I had a major accident a few years ago which required about eighty stitches in my face and head. My lips were hanging off, forehead open, bone out of my skull and my teeth knocked out etc.

After a few days in The Hallamsire and then treatment at the Maxiofacial clinic at Chales Clifford and Northern General, I went back to work a month later. You could hardly tell after a year. People who knew me before the accident can't tell now unless I point it out. It's not 'plastic surgery', just very skillful surgeons.

I went for my penultimate fitting for my new teeth yesterday. Should have them by Christmas:clap:

Still under the care of max fax at Charles Clifford to see if they can get some nerves working again. A quarter of my scalp is still a bit numb. Told them I can live with it but they are interested.

Moral of the story: things are never as bad as they seem and the care you get in Sheffield is excellent. We have some of the best here. We are lucky.

If I were the family of this young girl, yes I would be very concerned, but she will be OK I'm sure/hope.

edit: if the nurse who I asked to 'clean me up a bit' is reading this, thank you for your patience. I didn't realise how bad I looked untill I got to a mirror two days later. You did a good job of reasuring me.

Bloody hell! That sounds awful for you.
What the hell happened to you for you to come up with those injuries?

Good on you for getting better though- hope you are feeling a lot better by the way and continue to do so- so good luck from me as well.

I'd like to see the pics if you dont mind of course?

Fell off a dormer onto a sloping off shot roof, chin first. Thats what cut my lips, the slates. Then rolled off and headbutted the patio. Thats what did my forehead.

Should be dead really. Didn't break a bone but apparently was xrayed to f**k while unconcious.

So about 25 foot in two stages, head first.

Bloomin eck Gabble. I can't help but think that you have gone through one hell of a lot of pain to get where you are today. Life is so precious isn't it? BUT.......all you want for xmas is your 2 front teeth and maybe a few more besides. Good luck my friend and make sure you celebrate in style. It is so good to hear about wonderful results and accolades for the great medics that we are so lucky to have. Thankyou for sharing your story.

It is good to hear from someone who is delighted with the NHS. This type of service could and should be available to every one.If the govt. got it's act together and put the money on the shop floor (as it were) and not into daft schemes and endless initiatives which go nowhere.
Bit of a rant but delighted for Gabble.

Blimey, Gabble doesn't do things by half does he?! Glad to hear you're on the mend. And well done for drawing attention to how good the healthcare in this city is... we get so used to moaning about everything, that sometimes we forget how lucky we are.

(Although you've made me a bit ashamed of myself now I remember my bitching at small NHS gripes!!)

This post made me squirm Gabble. did the husband come home unexpectedly?
Hope all goes well with the rest of the surgery and dental work, it's a fact that sometimes we don't appreciate the skills and dedication of the medical profession until we need them, it's good to be reminded.

an excellent testimony to the skill of the plastic surgeons here in sheffield........they will be truly chuffed to know their skills are so appreciated.
I think i posted on the other thread about the skill of the plastic surgeons in minimising the scarring........times have moved on in recent years.....the micro sutures they use are a nightmare to handle as a scrub nurse cos if you drop em, they are blighters to pick up again!!

great post gabble....

My sister had a horrific accident involving a horse (very complicated to explain unless you know how horses behave!), in which she flew a few feet in the air (from standing), and broke her collar bone and her jaw in several places - she was incredibly lucky but her face was a total mess (but thats partly genetics :hihi: )

Anyway, this happened on New Years Eve when she was 16 and it was the first NYE my parents were going to let her go to the pub with her mates and she'd had everything planned for ages and was really excited. The staff at Hallamshire where she in fact spent NYE were terrific and more than made up for her missing out (so I'm told) and her face is now back to "normal" thanks to the excellent surgeons we have in Sheffield.

Oddly enough, people say we look a lot more alike since she had her face rebuilt :suspect:

Sheff minx,
glad to hear your sis is ok!

its great to hear positive stories about how good the nhs is in sheffield....all we ever get these days is how bad it is! everyone is eager to complain, but like most public services, the praise is few and far between (and im just as guilty of this as anyone, before anyone has a go!)

Yay for the nhs!
