View Full Version : The Broadfield pub - is it losing its good name ...
Carborundum 18-10-2005, 04:30 Went there last night for one drink ...
Could not get a drink as they have ripped out the bell at the bar which alerts the staff to customers requiring service in the other room in the bar ... waited 15 mins then left ....
Also those new big flat panel TVs showing obscure crap sports like kick boxing ,,, everyone watching those almost no conversation ... is the character of this bohemian pub being destroyed ....
and not a student in sight - admittedly it was monday ...
jojojoanna1 18-10-2005, 07:06 well i hope not im going there on thursday to do the quiz . and we have never been to the quiz b 4
muddycoffee 18-10-2005, 07:25 I have not been in for a while because the Woman who took it over, who is known to me, told me that there would be no more bands on or anything like that.
Another nail in the coffin for the sheffield music scene I thought.
I am in touch with the family of Mr Twigg the Bloke that originally built it and they would be sad to hear this I haven't told them. Although I take photos of it and e-mail them every time they change the front or paint it a different colour.
Havent been in for years - but the pool room was hardly known for its "good name"...
carcrash 18-10-2005, 08:51 A lot of my mates still drink in there, Scott, Georgie trev, Gerry, Andy but I go in about once a month. It did used to be my local.
I cannot get my head around why the idiot that used to run it decided to move the music from one side ( pool room) to the other. The pool room was a great venue in it's time.
I usually go in for the quiz on a Thursday and sometimes at the weekend for a pint or 2 before going somewhere else.
It's an ok pub but I remember it being much better before they got rid of the 'old pub' look a few years ago.
There's an open mic night on a Sunday where some people turn up and do some songs, seems to be popular but I rarely go in on a Sunday.
antisocial 18-10-2005, 10:08 We go to the broady fairly regularly....not saying how regularly to protect my good name.
As well as having the advantage of being 2 mins from my house, I have no problems with the place. Its no worse than any numbers of other pubs and a lot better that a fair few.
The Sunday nights are fun, especially if you are not afraid to loosen up and join the sing along (though if you are one of the people who go to it and then sit talking really loudly over the music can you and your friends just STOP!)
Rather be there than an over priced, over crowded, bar in town.
It's a shame the Broady has been spoilt by having TV's installed everywhere. The last time I was in there they were showing Emmerdale with the sound off!!!
antisocial 18-10-2005, 10:35 Unless there is a football match the sound tends to be off. Unfortunately for every one person that doesn't want tv screens, loud music, quiz machines etc there are going to be many more that do.
Was in the Broady on Friday night and the atmosphere was great, busy but not too busy, no problems getting served etc. Often pop in in the afternoon for a coffee with a friend and its quiet and great for a chat. Plus food for under £3.
If people have a problem with the screens the easiest thing to do is not to look at them.

Not as easy as it sounds, you eye gets drawn to TV screens, and I find them incredibly intrusive in pubs. It makes the atmosphere much less relaxing,
RodimusPrime 18-10-2005, 11:48 I live near the Broady but had never been in before the renovation. It sounds like a mistake though. Now it's a very ordinary pub on one side, and just horrible on the other (pool room).
The open mic on Sunday nights is run by Tim and Justin out of Bison. They're doing a great job and I've had some great nights in there.
Now Sheffield's music scene is looking healthy, it would be a great opportunity for the Broady to start putting bands on again. Surely it would make financial sense, as the place is never exactly rammed during the week?
RodimusPrime 18-10-2005, 11:49 btw this probably deserves its own thread, but TV screens in pubs with the sound down is perhaps the most annoying thing in the world ever.
I agree, it's difficult not to get drawn to TV's, especially when there's more than one within eyesight. I go to the pub to get away from the bloody thing!
I was in the Broady one quiet Sunday afternoon and American wrestling was on. I asked the 4 people sat in the same bit of the pub as me if they minded if I turned it off, everyone said "Please do!", 2 minutes later the landlady comes over and puts it on again!
carcrash 18-10-2005, 12:02 I did that a few weeks ago. The had MTV on and the jukebox at the same time
antisocial 18-10-2005, 12:12 Just want to make my point clear as we now have a new thread......personally not bothered either way if TVs are there are not.....if I want to watch tv I do it at home, if they are on in a pub (especially with the sound off) its simple enough to ignore them and concentrate on the people I'm with.
My point was there are a lot of places that are far worse, to condemn a pub for silent TV screens (anywhere with a dress code, not enough chairs, overly bright lights, music so loud you can't hear the person next to you etc etc etc).
Ok it was a music venue, now its not, things change. Its sad but it happens. New people have new styles, different approaches etc. Sorry its a case of if you don't like it go somewhere else.

I'm Sorry I disagree.
I find them extremely distracting and difficult to ignore.
I also hate going around to someone's house when they have the television on in the background. I find it the height of bad manners and I have great difficulty concentrating if that is the case in their house.
Times I'vebeen on a Sunday it seemed a "closed mic" night rather than an open one
Not one offer for anybody to get up an play....just the guys who run it singing some covers and the odd one of their mates getting up.
Don't most people call the pool side the zoo?
Ive not been in the broadie for ages though, so cant comment.

