View Full Version : A Nice Light topic OCD
talktofrank 18-10-2005, 12:35 Do any of you guys and girls suffer from mild forms of OCD??
(Obsessive compulsive disorder)
I have quite a few bad traits for example i have to put all the cans in the cupboard straight so the label faces out and they must all be in the right order old to new. When in resterants if they have a logo on the plate it has to be straight facing me.
all my cd's are straight in there cases so when you open it, it looks new like its just bought and they are in alphabet order plus chronological order..
things have to be spaced out equal from each other like stereo and speakers are equal distance apart..
there are many more but i think you get the picture also have a thing about washing hands if i have to open too many doors with all the germs about i need to be carefull you know!!
i think im getting a bit of a hand washing obsession, have washed my hands so much my skin is very dry. i dont think about germs or anything, is just my hands always feel dirty unless i wash them, wow it sounds weird when i say it out loud..
talktofrank 18-10-2005, 12:40 surely some of you have some things that you do that may be considered strange??
may be i need HELP and lots of it!!!
hello nut house is there room for one more!!!
:loopy:
talktofrank 18-10-2005, 12:42 Jenbop it dose not sound so strange at least you have made me feel a little less strange!! so thanks for that. :)
nahh youre not strange i know of loads of people with obsessions...
i think my weirdest one was always having to carry around a drink with me, incase i got thirsty, became obsesed with it, having to leave early to goto shop to buy a drink etc, gonna have to stop it soon though, am drinking far too much fizzy pop!
talktofrank 18-10-2005, 12:55 I have many more things that i am obsessive with but i am glad you dont think i am too strange i was begining to think i was out on a limb there...
nahh not strange at all, better to go out on a limb and share your problems than keep them to yourself, i mean its good to talk about them and stuff, well it always makes me feel better anyway, good to realise your not alone our strange habbits!
talktofrank 18-10-2005, 13:04 yep it is good to get it out there but not many others have strange obsessions so it makes us the cool minoraty but its good to know i am not alone in my OCD type thing!! :)
Hee hee, I guess I have 'borderline' OCD when it comes to washing my hands, wash them constantly ... and when when i've been to the loo in bars/restaurants etc, I wash my hands and then have to try and open the door without touching the handle because then i'd have to wash my hands again ...
I hate eating out because I'm really fussy about the cleanliness of the tables, cutlery, plates etc. Oooh i'm a bit of a tidy freak too, and can't stand empty/used glasses, plates etc left on the table once they are finished with so, I am often seen clearing the table in bars etc... lol
I used to be really, really obsessive about cleanliness and hygeine but these days I am so much more chilled out and since I became ill, I just can't do what I want regarding housework, so, I only wash my kitchen floor about 3 times a day now .... :(
I have all my cd's in alphabetical order - but that's normal isn't it?
talktofrank 18-10-2005, 13:28 Well i also have the tidy bug too everything in its place and a place for everything and i know what you mean about empty glasses left on tables i do the same as you tidy them up take them back to the bar then go and wash my hands of course!!
3 times a day for the kitchen floor good on ya i cant function properly if its not clean and tidy around me my desk at work is a work of pure an6lness so tidy the cleaners probably wonder whats going on...
and with the cd thing i know people who dont even put the right cd in the right case wel i know i could not sleep if that was in my house and now i say it out loud i am soooooooo strange not good.. well if you need help with the house work all ways happy to help out a fellow obsessive!!! :D
RodimusPrime 18-10-2005, 13:28 I don't step on the cracks on the pavement.
I also have a thing where, when listening to music, I count the syllables of the song out on my fingers. You start on the thumb, then count one syllable per finger across to the little finger, then back over to the thumb, and so on until you get to the end of the song (or just the chorus or whatever if you haven't got time). If you end up on the thumb, this is 'good'. It's like you've won the game. If you end up on the little finger, that's pretty good too, but not as good as the thumb. You can also do it with things people say to you. I've been doing this since I was nine, if not earlier (I remember doing it with the Lord's Prayer at First School).
I also have a mild form of synaesthesia. This is where you associate certain concepts with sensory impressions, such as colours or tastes. With me it's colours, and it only works with a few things, such as the days of the week:
Monday: sandy-coloured
Tuesday: reddish-pink
Wednesday: green
Thursday: orange
Friday: red
Saturday: white
Sunday: brown
Some people get this really strongly. Apparently there was a thing on telly about it recently but I missed it. I believe there was a woman on there who couldn't stand talking to her friend Derek because every time she thought of his name she could strongly taste earwax.
talktofrank 18-10-2005, 13:34 I cant walk over three man hole covers if they are together.. and you are right there was a program about it think it was on channel 4 but i also missed it but people told me about it but only to take the mick but i dont care i am who i am...
like the thing with the syllable its just strangly cool
Hubby's got the tidy thing, his truck gets swept out and dusted 3 or 4 times a day, but the shrink thinks it's more to do with his Aspergers than OCD. The Aspergers means everything in his world is black or white, on or off, right or wrong, there's no almosts, or possiblys. Everything's either done his way or done wrong. It's like he's a binary person over everything. He can't cope with uncertaintly over anything, and when out in his truck can tell you (in order) the contents of every cubby hole and box, and if he reaches for something that 'should' be somewhere and it's not there, he will pull the truck to the side of the road until it's sorted out.
talktofrank 18-10-2005, 13:41 wow i feel much more normal.. you are all fab its cool to hear about every one elses little strange things it makes me feel warm inside to know i am not a nut ball waiting to go to the nut house!!
