View Full Version : Parking in City Centre
I'm staying in the IBIS hotel tomorrow night but they have no parking. Apart from paying £4.50 to leave my car in Ponds Forge (which isn't exactly safe!), are there any other places nearby I could park?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

*Twinkle* 30-01-2004, 16:26 Sorry, I haven't any idea... I knwo there's parking at Charter Row... Its like 40p per 15 minutes or something ridiculous like that... I don't know if they allow overnight parking either...
The_Bear 30-01-2004, 16:43 I think that the car park behind the Bristol Hotel/petrol station (just across the road from Ibis) is quite secure.
Is it free? How do I get to it coming down Barnsley Road and through Pitsmoor?
For proper directions, not just a map, try:

It's ok, I'm having an early night tonight so I'll just go for a wee drive around town to find it instead of hitting the pubs.
Ok... real reason, I'm skint.

Few places that are safe to leave your car are free. IMO it is worth paying a charge if the car park has some security measures.

Might be worth considering leaving it at one of the park and rides and getting a tram into the city.
Although I do have one handy hint which is a good alternative to the NCP at Charter Row. Park on Wellington Street opposite the Devonshire Cat/Devonshire Courtyard building. You can park there free overnight, charged parking starts at 8am or 8.30 but you can prepay it the night before if you want a couple of extra hours in bed. Devonshire Courtyard has 24 hour security at their front desk on a weekend and on weekday evenings and Victoria halls opposite has CCTV cameras that cover the area, never had any problems leaving my car there.
bigpockets 31-01-2004, 09:04 Park in the Novotel underground car park - they never check if cars are customers and it's just up the road from ibis
jenhoppy 03-02-2004, 14:31 Im going to have a moan!!(for a change)You all seem to b having problems finding somewhere to park near to Ponds Forge ,well i have a friend whoo lives on parkhill and the few parking spaces for residents are constantly taken up by shoppers who walk into town and workers who park up and take the tram. Its so annoying!!I do my friends shopping as she is disabled and have ended up with 2 fixed penaltys because of having to park on the "yellow line"I really wish that the council would issue permits to residents and that the inconsiderate motorists who take up residents spaces would *ugger off and park elsewhere for 7 hrs at a time!A cheek if you ask me!I think the park and ride would be the best option for you at least you know the car will be safe!
GLAD I GOT THAT OFF ME CHEST!!
I ended up parking in Ponds Forge. Stay at the hotel and you can park in ponds forge for £4.50, for 24 hours.
there's 2 spaces behind my boozer what time you arrivin?
sorry just realised its an old post :(
About 73 hours ago :P
Thanks though. I'll be staying at the hotel again on the 14th of this month I think, would I be able to leave it there? I'll be sure to start that night in your pub
What pub is it?
qazitory 01-06-2004, 19:21 I was wondering if it was better costwise taking the car or bus to work in town?

If someone does know the answer to this, I doubt very much they'll give away the secret to thousands of others on here! They'll want to keep it quiet so their place will be there for them tomorrow.
DaBouncer 01-06-2004, 20:41 Well I know how to get £2.50 parking in sheffield centre for the whole day.
Will sell the info to anyone willing to pay me £100

Captain_Scarlet 01-06-2004, 21:54 Cole Brothers multi storey car park.
Expensive, unless you buy sommut and you get a reduction.
you can buy anything, evne like 40p, and it'll get ya 1.6 quid off the ticket price or sommut.
The euro Car parks behind the Firestation aren't too bad... And close to the centre.
1Man&hisBMW 01-06-2004, 23:44 Do you know the old Mercedes dealers on Hanover Way (now Arctic Spas) The car park behind (which used to be Mercedes car park and storage area lets you park for £2.50 all day.
I personally don't pay anything to park in town, because I use a friends carpark for nowt :)

Anywhere know where to park near the Showroom cinema. There used to be free parking after 7:30pm in the Sidney St car park but it's been tarmaced and changed to a 24hr pay and display. There's a small car park oppsite on the corner that's free after 8:30pm but it's only got about 10 spaces.
TIA

You can park (nearly) anywhere with a single yellow line after 6.30pm. Meter bays are free after 6.30 too.
qazitory 05-06-2004, 22:50 I had a look around the city centre a few nights ago, it seems most metre parking is free after 8.30pm now. There is a car park behind the NCPM which is free after 8.30pm, that is pretty near the Showroom.
The pay and display car parks always were 8.30, but have the on-street meter bays changed from 6.30 now?
Bluelunar 04-10-2004, 18:04 does anyone know where it is cheapest to park the car during the day? i go to hallam and thinking of driving to uni.
is the new train station carpark not a good option? cuz its quite near to my uni but i bet it would be expensive. does anyone know how much it is?
thanks for ur help!
I read the City Center Urban Design Compendium recently. It's 238 pages long... usual stuff for these things. There are just 2 pages about the infrastructure !!!
Says it all though./ It basicly admits that there is MASSIVE room for improvement and that the carparks are rubbish....
I never thought I'd ever see a council admit that!!! Maybe we'll see some genuine improvement.

£7 per day for the station car park. If you're coming from outside Sheffield then the park and ride off the Parkway is probably cheapest.

I know this is an old post, but I, and every other driver, pays nearly £200 a year road tax for the priviledge of being able to park where ever I choose (providing legally). I'm sorry that your friend is disabled, but she is not alone in not being able to park bang outside her house. I live at Hillsborough and match days are shocking, but I appreciate that the people parking on my road have valid road tax - that's my hard luck. And as for fixed penalties, you only get them if you park illegally. A lot of people think they have a right to park outside their house. They do not.
There is a cobbled car park just up the road from the Synters showroom at West Bar that is very cheap, and only a short (but uphill) walk from West Street.
