View Full Version : New shops coming to Fargate
Just seen in the Star that planning permission has been granted to rebuild the shops opposite W H Smiths on Fargate into much bigger premises. They say there will be one large new store on 3 levels and 3 smaller units, but they don't say who the tenant is going to be.
Anybody got any ideas or what shops would you like to see there.
I feel that the building would be ideal for a Bigger Next store as the one next door is really small for a major city and would be able to take on the bigger Gap on pinstone street. Also i wouldnt have to go to Next at Meadowhall or pay £3.50 for the Next directory delivery charge!!
Bluelunar 28-01-2004, 10:59 i'd love to see a large shopping mall!! the city centre is a bit crappy for england's 4th largest city!! i think topshop should be made bigger, there should be more variety of shops, like la senza, starbucks (we dont need 2 costa coffees!!), and habitat!
Skatiechik 28-01-2004, 11:07 Noooooooooo not more trendy clothes shops and cosmopolitan coffee shops
At least there are some fairly decent shops in Town, unlike Meadowhall.
I quite like Sheffield City Centre for shops, it has a nice variety.
The only downfall is that it is so spread out from fargate, castle market and the moor.
fnkysknky 28-01-2004, 11:17 Grrrrr Starbucks - most expensive pile of crap I've ever been in. Where the hell do they get the coffee from, Netto???
DaBouncer 28-01-2004, 11:27 I like the all the independant shops of places like Brighton/Hove.
In the lanes and all over the centre there are privately owned shops (much like on Division street but on a bigger scale).
That's the sorta city centre I'd like to see!
Bluelunar 28-01-2004, 11:35 what privately owned shops? u mean those who sell books thats been out of date 10 years ago? or shops that sell fake brand name handbags and clothes? or greeting cards made out of paper?
fnkysknky 28-01-2004, 11:39 Brighton is a great place, decent shops and a good nightlife :)

I completely agree - the last thing we need in the city centre is an outdoor replica of meadowhell. Or a clone of all the other city centres in the country. Please support small business over large corporations!!! :D

Independant shops that sell clothes, games, sports equipment, books, crafts, etc etc Privately owned as in (not owned by big companies or chain stores)... you know good shops.
major decker 28-01-2004, 12:49 I think Fargate needs a mobile phone shop...not enough...Many a time I'm walking down Fargate thinking to myself "I need to update my phone..if only there was a mobile phone shop nearby"
367squadron 28-01-2004, 13:33 I think it's impossible for someone of my age to buy some decent clothes in town you always have to travel to meadowhall which takes ages from my house.
Bring in more upmarket clothes shops like Henry Lloyd shop (Manchester), rockport Shop (Leeds) also to keep up with other major cities we need big department stores like harvey nics or selfridges.
fnkysknky 28-01-2004, 13:36 They start building crap like Henri Lloyd and Rockport shops in Sheffield and I'll not go down town again. You'll want Burberry, Ralph Lauren, Hilfiger and all the other branded designer crap next.

Henry Lloyd and Rockport upmarket?????mmmm....keep them brands in the cheapo designer outlets please
DaBouncer 28-01-2004, 14:01 Yeah I own two pair of Rockport Boots, Stone Island Tops, Hilfiger etc etc and I would agree that we DONT want those shops in town. It's ok if department stores want to sell em (i.e. Debenhams) but I wouldn't want to see dedicated tosh!
Some leather jacket shops too.... in NYC they have these leather jacket stores with all sorts of jackets (design and colouring wise) and they are amazing!
A real variety of stores is required!
367squadron 28-01-2004, 14:03 They are just examples what i was trying to get accross is the lack of specialist shops like rockport, Henri Lloyd shops.
Anyways theres nothing wrong with these sort of shops.