Sorry if you got that impression. I'll pass on your comments. I think the idea is that if you want to play you need to go up them and say so. They could perhaps make this more clear though.
It's certainly not usually the case that everyone - or even most people - who play are their mates though. They will always give precedence to people who haven't played before, and recent nights have seen loads of different people getting involved. The exception to this is the odd quiet night when there has been a lack of people wanting to play, so they've had to rely on mates to fill up the time.
As I said though, will definitely pass on your comments.
antisocial 18-10-2005, 21:15 Just to add, have just come from the Broady and was chatting to the new manager. Told him about what has been mentioned here and he was keen for me to say that he is looking to start having bands back at the Broady and if there are any bands out there interested, then get in touch with him.
Also having been to a number of Sunday nights, if no one volunteers, what are they meant to do???? Its a music night. the time has to be filled.

I had no idea that there was a new manager, the last one wasn't there for long, right I'll start going in again, and that is wonderful news that they might have bands on again..

When Ive been there's never been anything along the line of "If anyone wants to get up and have a go just come forward"
It can be a little daunting if the same people are just doing songs and no invite is made for anybody else to get up. That's what they are supposed to do.

Yes I agree TV or Plasma screens in pubs does deserve its own thread - only thing I will say on this is sadly a lot of pubs feel compelled to install them to compete with out new all visual all media world - and the home TVs !
But steering the thread back to the subject of the Broadie ....
Its not that I have anything against the Broadie - I used to go a bit and I also live 2 mins walk from it - so a potential "local" for me - though vying with the Byron - and I also want to see the Broadie thrive and survive and regain its former atmosphere - yes any pub deserves a good spruce up now and them and I will complement them on the great new clean exterior look of the pub, the new furnishings and the area at back of left room with old fireplace and laminate - but if you do have any influence with the current landlord please also make the following points to him:
1) Why did they do away with the service bell and what is replacing it ? There obviously needs to be something because of the layout of the bar and 2 rooms - I thought it was discrete video camera instead but seemingly not as I waited a full 15 mins and no-one noticed ... is there now a megaphone to be provided on the bar top ?
2) Probably related to point 1) - the younger staff working there while not over-active and attentive or "loquatious" should be a bit more friendly and chatty - not come across as "surly" as some of them do ... admittedly it was monday night tho ..
3) Music - jukeboxes - it seems good and a good choice and I like to put on a few tunes in a pub (especially in the Sportsman !) - but the presence of big plasma screens with the sound on seems to intimidate me against doing it as people are gaga looking at the screens - but the jukebox is an integral part of the Broadies inimitable atmosphere ...
4) Music - live - yes I remember some really good bands from a few years back - one band in particular called Merano - which I think are named after a type of cherry ? - tho not going long enough to remember bands playing in the pool room - and yes some bands were really good - adding to the Broadies unique music pub atmosphere and giving budding bands more exposure and a break - by all means bring it back live music say on one regular night a week ...
SO in summary I willl be back when its more busy to check out the improvements ...
johntwotone 19-10-2005, 21:19 i think its a great pub.... i really don't know what you lots are talking about :)
GabbleRatcht 19-10-2005, 21:46 As for the telies

:D
Hey I work at the broadfield and there is a new landlady there called ruth she is nice and would probably appreciate any feedback good or bad about the pub.
ill let her know the general suggestion is more live music.
and you can all say how lovely the bar staff are too!
Can anyone remember when the broady used to give you your round for free if the barrel ran out on you? that was cooooool!
neeeeeeeeeek 16-01-2006, 11:11 I still go in but wish they would turn the bloody TV's off, no one is watching them but they are a horrible distraction. I don't see why they need so many TV's in both bars, The Zoo side should have the TV's on and the other side should be left with the jukebox. If people wan't to watch TV then they can go in the side with the pool tables. Still got the best Keebab shop in the world over the road which is a bonus.
Mrs_Bacala 16-01-2006, 13:09 We went into The Broadfield on New Years Eve - in general it was a good night, though think they could get done for false advertising.... There was a sign outside saying they were going to have cocktails, then when we got there early evening they firstly couldn't find a menu, then when they did they didn't have half the ingredients! Couldn't even do a White Russian in the end. Bit dissappointing for a cocktail fan such as myself!

I tell you what I know the eclectic mix of lecturers and alchies adds to the bohemian atmosphere blah blah blah but that right hand sides a disgrace! thank gawd the whole pubs not like that anymore...
Having said that there was this lad sat opposite us on the left hand side, on a round trip to gurnsey, almost dribbling, telling us to 'cheer up it may never happen' cos we weren't as sideways as him! t w a t.
Drunks on speed in the pub, such a lovely combination :loopy:

Totally.
Do you think these places are just showing off their huge plasma/projection screens, like some kind of entertainments dick-extension, or are forced to keep them on by the brewery, or is it just a case of the 'lets-see-how-much-energy-we-can-waste-at-once' syndrome of todays society? Or just retardedness?
What's the point in having a huge, badly-tuned in and focussed TV showing a silent Football Focus, or better yet up-to-the-minute commentary on Bulgarian elephant polo. Images...images...images:: arrgghhh! Stop I feel like I'm in THX 1138. Turn it off!!
Actually the best thing to do in these situations is to throw a chair at the plasma, or set fire to the white screen. But there is always this option...turn off any TV:

Word.
I've just realised that I hadn't read to the end...due to a massive TV rage. How embarrassing.
I used to play for the broadfield football team.
The pub is great.
