I just thought I would give this a plug - what are other peoples impressions of it ?

Very nice cosy restaurant

Nice atmosphere

Very prompt friendly service if you have the set meal
Selection of lagers and wine (including tiger and chinese lager)

- even the loos were big and spotless ...

Not expensive

Some good pubs nearby ...
I would highly recommend it ...

Only had a quick look at the menu outside and they didn't seem to have anything veggie so we went to Mao instead. Have meat eater friends who love it there though.

I went there once - wasn't good enough for a return visit for me! Fairly average!

Me and me lass (both veggies) have been a couple of times. Enjoyed the food but thought the service was a bit offish. I'd prolly give them another go though, now that the prices in the Vietnamese seem to have gone right up.

i have made a break through, once you start ordering the obscure items on the menu and drink endless cups of jasmine tea then see the attude change
and also on sundays they have a great selection of strange baked and deep fried items to try we played russian roulette as we were not sure what they were, the peanut butter ball coated in seseame seeds is delish:thumbsup:

try the manifolds tastie but i wont say what it is or i'll put myself off

have been for late lunch today, there dose'nt seem to be lots of veggie dim sum but looking at the starters there are quiet a few, you could always mix and match dim sum and starters.(they do great mooli cake)
we had a few dim sum and additional salt and pepper squid and king prawn which was delish i really dont know how they keep there quid soo moist and not rubbery.

i spyed a group with a huge plate of freash crabs with a gingery sauce looked it looked amazing - think i may have to try that when we go again:clap:

I can't bring myself to go to a place called 'Mao', it would be like going to 'Pol-Pot's' or Adolfs...:D

I totally agree Anvil. It's on my restaurant blacklist purely because of it's name.

A word of warning for veggies (and otherwise) at Dim-Sum

I have been to Dim Sum before and yes I really agree that the food is the best chinese cooking in sheffield but as far as vegetarian friendly and the waiting staff go I would be wary in future.

I went last night (not the first time) for a veggie meal with family members, only to be told when some starters where arriving that they had then run out of salt and pepper tofu... some vegetarian spring rolls that had already arrived by now came full of meat, (when questioning this the, i presume, owner apologised explaining the chef gets confused when making meat and veggie at the same time... not that reassuring for veggies).

After getting the corrected starters minus one dish, we were then told that the main courses we had ordered could not be made, we then choose from a limited remaining vegetarian selection only again to be told another 15 mins later that in fact it was not the dishes itself it was a lack of tofu that prevented our choices.

It would of been much easier to tell us this at the begining with the first starter failed than after cooking all other main courses.

Finally after making a complaint during the failed starters and again for the empty menu remaining for vegetarians half way through the manager i think cheekily came to ask us how much tip we would leave rather than leaving the choice to us, we in the circumstances declined to leave one all the same.

Anyway as usual not to be too condemming the food that arrived was as typical very good, however i will be less expectant of good service and ask before sitting down next time if everything is available on the menu.....

and if veggie check the spring rolls carefully....

I was gonna say, Dim Sum is quite a reputable chinese restaurant viewed by the Chinese community. This is cos they do the 'dim sum', (a chinese tapas meal if u like), on a Sunday. It's kind of a cultural thing to go and have brunch together on a Sunday morning as a family. That's why you will see a selection of cakes and pastry especially made (fresh!) on a Sunday. Mei's restaurant used to do this too but because people don't buy it, they stop selling it. I think the other place u can get it from is Zing Vaa on a Sunday. (Btw, if u like these cakes so much, u can just go in and buy them on its own without eating there.)

I do rate Dim Sum as a place for authentic chinese food along with the likes of Zing Vaa and Mei's. I love their steamed chives seafood dumplings. Not many places will do it, neither does Zing Vaa, I don't think.

On a note about vegetarian chinese food, there are many options, but it depends on if the establishment serves it too. I know that some chinese restaurants make the filling of their spring rolls purely from vegetables, as standard. Another note about the mooli cake. I think you need to check whether it is entirely vegi cos I thought that it's standard to use dried prawns in them. Or 'lap cheung' (i.e. cured chinese sausages). I'm sorry to hear that some of you were disappointed at that restaurant, but... if you need a hand in picking vegetarian dishes, then please don't hesitate to pm me !

Sometimes the owners would only be too glad to make vegetarian options if only you know what you want. i.e. a plain steamed rice roll with no meat is not hard to make. It's just unfortunate these kind of options are not promoted well.

No, I don't work for Dim Sum, but yes, I'm chinese as well.

Thanks for the advice, to make sure I always ask if dishes are vegetarian, the problem in DimSum that despite this we still had problems (i.e. meat) and most dishes on the menu marked vegetarian ended up not being available. Usually I'm very happy with Dim Sum but on this one occasion I really felt let down.

I would love a chinese restaurant that would make more vegetarian choice available and until my ill fated visit I thought Dim Sum was making a good effort.

Oh well.
