some information i'm looking for:
what is the term "learner legal";
what do you need to do to a bike to make it learner legal
as it stands i'm 16 right now, looking on buying a (second hand) aprilia rs125. I imagine that it's derestricted as I'm buying it from a "proper biker".
I know I won't be able to ride it until I'm 17, and I know I need to do my CBT before I get on it, but I'm concerned about restrictions etc.
(also if it is unrestricted how much does it cost to restrict it? and would anyone notice if it was unrestricted?)
also any knowledge on how much I should offer for an R reg RS125 would be appreciated.
ta :)

whats the engine size is it 50 cc
The law on bikes for learners doesn't just stipulate the engine size (125cc or smaller). It also has stipulations on the horsepower of the engine (and I can't remember the figure you need to know, but it should be easy enough to look up) as some 125s are tweaked to produce silly bhp. Aprilia have in the past produced some race replica bikes which have higher bhp than is legal for a learner. I think there also used to be a rule about torque, but I don't know whether this one is still in operation (I last rode 9 years ago and never rode a 125 as I could get round it by being older).
In terms of looking for a bike to learn on, call Roadrunner (or any of the other bike teaching schools) or go to a dealer and they'll go through the rules and regs with you. It would be a real shame for you to get a bike and then find it wasn't in the rules, so don't fell in love with a bike just yet. Better to get the learning bit out of the way on a small cc safe bike before you go for a flashy one!

Riders under 21
A learner motorcycle rider under 21 has the option to take two types of test:
*
subcategory A1 light motorcycle which allows you to ride motorcycles up to 125cc (11kw/14.6bhp), or
*
the standard category A which allows you to ride any motorcycle with a power output of up to 25kW (33bhp) and a power to weight ratio not exceeding 0.16kW/kg. You will be entitled to ride larger powered motorcycles after 2 years as a full motorcycle licence holder.

trial bikes probably better sized for me but they dont look as beauuutiful (or go as fast)(not that i'd be riding irresponsibly)(cough)

Like I said check out the local bike shops and local private sales even though there out of your price range see what you like. Then see what there going for on ebay or autotrader. Be careful though and take someone with you who knows bikes if you can, because is easy to fall in love with eye candy on a bike only to find out its a total basket case.
