Today I went to the latest exhibition at the Millennium Gallery called "Restless Times: Art in Britain 1914–1945". It concentrates on the art showing the social history of Britain in those times with a wide variety of media from books to railway posters to paintings.

It's an excellent exhibition and what's more absolutely free. There's a lot to see as the exhibition is huge. I'd urge anyone with an interest in the art or history of the period to go and see. It's already well attended proving Sheffield is far from being a cultural desert.

Yeah I had a look round week before last and thought it was very good. Really worth a visit, there's some very well known work there too.

Some of the big exhibitions at the Millennium have been disappointing, but they got it right this time.

My only gripe is that many of the oil and tempera paintings are displayed behind glass when there is no need for it. They always look better in unglazed frames.

I'm looking forward to going to this. There was a fine programme on BBC4 about the WW2 war artists a few weeks ago, the mental remnants of which will tie nicely into a trip to this exhibition.

Sorry! SF server went all dodgy and unavailable and I got a touch of mouse-mania. Hitting it with a hammer evidently does the trick!

As far as I know there's still another programme about British War artists to come as part of "The Genius of British Art". I visited Stanley Spencer's Burghclere Chapel a few weeks ago and there was a sign up saying Jon Snow had just finished filming there for the series. Definitely one to look out for.

BTW there's a nice Stanley Spencer painting in the current Millennium gallery exhibition although it's one of his purely decorative 'potboilers'. There's also a painting by his wife. Oddly there's none of his war paintings though plenty of war art by other artists.
