View Full Version : Scooter clubs in the 50's
Sorry if this has been covered before, but I did look to see. In the late 50's and early 60's, scooter clubs were very prolific. As memory serves, there were the Sheffield Scooter Club, which met at the George on Langsett Rd. this one I belonged to, also there were Vespa and Lambretta clubs, and probably others.
There was one major meeting, probably in 1959, where all clubs got together and had a jamboree kind of thing. I remember riding through town along with probably 100 or so others in convoy, with the bobbies stopping traffic at all the major intersections to let the parade go by. Good days.

There are still clubs round Sheffield, Yorkshire and the rest of the UK, it would be good to hear from anyone who has been in any of the clubs over the years.

little malc 20-10-2005, 18:25 Can,t say I was ever a scooter lad, but as I had an Ariel Leader in 61 I supose it was pretty close, I joined the Ariel owners club and had many great outings, like the scooter clubs at the time, the great thing was the cameraderie.

hi Lambo, thanks 4 those.
Ii joined the Sheffield Lambretta club in 1958 with a LD model we met at the Travelers pub on the Moor it included Rotherham members who if I remember rightly moved to form their own club, we then met at the Big Tree Woodseats by then I had a150 LI model, I have a 150 LI now i restored it some years ago but only cover around 300 miles yearly when on the club runs we did almost that in a day. Ii left the club in 1963 and bought a car still see a few of the members. My only claim to fame was winning the rough ride at Hunstanton [Norfolk] in 1959 still have a small silver cup this was organised by the Kings Lynn Scooter club happy days.

Wide Boys Lambretta ClubI was a member of the Sheffield Lambretta club 1957 to 1963 still in touch with some members, today i have sold my LI 150 PURCHASED AND RESTORED 15 YEARS AGO AFTER A BREAK OF 30 YEARS, lots of good times remembered 2 of the club members in the picture are dead oh dear getting old.
joined the cutlers scooter club early sixtys. had lambo tv`75/ met at big tree each week had great trips away in all weathers.would not feel safe on 2 wheels in todays traffic
I occasionally rode with The Sheffield Scooter Club from The Big Tree, in the early 60's. I was serving in the RAF at the time so was not always available. I started off with a LD150 which I bought from the dealer by the bus station down Snig Hill but graduated to a TV175 when they were introduced. A far superior machine. Sad to say, I always fancied more power so I moved on to a Norton Dominator. Marriage then got me off two wheels and into cars although I did have a brief trip down memory lane with a Honda for a couple of years in 79/80.

Might this be the National Vespa Rally in Leeds in 1959? The Yorkshire Film Archive has a film of this that will be going free online in 2020.

No, this was called the "Three Clubs " rally or similar. We were able to purchase a pennant with the three of clubs featured on it. I made a mistake in my original entry, the club I belonged to was called the Vulcans Scooter Club.
I believe the participating clubs were the Vulcan, the Sheffield Lambretta and Vespa clubs.
