Conflict in the "Holy Land".
Speaker: Musheir Al Fara, Sheffield Palestine Solidarity Campaign

The next Sheffield Humanist Society meeting will be 'Conflict in the "Holy Land"' with Musheir Al Fara, Sheffield Palestine Solidarity Campaign

What is the reality of the situation in Israel/Palestine? How did the ongoing ‘troubles’ come about, and to what extent is religion responsible for the conflict affecting the "Holy Land"?

Despite many attempts at peace talks the conflict in Israel/Palestine has been going on for more than half a century. It is a conflict that has affected not just the peoples of the disputed land but their neighbours and the world at large. Do religions just fan the flames or can demands for religious states find a harmonious solution?

The meeting is at 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday 3rd November at the University Arms, 197 Brook Hill, Sheffield, S3 7HG

The University Arms is close to the tram, get off at the Sheffield University stop, and several buses including the 51 & 52, stop almost next to the pub, and the 94 & 95 a short walk away. Parking is available in the streets behind the pub.

You can see a map of the location with this link: http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?q=universityarms+sheffield

Organised by the Sheffield Humanist Society.

I wonder if the (scheduled) execution of Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani in Iran will overshadow the meeting.

"According to news received by the International Committee against Stoning and International Committee against Execution on 1 November 2010, the authorities in Tehran have given the go ahead to Tabriz prison for the execution of Iran stoning case Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani. It has been reported that she is to be executed this Wednesday 3 November." -from an e-mail I received.

On a lighter note, I love this quote from Pat Condell...

"I believe that The Holy Land is the most inappropriate place name in human history, with the possible exception of Sunderland's Stadium Of Light."

Thanks for the information about Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani.

The National Secular Society is organising a last minute protest:
http://www.secularism.org.uk/sakineh-to-be-executed-on-wednes.html
It includes links to send emails to the Iranian regime.

Many local Humanists have signed earlier petitions along with nearly 600,000 others but the Iranian theocracy seems hell-bent on going ahead.

I don't see why it should any more than the a pregnant woman in Nicaragua dying because she was denied medical treatment which could have affected the foetus would 'overshadow' a meeting on Christians being persecuted in Saudi Arabia.