Not enough?! How the bloody hell many do you want?! There's 3 next door to each other down the bottom end of Fargate, then there's The Link just across from there, not to mention the fact that Virgin Megastore, Index and Dixons sell mobiles.
jackthedog 28-01-2004, 14:31 I think that's what he meant... :)
DaBouncer 28-01-2004, 14:31 Rich... I think Major Decker was going for a spot of Sarcasm!

erm....hello....Mcfly....(makes a knocking gesture on your forehead)
A shop that sold decent lads clothes that were not designer labels would be nice, Where did Stolen fron Ivor go? not excellent but cheaper than skateboard shop in Chapel Walk, and he would go there too. Will not go in any other shop in town and Meadowhall just as bad and a nightmare too.
I love to go and have a shop when i go on holiday as there are usually much more exciting shops elsewhere.
Sam Miguel 28-01-2004, 18:28 A toy-shop.
Yes.
Considering that there are only a couple of toy-shops in Sheffield and neither of them are in town (Toys-r-us doesn't count as it's just an impersonal warehouse), I think the kids deserve something better.
And a nice posh sweet-shop next door would be nice.
fredsredhat 28-01-2004, 20:35 Rockport? Stone Island? why do people buy these things? say on average (guessing from my workmates ) a jumper costs £90. what does it do different to my £5 jumper form primark? will people like me more? will it save me from a pillaging viking? make me a bacon sandwich? and no it isn't made better, i have a t shirt that cost £4 thats lasted way way longer than a workmates £3million designer thingy. do you people judge each other on how much your shirt cost? sad sad people. btw i'm not an old git who's past it, i'm a healthy 24 year old who just cant justify spending £110 on a pair of shoes.
rickmiles85 28-01-2004, 20:49 Sorry but if im not mistaken! Where is River Island?!
Bluelunar 29-01-2004, 20:00 i dont think theres a river island in town.
a toy shop? dont they have a toymaster somewhere? and argos sells plenty of toys. not to mention all those games shops. a candy shop is nice tho :D
*Twinkle* 29-01-2004, 20:10 As far as I know, there's no river island in town...
Town could do with a:
-La senza
-Bath and body works (there used to be one in meadowhall...but it closed  )
-Warehouse
-Virgin Vie cosmetics shop!
:D
Whatever goes there, i hope its not just the same shops meadowhall has.
We need something like an MVC or a Subway closer the the city centre :P
I know for sure that Subway are looking for a property in the "heart of the city" and I think there's a good chance it may be there, although I hear plans for a simlar development to the shops on Pinstone street may go ahed.
habitat and h&m would be nice, but small, independent shops are better
jackthedog 30-01-2004, 11:06 Yeah, a good toyshop would be excellent, like the old Redgates shop. That was fantastic - a proper toyshop.
I remember getting excited about going to that place, with all the exciting things hanging in the middle where the lifts were. Fantastic.
It had the magic that Toys R Us lacks.
Mind you, I think toys lack the magic they once had. Kids want X-Box and Nokia these days.
I'd like to see a bigger Fopp, like the one in Nottingham. And Sheffield could do with a Muji too, so lets get one of those in.
Bluelunar 30-01-2004, 11:08 an art shop selling artist equipments would be nice!!
jackthedog 30-01-2004, 11:15 We used to have two art shops didn't we, but they've both long gone. Shame that.
fnkysknky 30-01-2004, 11:23 We've got a Subway on Division Street, doubt they'll give us another one for a while yet.
Greenback 30-01-2004, 11:29 Ugh! Got to say I'm surprised at the support for Subway on here. Tried a sandwich from one of these places a few years ago in Huddersfield (leading the way as usual  ) and didn't like it one bit.
Best sandwich shop in Sheffield for me is Relish on West Street. Great choice of fillings, nice bread (ie. not rock-hard), and not the McDonalds-style experience that Subway seems to be...

As Duffman said, the owner wants to put another one in the city centre, but the problem was there is no free units which are suitable.... these might be!
jackthedog 30-01-2004, 11:49 A Lily's pork shop would be nice.
Mmmmm, Lily's.
Lickable 30-01-2004, 11:52 There is a good art shop in hillsborough, for whoever it was that asked!
Toymaster is in that big building they call... hmmm what do they call it... sorry guys cant remember... Its like debenahms but further down the moor! Atkinsons?
I think sheffield needs...
A good city centre based second hand music and film shop
A bigger Forbidden planet
The return of the Star store
River Island
Fancy dress shop offering more than just 70s
Stolen fron Ivor
Finnally, a free estate agent offering free houses just for fun!
jackthedog 30-01-2004, 12:01 Where's this art shop in Hillsborough? What's it called?
I think the art shop is on Middlewoor road nr the KFC (not sure on the name), or if you're in town there's Pinders on charter row next to Stokes tiles opp' Atkinsons, and try the works on the moor, I got some materials from there, they are good for the price you pay and not just some cheap tack!
DM:thumbsup:
jackthedog 30-01-2004, 12:13 Pinders would seem like the definitive place, but the bank wouldn't let me re-mortgage the house in order to shop there.

