View Full Version : Parking tickets given out to those who park on Herries Road.
royjames 19-10-2005, 20:23 I was one of those who was unlucky enough to get a ticket for parking on the road outside the Northern General today,I wonder where the hell one is supposed to park if the car parks are full and you have to spend some time at the hospital?
Oh and the ticket said I was causing a obstruction due to being parked on double white lines well I did not see where the obstruction was but still its the law I suppose so I will have to pay the £30.
Tsk Tsk Mr James, You should know better..
GabbleRatcht 19-10-2005, 22:08 Trying to get parked anywhere around Hallamshire/ Dental/ Jessops / Childrens hospital is a nightmare. It's sometimes difficult to find double yellows to park on ;)
Seriously, why build all the facilities in one place and with no parking. I know we have more cars now than when they were planned, but public transport is not always the option.
Especially when you have a woman in labour in the back.
If there's a football match on you can park anywhere and NEVER get a ticket. You can park on corners, pavements, spare land, kids parks, on top of other cars! anywhere you like. In fact if your a football fan and there's a match on you automatically become exempt from the law. *******
Where, on the central white markings, there is a solid white line on your side and your parking causes a vehicle to cross the line, then you are indeed causing an obstruction. That's what the ticket was for.
Parking at the hospital is diffucult though I agree.

Parking on double yellow lines on WOLSELEY ROAD off Abbeydale Road Friday mornings you are exempt from the law,
so I've been told******* WHY:
I have noticed the increase in parking in that area on Herries Road and was interested if it was illegal or not.
I know in the Highway Code it says it is illegal to park on roads with any unbroken white line but in an idle moment I had a quick look at the Traffic Law itself.
It is a bit more complicated than the Highway Code states.
It turns out you can in fact park on a road with an unbroken white so long as there is more than one lane in either direction.
Now that section of Herries road does have two lanes in both directions, albeit one of them is shared.
I suppose it all comes down to how you interpret 'more than one lane in either direction', it seems a bit of a grey area to me with these shared lane situtions.
However saying that I think you have got good reason to challenge the ticket.
V
As I understand it, you should not cause another vehicle to cross the white line - hence your 'more than one lane' comment. :)
Of course, some vehicles are wider than others.
I personally don't think that challenging it would make a lot of difference, and it might even generate a visit from the Police for Driving without Due Care and Attention or something similar. I've noticed that the parking patrols have started taking photos of cars that are ticketed now - just in case of such an event.
royjames 20-10-2005, 15:48 I was going to challenge the offence having previously won a case in court against a parking ticket at Bramall Lane.
But to be honest I found the whole process to be very time consuming and although I got costs awarded to me it was still not really worth it in the end,I will pay the fine and try to find somewhere else to park the car.
But I think they need to find more space from somewhere to park the car at busy times,at the moment its not good enough.
Internetowl 20-10-2005, 15:50 Roy, park on the road opposite the Herries Road entrance - no restrictions on there and free.

Hi Mate I have done just that, less bloody expensive I think.
Internetowl 20-10-2005, 15:57 do you work at the hospital then?
royjames 20-10-2005, 15:58 No just visiting the place . lol they dont pay enough for me.:D
Internetowl 20-10-2005, 17:27 I was there this morning - didn't see you :)
I think the problem (just one problem amongst millions) with the NGH is that they have built on land which was used for parking. Then they have increased numbers of staff, not medical staff but admin staff. It doesn't take a leap of thought to realise that patients are going to arrive or be brought by car, and as the main hospital for an entire city, visitors are going to have to do the same.
Maybe a solution is to find an area away from the grounds where staff can safely park, supervised at all hours due to the numbers doing nights, and have a shuttle to take them to their vehicles at the end of shifts? And that would include consultants as well as ordinary nurses, cleaners and porters.
Good grief what's the matter with you people? Use the bus, walk or buy a bicycle for goodness sake. Stop whingeing about parking and get some flippin' exercise.
metalman 20-10-2005, 19:53 Except of course that a lot of people going to the hospital might not really be in any fit state to do that...
If they're fit enough to get into a car they're fit enough to get on a bus, don't you think?
Thank god they've finally started dishing out tickets to plonkers who park on the hill and make drivers use the oncoming lane to pass.
Parking there is so dangerous to people who want to get down to the Fir Vale crossroads, especially when you've got Nigel Mansell in his chavved up Nova bombing up the other side trying to overtake everything.
They should either paint double yellows or keep patrolling on there.

