaws is very scary when 1st watched... especially if you live by the sea.
Lotti, whatever you do do not watch Cujo
When JP first came out we went to the cinema to watch it, all the adults came in with kids and sat there eating their popcorn ready for the new, sensational film from Speilberg.
After the opening scene - people were taking crying kids out of the cinema! PMSL!!! absolute class!  The main reason I love it so much.

You're talking weakness in terms of what you think makes quality reading.
I think this is probably a very useful strength from his point of view, because it sells!

Girl-pants! :D
Phanerothyme 25-10-2005, 01:28 Michael Crichton always manages to crowbar in a few Basil Exposition and Hiro Protagonist characters to blast you with half baked science masquerading as deep technical knowledge. OK, it's not quite that bad, but I'm with PT on this. He writes grippingly but his subjects are a bit dross for the most part. It's like he somehow fears the selfsame technology he fetishises.
For 'theme-park-turns-against-punters[with sabotage!]' books I really rate the ones by a team of not dissimilar rightwing techno hard sf writers, Niven,Pournelle and Barnes. The dream park books, I think they are called. Brilliant stuff.
