Go to morrisons, or where ever, and go to the aisle where they sell cake mixes, next to the Batter mix (for fish etc) there should be Dumpling mix, in a orangy box...it's dead easy you just add water and they taste fab, about 60 I think.

Dumplings are just Suet pastry realy.

The basic recipe is :

Twice the weight self rasing flour to beef suet.
Add a bit of salt, pepper and some herb (optional)

mix together and gradually add cold water until it all sticks together in a firmish dough.

Roll into little balls (about twice the size of a walnut) and drop into your stew, they take about 25 minutes to cook, and will swell-up and go all fluffy.

Don't buy dumplings as they have loads of additives and crap in them, and cost way more than making your own.

low fat dumplings for a stew (or wot ever you want to put them on.)
you need about

8oz self raising flour
2/3oz light veggie suet
bit of salt
egg (this is the secret ingredient)
and water til it mixes but is not soggy

to this if you want to you can add fresh ground pepper or herbs of any kind (though this can make you a bit farty) or a bit of mustard or garlic and or chillies

Divide evenly and splot off spoon onto stew and cook for 20/30 mins or til nice and brown. @about 6 on oven.

Sorry but i'm not precise on cooking i just throw it together and see how it comes out and this works lovely.

Hope you enjoy

Sorry nick but i wouldn't handle them. They then come out all prescise and the are meant to be crusty and all uneven, just drop them off the tablespoon you mixed them with, you get right size and everything.

Please don't buy mixes or frozen ones, dumplings are just the easiest thing to make. Give it a try! Keep it simple and follow the instructions on the side of the Atora Suet packet.

Make sure that stew is nice and ready before you pop them in though, the extra 20 minutes finishes it all off a treat.

Egg in dumplings Mo? :suspect:

My own special additive in stew? A couple of glasses of cheap French table wine bunged in just when it all starts to boil, then leave it all for 3 hours, simmering gently. Yessss!

Tis ok no problem. And a multi tasking man. Do they exist??

You don't have too, but it makes them a bit healthier. I also cut then amount of suet and use lower fat veggie suet. Not that i am a veggie, no way i love my meat far too much.

Or you can make cobbler to go on top instead.

Oh yes, that's another myth put around by women - like the pain threshold one.

I've never met a woman who can do more than one thing at a time, unless one of the things is talking. ;)

Why cook when you can just dial

As for Additives & preservatives, unless you grow your own produce in a patch of land you know is clear from any chemicals and isn't going to have Pesticides and god knows what else blown onto it over the years....you can hardly call cooking anything 'natural' anymore, can you?

Good luck with those Dumplin's :D

I used to make Jamaican sweet dumplings years ago, but i've forgotten how...
