Apparently children today are so obsessed with their mobiles, particularly texts that they are developing some sort of psychological disorder. A figure of £1 billion per year is spent on texting by under 18's who seem to measure their popularity by how many text messages they receive. They are says the article unable to concentrate for any great length of time without constantly checking their phone and self esteem drops when the texts get fewer.

What are we doing to our children? We may give them mobiles for safety but are we piling up problems for the future.

:(

It is another outlet - kids have always had a short attention span and self esteem will rise and fall regardless of technological gadgetry.

Everything is bad for us.

The world has gone text message crazy. Children texting other children who are in the same classroom. Whatever next.

I think children with mobiles are just wrong.

I also think that text messaging is blunting peoples social skills.

I was really against the idea of giving my child a mobile phone until I discovered the benefits.

I can get in touch with them when ever or wherever they are. I have their friends numbers in my phone too. DS works for his credit and its limited so we only really have it as an alternative to me standing on the end of the street doing my fishwife routine shouting him in for his tea :hihi:

Id be tempted to give my kids a mobile phone when theyre old enough but doesnt it make them a target for thieves?
My neices have them and theyre great for allowing their parents to keep in touch.

Nah, my son has a really nasty phone that nobody would want, hes more likely to get a kicking for being so unfashionable  but as he is a rebel rock monkey he doesnt give two hoots :P

You know that phones 4 U ad.
The one where the taxi driver yells YEAH YEAH YEAH?

Thats your boyfriend that is.

Thankfully i have a few years yet to worry about giving my little girl a phone so i might keep my old one thats already out of fashion and give it to her. In five years time or whenever itll be an antique so no one in their right minds is gonna want it.
Good idea that.

Kids are permantly checking their phones for text messages?

They're not the only ones, I probably check my phone once every five minutes at least. I can make do with no calling credit but feel completely lost if I've no text messages left.

I do agree they are ruining the art of conversation though.

PM me if you want to discuss further, I get paranoid discussing things in large groups.........

Just think what it would be like if we could rewrite some classic stories with mobile phones...Cathy & Heathcliffe in Wuthering Heights...Romeo & Juliet...Troilus & Cressida...Anthony & Cleopatra...Heloise & Abelard

Anyone like to try?

- kids have always had a short attention span

I think you mean "those children of low intelligence have always had a short attention span". It can't be any coincidence that it is the thicker children who make most use of these gadgets, probably because they can't manage to entertain themselves for more than 2 minutes.
