View Full Version : Squeaky needles?

This might be a daft question but I'll give it a go.

Why do I sometimes get squeaky needles?

My mum says I'm probably holding the needles too tight and making to wool heat up too much?

It goes through me and once it starts it puts me off. Probably why I ended up only managing to finish knitting 1 scarf last year before I got fed up!

Listen to your mum. What you need is to buy lots of yarn and practice regularly! Seriously though, your knitting may get looser as you gain more experience, or you may just be a tight knitter. Personally, I honestly think that your knitting will loosen off with practice. When I was a beginner, my nan used to put talcum powder on my hands and that helped the stitches glide on and off the needles. No good if your knitting with black yarn or asthmatic though!!! Just keep going.

Aaaaaarggghhhh, don't you just hate it...it's like nails on a blackboard to me, and also puts me off my knitting, I agree with the tension idea...sometimes when I'm concentrating too much on a pattern I find my stitches can get tighter and then the inevitable squeak..it just says to me to put the needles down because I'm not in the right frame of mind..cup of tea, skip thro' the pattern..and relaaaaaax...:)
Practice, practice, practice, just rows of K then P, an easy no-brainer that you can rattle off and practice feeling relaxed..:)

P.S A good practice would be 2foot sq blankets for the cats rescue

Thanks guys, at least I know it's not just me then! Yes it's EXACTLY like nails on a blackboard, it's going through me now just thinking about it :gag:

What would you do to make the cat blankets? Knit squares and sew together? What size needles and how many stitches and what wool?

I was also fancying having a go at that snood thing, think I could manage that. Be nice to get something finished before the summer!

Sorry for being a bit thick :loopy::hihi:

I'm not so sure about the cat blanket, you will need to see lilypiglet about that :)
I think that a snood is totally doable, also what you could do apart from practice is get bamboo needles, they are light and I have found that I slacken off my tension when using them :)

The snood is complete! Only got the wool yesterday afernoon, so feeling quite please with myself that I've actually finished something. :D

Chunky wool on massive needles is the way to go I've decided. It grows so quick!

What else can I have a go at next?

Not forgotten about the cat blanket either, happy to have a go at that if someone can let me know what to do?