Plain Talker 18-10-2005, 14:03 When i peg the washing out, the pegs for each garment have to match, exactly, in colour and style.
Oh, yes... and t-shirts need to be hung with t-shirts, skirts with skirts etc.
PT
I like even numbers- so ill touch stuff twice or turn the radio so its on an even number?
ooh i just remembered another weird thing i have. i have to use coloured paper clips, and can only use one colour a day for everything, it takes me ages to sort through a box of paper clips to match the colours up.
how strange theres loads of things that just seem normal to me, everyday life, but other people might think im a little crazy.
although i think the paper clips obsession came from my intense boredom at work, and having nothing to do, 8 hours can seem like a very long time when you dont like your job!
talktofrank 18-10-2005, 14:14 with numbers with me its times of day like 13:13 14:14 you get the idea but i just like it to be balanced...
and the pegs thing know what you mean i do the same!
its all good!!!!
Am I the only one who has to check every light switch, plug socket, window, tap and gas ring, twice before I leave the house...and then try the door handle 6 times after locking it...and then go back to it??!!!
talktofrank 18-10-2005, 15:37 I think you are not alone there i check everything then sometimes find my self going back and checking again so no your deffinetly not alone....
FairyNormal 18-10-2005, 16:01 My 8 year old son has mild OCD.
He has checking behaviours - doors, pockets, bags etc.
He 'has' to do things to 'earn more points'. If he doesn't do his often very wierd 'things' he loses 'points'. If he loses all his 'points' something bad will happen.
The obsession is the 'points' and the compulsion is his little rituals.
He is becoming pretty obsessed with germs and washing his hands so am having to keep an eye on that incase it becomes a problem.
Living with a child with OCD is very traumatic and hard.
My sister has to have the same fork for every meal. It is distinguishable as it has a deer on the handle. God forbid if we are feeling petty and use it ourselves.
She began this trait as a 10 yr old and 15 yrs later it's still going. She takes it out with her if eating out. Classy eh? Can you imagine explaining that on your first date?
Oooh know what you mean about the peg thing.
I have certain colour pegs for certain clothes and if I can't find the right peg, then the item of clothing has to wait until other stuff is dry so that I can hang it out.
I have a bit of thing about the dishwasher too and when hubby puts anything in it I always have to go and check that he's put it in the right place (which really irritates him as I often take everything out and re-stack it) :heyhey: Also all the mugs on the mug tree have to face a certain way, why on earth would anyone hang them all higgledy piggledy??? that is soooo frustrating.
I have a bit of a thing about where I sit if (on the rare occassions) we eat out. I have been known to change tables 4 times .... :P
i used to have mild OCD. theres some stuff i posted about it on the mental health day thread so i wont bore you by telling it again. ive just rememberd something though that i left out of my post on the other thread. last year i had this thing where everytime i chucked something or even touched the bin in the kitchen i would have to wash my hands because they felt so dirty and unclean.
i used to do this quite a lot and becuase i didnt like hot water i washed with cold water in winter. my hands started bleeding after a few months of doing this and i had to put vaseline on evry night to stop my skin from cracking.
but i stopped doing that quite a while ago!!

A good friend of mine has Aspergers syndrome. I'd known her for a few years before she told me and I just thought she was quirky and a bit eccentric. I've never really viewed her as having a disability though. She's great fun and she's just about the only person I know who's ALWAYS got something interesting to say.
Over the summer I lived with another aspergers guy for a few months. The thing that struck me most was the difference between him and my long-time female asperger friend. She is quite an extrovert (I met her during my happy hardcore raving days a few years back). When I told the guy this however, he was gobsmacked. He is quite shy, dislikes social situations and has problems with strong colours, so couldn't imagine that an asperger sufferer could go to a full-on sensory experience like a rave.

katy1981 21-10-2005, 10:39 i dont suffer any form of this myself but my sister did suffer quiet severly for some years it was awful she had to and i mnean had to take every appliance in the kitchen outside and wash them insie and out with bleach and clean behind them all with bleach then shed start on the other rooms she would do this every single day and it went on for 3 years she didnt have time to pick her children up from school or do the shopping or anything really so i had to move in and become her carer but i was such a young age at 15 that it started to take its toll and i think it must have started rubbing off on me cos i was doing the same things at the same time everyday maybe thats just routine or the fact that everything i did had to fit around her ocd habits could you say that i myself had some mild ocd oh i dont know all i know is that ocd is really bad and that sometimes what ppl think is ocd its actually habit but when does it stop becomeing a habit and starts being an obbession( btw i can only spell that cos i use the perfume lol!!!!!)
