View Full Version : Electrician needed

Mr H

I am currently in the process of buying a house that needs quite a bit of building work.

I have been told that there is a good possibility that the house could need re-wiring...but then again it might not.

Therefore I was wondering if anybody could reccomend a good electrician who could give a honest assessment whether we need any work doing; and if so, can provide a quality service for a sensible price.

Thank you.

I live in a 2 bedroom semi-detatched which needs to be completely re-wired. I have rang a few companies and my best quote so far is £2150 +vat. Does anyone know of a good sheffield eclectricl company who might be able to beat my quote?

dinkdankdo10

you should be able to beat that but that isnt far off what you will have to pay.

Ours is a 3 bed semi and we've just had quotes for a rewire. They all came in at around £1800 (except one ridiculous one for £2600 - some tradesman will try it on!).

We're having ours done this week so I'll let you know if I recommend the company by the end of the week!

I think the same person has quoted me the same price, even though my house is smaller!

you get what you pay for .. i have seen lads do it for less than 2 grand and make a real mess,
ask how many engineers will be doing the work and how long they will take.,
i would rather pay more and get it done quickly than 1 person come along and take him all week.

Tiggerchick

We had the luxury of it not making a difference if it took a whole week rather than a few days.

The quote I had from Craig at DIG electrical, recommended through JL, was £1800 and he also seemed like a nice guy. Unfortunately for him he was undercut otherwise we were going to go with him. We hadn't planned on having a full rewire as thought some of it was ok so price was an important factor as we'd not budgetted for it!

The one for £2600 was because there were 2 electricians on the job although it was going to take the same amount of time to complete. They sub contract through the week so assume they thought they'd do the job as a pair even though it only takes 1 electrician and a labourer to make good.

Our house has a lounge and kitchen downstairs, 2 normal bedrooms, a box room and bathroom upstairs. If your house is a similar size, even though it's only 2 bedrooms, I suspect the price will be around the same anyway.

I think our quotes may have been fairly cheap as we're not living in the property at the moment and all the walls are easy to get to. We've also pulled all the carpets up so the flooring can be accessed easily and the kitchen currently has no units in! I don't know if this makes a difference but it makes it a bit easier to do the job!

hey tigger. :)
i am glad you called Craig he is a cracking lad he also works in a 3 team so is very efficient and completes with very little disruption,
as for the pricing this is why you should have as many quotes as possible because final prices can vary so much,

anyway glad you got it sorted. :)

If this is to be a new or an alteration to an existing shower supply then you will need to use a Part-P registered electrician, you can find your local registered electrician here http://www.competentperson.co.uk/search.asp It is a legal requirement that this is registered with building control.

Thats not quite right actually - I had to make the journey with my newborn and I was on time 5pm, I had to ring your home number and speak to your wife to get your mobile number at 5.20pm, when I spoke to you you said you were held up and wouldn't be leaving the job you were on for atleast 25mins, I asked you where you were and you said the manor!! So what did you want me to do - wait atleast another hour probably more til you got to Barnsley!! No wonder I was angry!!! You should have rang and let me know you were going to be late and I would have rescheduled the quote, then I wouldn't have had a wasted journey - all it takes is a phone call to let people know BEFORE you are going to be one and a half hours late - not much to ask or expect !!!!!

Maybe you should at least say the job is in Barnsley when you're advertising on Sheffield forum? It's quite a long way to come for a job?

I need an electrician to fit 2 light switches (which we already have bought) in our house in Heeley.

It's such a small job even 'no job too small' electricians don't seem interested.

My Dad did the other switches but these are the landing switched, which controls 2 lights, and the bedroom which used to have an extra switch. It's a 30s house and all the wires are black, so my Dad wasn't confident to do it, and we don't have trip switches, so don't want to do trial and error.

Can't think it's more than a half hour job but willing to pay hour rate - just needs doing!

anyone?

Could be wrong bit it sounds like you may have Vulcanised Rubber Cables and need a rewire. I would suggest you use a qualified electrician just to check it out.
