i went to skool at 12:30pm yesterday and the power was cut, and we were told it will take 4-5hrs to get power back. then this morning at 10am, they still have no power!! its great that skool's cancelled! but it also means we have to do alot more work to make up for these 2 days! i hope we will get power back tomorrow! i been doing nothing but watch tv lately, i need to get back in the working mood again!!
yesterday, i heard it was that part of sheffield without power, including the interchange and train station! does anybody know if they have power back yet? i tried looking for stuff about it at the star's website, but found nothing! how will i know if they get power back tomorrow, to save me from going there from jordanthorpe? shall i just call the uni and ask if they have power back?
No, it's still off. I was gutted, dragged myself out of bed this morning, still half asleep, walked all the way in, only to find the uni's still closed and lectures cancelled so I had to walk back home again.
Yes, I heard the word going round amongst Hallam lecturers on the 08:19 train from Dore to Sheffield this morning! Contractor cut through mains power supply or something.
the website and firstclass are back up now
don't know if the actual uni will be opening this evening tho

We had really big storms here last night and one of the lads who is allways late for work used the excuse "we lost power in the night, etc.
I told him "I've had no power at home for ten years"
"why?" he asked looking rather puzzled.
I said "Because I got married,"
Here's the email that was distributed about the power failure for anyone who's interested:-
Important Information For All Students
The closure of the buildings at City Campus on Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday morning this week was due to an interruption to the University’s power supply from YE.
The power supply was interrupted on Tuesday lunchtime and restored on Tuesday evening just after 6.00pm. Unfortunately, the supply then failed again at 7.45am on Wednesday morning as full power was being restored and all computing services brought up to full power. For this reason the University could not convey messages about Wednesday’s closure until Wednesday morning and we apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused.
Following the closure of many of the buildings at City Campus on the 27/28 January, YE located a major fault on their equipment which caused the interruption and this has now been repaired. They have assured us that the service should now be stable.
On behalf of the University I can confirm that all campuses and buildings are open as usual on Thursday 29 January. IT services have either been, or are in the process of being, restored across all campuses and all classes and events should now take place as scheduled. The University will make every effort to re-arrange classes and events which have been cancelled.
Throughout the incident the University has used local media announcements to update staff and students on the situation in accordance with University procedures.
We would like to thank you for your patience during the last two days.

 The user in question volunteered to change her name and was more than happy to. Unless it's relevant to the power cuts, don't post it.
