View Full Version : Speed Awareness Course
Has anyone been on it?
What have I got to look forward to?
How can South Yorkshire Police say they are trying to revert from punishing (3 pts & fine) to educating (£71 course)
Why is it £10 cheaper to do it in the Midlands & £10 more to do the course in Wales!?!
They both sound like equal punishments to me.
I'll make sure I won't get caught next time :hihi:
It is good. Honestly. It will be the best extra tenner you ever spent.
(And the worst 70 quid... slow down next time).
CHEZZFAYE 13-10-2010, 22:59 i no some 1 who did it through a4e and 1 of the pics they used is of a lad n his dad that we know. took the mik outa him for months coz he looked like a right bell in the pic
Not quite sure whether the last post needs translation.
It's worth the money because there are no points, and hence no rise in your insurance.
I did it last year.
It was really worthwhile and only took a few hours on a wet Saturday morning. My mpg has also gone up since - probably covered the cost of the course.

I'm sorry as you obviously found it worthwhile but in what way? Its an absolute load of rubbish and waste of time I would take the 3 points if I were you ! Its just another money making scam from some company who has thought oh I'll offer this course and make loads of dosh!! The course tutor was a patronising up his own arse idiot who had done everything in his time and I mean everything and anything that could possibly happen to anyone in a car or on a motorbike  All the people on the course were just your everyday drivers who had gone a bit over the limit and got caught. There weren't any of the boy racer types there who drive at 70 mph everywhere, I wonder why :hihi:
staninoodle 14-10-2010, 08:04 You sit in a room with other speeders, write name tags and then introduce yourself, name and job,to the others,i was with about 25 others, just off norfolk park one friday evening.
The tutor uses various frames to show an array of speed scenarios, you split into groups and answer set speed questions.
All in all its a reinforcement of the highway code bits you must have forgot in the speed section, and its better than 3 points

Across the country different police forces have entered into a contract (after a tender process) with a speed awareness course provider. They offer slightly different courses with different cost profiles, clearly, hence the difference in cost. Not so long ago Derbyshire offered a theory AND practical on-road speed awareness course at a great deal (£90?) more than the £71 you quote 'co's that was what asked for in the tender document by Derbys. Constabulary. More recently they had to compete with the neighbouring South Yorks. and Notts. theory-only courses so Derbys. became theory-only as well.
All police forces (pretty much) bought into the logic that nicking drivers was not working, so from 1988 training courses were piloted and set up to educate (the three elements of road safety are enforcement, engineering and education).

The course is targetted at those who were caught fractionally over the speed limit. The reason you do not see 'boy racers' and excessive speeders is because they are usually dealt with by the courts.
sensiblelass 14-10-2010, 17:06 I have also recently been on a speed awareness course. I was not surprised that it was mainly dominated by women on the course i attended.
My thoughts were that boy racers would rather collect the points than sit on a very interesting course and be shown up! It does make you realise how easily the fines can be avoided! However I also know how easy it is too loose concentration very quickly on the roads and become unaware of your speed. As for the fine for the course it is rather steep but if it saves points on your licence in return that your car insurance can go up by 25% with some companies.

That's possible, but the course is only offered if you were caught at not very far above the speed limit; a "boy racer" doing 50mph through a 30 limit wouldn't be given the option.
I got caught because my own car was in for repairs and I forgot that I didn't have cruise control. I was picked up at 36 in a 30 zone.

Disgraceful:D
I was invited to my course for doing 48 in a 40 zone. I'd slowed down for the camera too:blush: I just forgot that the limit was 40, not 50.
The course did me a lot of good though. My fuel consumption is much better and I do drive more slowly... in most places. :)
It is a good course.
I was expecting an afternoon of being told off by stern faced coppers.
It is a powerpoint presentation, given by senior driving examiners.
The best advice they gave is not to get wound up by people pressuring you.
The speed limit, is a limit, not a target etc.
It is a fact that you enjoy your driving more if you are not pushing yourself to the extreme all the time.

It is only what you would get fined anyway, and you dont get the points.
Further, you get a good bit of education as well.
I have had my licence clean for 35 years, I was willing and able to take a bollocking to preserve that.
it was a good reminder to me.

It costs an extra £10, but - to most people, I imagine - that's trivial compared to keeping a clean licence.

Couldn't agree more with this - I learnt one thing I didn't know and was "reminded" of quite a few things I had "forgotten" since I took my test
investigator 15-10-2010, 08:38 Interesting comments - thanks. I'm doing the course on the 29th for 35 in a 30 :shakes:
matsalleh 15-10-2010, 09:13 Yes it is a good course as long as you are caught locally, as you have to take the course where you are caught. Also make sure you are on time.
sally_sheff 15-10-2010, 16:17 i have to attend one at the end of this month. Had a clean driving licence for over 20 years so grateful not to get the points!
