View Full Version : Sheffield rag mag
Does sheffield stiil have a rag mag ?
the twicker i think it was called, came out every year about October time
used to enjoy reading the jokes.
but havent seen one for years do the students still do the mag
r has it disapeared?
the company i work for used to supply scafolding for rag week (what they needed scafolding for i dont know) so we used to get the mag for free but that stopped and now no twicker..
Sam Miguel 30-01-2004, 20:08 Alas, as far as I know, The Twikker finished many years ago. Unless they have downsized it considerably and only do enough copies to pass around a small bar, it is well dead.
Shame, because it was great. Everyone used to buy a copy, or so it seemed. Also: can anyone remember the Nottingham equivalent?
What did they call that one?
bulldog D 30-01-2004, 21:28 Yep! it's gone but not forgotten neither was pyjama jump night!
an interesting evening had by all until the p.c brigade closed it down.
I think Twicker may have stopped for similar reasons
Martin_s 30-01-2004, 22:43 Heh heh... Oh a topic I have the info' on... :)
As an ex Sheffield Raggie I know that there were a whole load of reasons why the Twicker hasn't been about for a while..
One of the biggest problems is the difficulty in distribution because none of the shops would take it on.. and because I'm still involved in the Rag world on a national level it's not just Sheffield...
I'm not sure if it's making a come-back this year but if they are I'll let you know :)
Why don't they use the guys that distribute the big issues?
i always thought the distrabution was just students on street corners ?
atleaste with the twicker we got the spider busses.

the pyjama jump was a fun night until the idiots took over it,eg the chretins who thought it was a good idea to block the trams on west street, resulting in the death of a student, or the morons who went along tipping phone boxes over etc, and the A & E being filled to capacity, and ambulances being tied up resulting in my late father in law waiting ages after having a heart attack.
what was a fun charity raising night was ruined by the mindless few,as is the case with most things these days

As for the spider buses though, those were donated as a result of both PJ and Twicker.. and there were a large number of local charity projects that benefitted from receiving them..
There simply isn't the income to make that possible anymore but just to put things in context.. Student Rag groups raise somewhere in the region of £2 million a year for charities locally, nationally and globally... Just so no-one figures they're a waste of time...

If by the pc brigade you mean the police then you're dead right. It was stopped because it became too popular and students were coming from all over the country. Each year there were more and more people and the hospitals' a&e departments were becoming more and more over stretched (hypothermia being one of the causes, students in nighties coupled with sub-zero temps and copious amounts of alcohol). The police were having to fund more and more patrols to keep an eye on the students.
Eventually, the police objected as did the residents of those areas round the student halls.
You're right though, it is sadly missed.
I have a tidy collection of rag mags collected during my student days from Sheffield University to Notts etc . . Does anybody know if Sheffields 2 uni's still publish them? . . i seem to remember there was some confusion at one point about banning them because they printed politically incorrect jokes.
ms de meaner 13-04-2004, 12:56 sheffield uni still does a RAG mag, but i'm not sure about Hallam
:)
Ned Ludd 14-04-2004, 14:47 They may become quite collectable as I think their time has passed along with saucy seaside postcards, Benny Hill and the Carry On films.
There's no place for innuendo in an age when everything's full on and in your face is there? Rag mags were quite daring in a more innocent age and occasionally caused outrage as a result.
When Graham Norton's on mainstream TV there's not much the Twikker can offer, methinks.

Ned Ludd 15-04-2004, 09:17 ........and thereby proving that there's no place for the subleties of double entendre today!
Hey,
Just thought I'd let you know that Twikker has been restarted this year, and will be sold either over the summer or early next uni year.
I'm hoping to take over as editor next year, so with any luck it will be back to stay!!
It's starting off quite small, but if it gets the support it used to, it shouldn't take long to get it back to it's old size!
If anyone wants to know about distribution etc, feel free to contact me.
