View Full Version : Mobile phones from newspaper ads - any good?
dwhembro 18-10-2005, 16:28 I need a new mobile and a new contract that doesnt cost me a small fortune each month. The ads in the national press seem to be the cheapest, dialaphone etc etc. But, I dont think I dont think I trust them, I dont know why, I just get a gut reaction to the ads. Whats the catch? Has anyone had any good/bad experiences with them? If you have a contract with one of these companies would you recommend them?
Thanks in advance,
DAve
Some of the better looking contracts are actually 18 months, rather than 12, so just keep an eye out in the small print for that tiny clause!
dwhembro 18-10-2005, 16:38 Yeah, I've seen that. They advertise 6 months free or half price line rental then tie you into a 18 month contract. Swines.
Herbaliser 18-10-2005, 16:47 For some reason I trust dial-a-phone more than other newspaper advertisers. I've got a 12 month contract with them. No problems so far. The catch is that you send back vouchers to take advantage of their deal. As long as you remember, there are no nasty surprises. The company have done eveything I've asked of them and done it efficiently.
darkcharm 18-10-2005, 17:01 i recieved a phone it was on an 18 month contract.when it arrived there was a letter in it which said that some of the months were not actually going to be charged at the month rate of £16.50 has advertised but some of the months was going to be charged at £33.00 a month you do eventually get the phone for £16.50 a month but have to claim cash back for the £33.00 months so in the end i sent it back.they were a bit funny about me wanting to return it but i just could not afford the dearer months so i would watch out before you dive in and open the phone read the letters first.
oasismark 19-10-2005, 07:51 I'd recommend this website.
www.onestopphoneshop.com
I got 2 phones from them 6 months ago, and they do cashback offers.
I'm claiming back a total of £365 over the nexy 6 months from them!!!
Cha-Ching!!
:heyhey:
EDIT:
actually, just checked the site and they do a referal scheme, so mention my name if you purchase ;)
darkcharm 20-10-2005, 07:53 yep cant complain at the £365 back.its just the money you have to lay out in the first place which isnt stated till you recieve the phone.i got the £16.50 one has i knew i could afford that amount but when read letter the dearer months i just couldnt afford so had to return the phone.it was very hard to leave the phone in the box has i wanted to rip it open but thought best not do.i agree that it is great when you get the cash back but not good if you cant lay it out first.anyway hope you enjoy the £365
DaBouncer 20-10-2005, 08:02 Hiya check out www.justphonedeals.co.uk
I got my Nokia 6630 from them and myline rental is only 99p per month.
I get 500 free Xnet minutes and 100 Free texts too.
You can get the same deal as mine above now but the line rental is £0.00 per month (claimed back).
On the 3 network (although they have decent offers on others too).
Give em a whirl :D
I wouldn't trust any of them- id stick with the main 4 and leave it at that! :D
Go to one of the networks directly.
Either by phone or to high street shop.
Talk to each of them in turn, I imagine they all do deals for each particular usage pattern.
The paper ads have to get the phones/network connectivity from somewhere, why pay them to be a middleman for the networks?
(Notice how I am being very good at not mentioning which major network provider I work for!)
youwhatref 20-10-2005, 15:58 Missus used dial-a-phone without any problems. But as already mentioned, phone up one of the providers, tell them what phone you wnat and hwo much you're eilling to pay and i'm sure they'll sort something for you
I was in Vodafone shop in Meadowhall yesterday looking at contract phones, and was told the cheapest contract they do where you get a free phone, is £15 a month with rollover minutes.. I asked is that £15 a month for the whole year or does it go up after 6 months, and they said no it's £15 all the time..
I'm going to take Dad on Saturday and show it to him.. I know at my age I should be able to do what I want, but Mum and Dad tend to control my wallet strings at times otherwise I tend to go on mad spending sprees buying stuff on the net etc.
The next cheapest contract was Orange at £19 a month for 6 months then £25 a month for the rest of the year... That's also with a free phone.
Hope that helps.
