vets arnt cheap. I would just go with your local one. is it part of a veterinary group. my local one is part of the goddard group
fridgeman 17-10-2005, 09:27 find an old aged pensioner ask them to take your pet to the pdsa, your pet will be injected for a small fee nowhere near £46
in fact i feel sure you can use these people youself if youre out of work.
fruit&nut 17-10-2005, 10:24 i no vets arnt cheap, but i think thats expensive, the local vets are just a one off not in a group,
i dont no any pensioners,lol,
diamond 5 17-10-2005, 10:31 try crookes and partners they are cheap thats where we go:thumbsup:
louise170419 17-10-2005, 10:32 there is a excellent vets in chesterfield and very cheap as well, they are called spires vets. if you have a car pm me and il give you directions. ive used this vet for 14 years now and he is the most honest and reliable vet going. hope this helps louise
PerlOfWisdom 17-10-2005, 11:23 Good
Cheap
Immediately available
Pick any 2
can recommend spires, good vet with good prices - however allow 60 - 90 minutes to be seen.
pdsa can see to your pets if you are receiving benefits.
they also accept donations if any kindhearted souls would like to contribute.
RunningFree 17-10-2005, 11:39 You get a pet, you pay the price. Price shouldn't mean anything when it comes to your pets!
Yellowrose 17-10-2005, 11:49 PDSA attend to sick pets if youre on Housing Benefit, but they still charge for vaccinations, regardless of your status. They didnt used to do vaccinations, but now they do, I know this because they sent me a letter advertising this. However, they may still be cheaper than the average vet.
Why not ring around? I used to use one in Chesterfield as they were much cheaper and you always got seen if you just turned up. This may not be the case anymore as it is years since I used them. They were on St Johns Rd Newbold ... Not very convenient for the majority of Sheffielders I know!
Saying you get a pet you pay the price is irrelevant to many people. Anyone can fall on hard times, and may have acquired their pet when times were better. Julie should be commended for the fact she wants to do the responsible thing and get her cat vaccinated.
Julie, I hope you get things sorted. Think about getting him or her neutered too ... you may be able to get this done at low cost or free through certain agencies ... I think from time to time RSPCA or PDSA advertises this service. Can anyone add to this?

Yeah but why pay more than necessary
I think she's doing a sensible thing finding somewhere a little cheaper - though don't forget, it's the care that matters most so if you do find somewhere that's cheaper but you're not totally happy with the way they treat your kitten then go elsewhere.
Animals can be costly so save as much money as you can :P
sorry forgot to say - I go to Hallam Vets on Holme Lane.
They're not terribly cheap but cheaper than that - I think my dog's injections were around 30 pounds. And the care is really good.

but i bet you won't mind shopping around for cheaper tyres or exhausts when you buy a car.

they do , they also advertised cheap neutering in the Star (RSPCA) however i had my cocker spaniel done cheaper @ a vet in eckington.
fruit&nut 17-10-2005, 12:40 thanks willman i am ringing that vets in eckington later
Julie23.
I've just had both my kittens vaccinated. It cost £34 each. This was at Beech House vets in High Green. The £34 is for both of the injections, you pay them when they've had their first injection, then go back in a couple of weeks for the second and you dont pay then.
I'd highly reccommend Beech House. They are great with the animals and very reasonably priced.
Zip.
RunningFree 17-10-2005, 14:00 Our lass works in vets (abbeymoor/halifax rd). She says highfield on london road are the cheapest but they also have the worst reputation od all vets in sheffield.
julie,
the 6 months thing sounds right. it's too dangerous to get them done any earlier.
Good luck with getting them done. I'd highly recommend Hallam Vets on Holme Lane, we take both our cats and our dog there and they're always really good with them. They know their stuff and aren't patronising and are very gentle.
When I recently took my puppy for a microchip the vet nearly cried because she cried so much when he put it in.
My mum took our cats to Abbeymoor because they were a bit cheaper but said she wasn't as happy with their service so took them back to our usual vets.
Other things to look at are their opening times, whether they do out of hours service etc.
Hallam vets are open every day of the week but only for a couple of hours on a Sunday but when they're not open, you can ring up any time if your animal gets sick and either take them in or they'll come for them with the 'animal ambulance' :D
fruit&nut 17-10-2005, 20:14 i have phoned croft vets at eckington they charge £30 for her two injections and when shes 6 months old i can get her neuted for £30,
they also did a package deal for £60 inc, injections, microchip, and £10 off when she gets neuted,(i think she also said something else,i forgot)
well it just goes to show shop around and you can find better,
thankyou to everyone for your help
You may well find that the £46 quoted was for 3 jabs, not 2.
Many vets now cover against Feline Leukaemia Virus too (as well as flu, which is actually a to part vaccine, and infectious enteritis), and if it was also covered, then you were actually offered quite a good deal.
Can also recommend Hallam on Holme Lane. All 4 cats go there- I may meet you in there one day Lottie!
fruit&nut 18-10-2005, 13:09 hi i phoned the vets that quoted me £46 and they said it was for 2 injections not 3,
1 to be done now and 1 in 2 weeks time,
just thought id let you know
Fair enough- that sounds fairly pricey then (but just paid £32 for booster including Feline Leukaemia Virus this morning, so I think I'm immune to the cost these days!)
fruit&nut 19-10-2005, 20:05 just been to take my kitten for her jabs, went to crofts at eckington, bit of a treck but worth it,they were fantastic great with my kitten, lovely vet, clean ill be going back again in 3 weeks for the rest of her jabs,
if anyone wants there number,or directions pm me

Hmm. Our cat doesn't know it, but if the vet's bill exceeds supply, she gets a cheap injection and eternal bliss.

Thats not very nice is it!
Maybe you should stop taking too many drugs and pay for some pet insurance to avoid this happening.

How many drugs do I take and how much does this cost me exactly? You seem to have inside knowledge. Or maybe you should comment about things you actually know instead of erroneously presuming stuff you have no idea about.
Say my vets bill for my cat is £15,000 (microsurgery in her brain to remove a tumour on her hypothalamus) am I going to pay it? No. She will be put down.
She's a cat.
At the moment she's perfectly healthy mind.
Would you pay £5000 to have your pet hamster cured?

the section about drugs was meant as a joke as alot of your posts are about drugs. You may have interpreted what i was saying wrong.
And with regards a pet hamster cured I wouldn't pay 5000 pounds because I would have pet insurance which would cover it for me. Every one of my pets are covered with pet insurance apart form a snake shich i have just got. I pay over 30 pounds a month to cover me in case any accident happens and will save me form paying a massive amount which i dont actuall have. :D
it should be law that if you have a pet, it should be insured!

You see the thing is I strenously avoid spending money on drugs, as the most interesting ones grow on trees.

Hamster Insurance (from a couple of selected insurers) will only pay out £2000. Leaving you with a £3000 shortfall, if your hamster needs a triple heart bypass and liver transplant.

Can't argue with that
I have a hamster that I love very much. However I would not pay out for insurance, for the simple reason that if they get sick, they die, usually pretty quickly. Their chances of surviving general anaesthetic are less than 50/50, and vets often refuse to operate on them anyway as they are also very difficult to diagnose.
KATIEB_23 01-12-2005, 08:45 I am adopting a dog soon, and Highfield Veterinary Clinic (London Rd) is the nearest vets to me. Can anyone recommend this place, or should I travel further to somewhere else?