No, I don't think so- at least if I'm speaking personally. I'm not up to getting to the bus stop on foot some days, and I'm certainly not up to getting up into the bus, and as for getting to a seat while the bus is moving- well, let's just hope that it's not a child I fall on.
I agree entirely that the ABLE-BODIED members of the population may need to reconsider how they get to the hospital due to the parking problems, but have you looked at the number of sick, disabled or elderly people who need to get to clinics and into wards?
The parking problems affect blue badge holders and sick or elderly people just as much as those who could put on a backpack and hike to the hospital if they so chose.
I'm in and out of the Hallamshire, Weston Park and Northern Gen for scans and clinic appointments virtually every month. These days it's almost impossible to find a safe piece of double yellows to park the car on with the blue badge. I can walk a short way so it's not so bad for me, but it must be awful for those who can't walk at all.
Ok medusa, fair point, I'm more than happy to accept that those with real illness/mobility problems need proper provision - my original gripe was with those who are fortunate enough to be reasonably fit and able bodied who see their cars as an extension of their legs and then have the gall to whine when they break the rules and get caught out.

Totally agree.
Double yellows wouldn't go amiss. Then again, nobody seems to be 'policing' the blatant disregard for parking regulation further down the hill and just the other side of the lights where double yellows and pavements must mean "PLEASE PARK HERE YOU IDLE SODS".
Have seen several close shaves by the hospital just as you describe Lestat. And there always seems to be one car still there at night - 7ish - a white one which is about 100 yards before the entrance. It was there tonight. :loopy:

I'm glad you agree Saxon, It's so annoying trying to get past parked cars on the left and having to squeeze onto the wrong side of the road.
By the way, I know the car you mean - the bosses pet! he/she starts about six in the morning and leaves well after the sunset!
I don't think I've ever drove down that road in the safe knowledge that I wont have to stop behind a bus if it's turning onto Norwood Road because ONE SELFISHLY parked car will be blocking off the inside lane.

The number of parking spaces has been gradually reduced due to the building works. This has then put further pressure on all the other car parks. Many staff at the hospital work irregular hours (myself included) and public transport isn't an option a lot of the time. Admittedly i could make more of a effort at other times but crystal peaks to northern isn't a very easy or direct journey by public transport.
The idea of park and ride is a good one but consultants, have you seen where they park at the minute, genrally round the hospital buildings. I don't think they would know what a bus was if it ran them over :hihi:
I have to admit that I haven't personally had a close shave yet, but always consider the possibility when I pass this line of cars.
I am aware that whenever I pull out into that 'centre' lane - going down the hill - I am laying myself wide open to be head-on with someone coming up the hill, who thinks it would be a good time to nip into the same lane to get past the car who's holding him up....without looking for oncoming traffic first, which he's not expecting.
A cyclist would stand no chance.

Yes, I have noticed that the consultants tend to have parking spaces right up by the doors. In one of the car parks, I think it was near physio, the disabled parking spaces used to be further away from the doors than the consutants' spaces.
But anyone getting irate about people driving - if you're going to hospital it's odds on that you are not in fact fit enough to catch a bus! Visitors to wards might have come from the other side of the city, and not everyone is fortunate enough to live on a bus route which even has any buses after 6pm. And we do have to think about staff working nights, as their safety is also important.
matsalleh 21-10-2005, 23:37 The police do a regular sweep on that stretch of road (easy money and catch).
Also staff who work at Hallamshire, park at NGH and use the free shuttle bus and so it goes onwards and upwards.
ToryCynic 21-10-2005, 23:59 I remember visiting a relative's father there, and I'm sure there was a car park, because I remember being driven out of the car park, and back to the house.