I'd like to see a Fopp with a decent vinyl section, like it used to have before they just became a shop for cheap dvds.
It seems a bit silly when you're having to go to London to buy records by Sheffield bands because so few people sell them

There are a few second-hand record shops in town, so it depends what you mean by music? As for second-hand movie shops, what did you mean? If I want an old film I will buy the remastered DVD from some web site for less than the price of a second-hand one. Please explain.

Don't use them then, simple.
major decker 30-01-2004, 14:52 I don't...doesn't mean I like them there though
Don't know you but I would imagine you don't use Brothels...that mean you wouldn't mind one on your street??
I was first introduced to Subway when I lived in Toronto for a short time about 5 years ago and it's not just your 'chain store rubbish'. Sorry Greenback but you must've just gone on a bad day.
I've found that the bread is always the right texture (and there's more than one type to choose from), there's loads of fillings to choose from (all kept fresh and warm/cold where necessary) and they sell cookies, crisps and other bits to go with your sandwiches.
I still say it's alot more satisfying than one of McDonalds crappy offerings. It looks like plastic, smells like plastic, tastes like plastic, comes in plastic, you eat it with plastic and you probably need plastic to pay for it. ;)
We also need a Tim Hortons over here.....desperately! Mmmm coffee and every flavour muffin/donut you could think of. Anyone been to Tim Hortons in the states or Canada?

I agree. A nice big toy shop. Something like Jolly giants/Toys-R-Us/Hamleys/Red gates...
We could do with a Tesco Express or Sainsburys Central on Fargate. Currently we've only got Marks and Spencer (expensive) and Summerfield (rubbish) as supermarkets in the city centre. Tesco on West Street and Sainsburys on the Moor are too far out to visit during lunch hour.

I totally agree on the FP and Star Store thing, even though i picked up some absolute bargains when Star Store closed.
The forbidden planet shop is a joke with it's current size. The one in london is utterly amazing and the one in Edinburgh defys belief, its so huge.

There are no decent record shops in the city anymore, places like record collector etc. are too far away, and jacks moved into "the smallest shop ever" :P
I love 7" singles, and I cant find them anymore :( Virgin and HMV sometimes have them but hardly ever anymore :(
Ive missed out on so much stuff because i simply cannot find it in town :(
When people say things like "so and so should re-open", you have to think "why did they close in the first place?" ;)
Starstore used to be a part of a much larger local "chain" of shops which included:
Last Picture Show - Meadowhall
Frames of Mind - Meadowhall
Area 51 - Meadowhall
Starstore - Town
Last Picture Show - Trafford Centre
Starstore.com
only LpS (not sure if the trafford centre one is still there) and Frames of mind (now Bel-air) are around

There's a proper old fashioned fancy dress shop on Duke Street, near the Parkway roundabout.
I believe it's called Magyck Fancy Dress, the number'll be in t' Yellow Pages if you want to ring up and see what they've got, unfortunately they don't have a web site like Mr Ben's at Crookes and Party City on Ecclesall Road have.

wheres this pinders shop?
Pinders is near moorfoot, across the road from Wickes DIY on a street called "Moore Street" :)
http://www.pinders.uk.com/contactus/contactusbanner.html
Bluelunar 01-02-2004, 18:49 oooh tyty!
i cant see the map very clearly, is it opposite staples? sorry i dunno where moore street is >___<!
No, its opposite Wickes DIY  (and ive got my screen res @ 1280x1024  )
hounsfieldjr 01-02-2004, 20:41 Isn't there a shop that sells artists' materials on West Street? Sure I've seen some stuff in the window of a shop in the same block as the Christian bookshop and the motorised wheelchair shop.
As for shops generally, I hope that whatever shops do move in don't just end up dragging business back from Meadowhall. We need to support Meadowhall (as nasty and impersonal as it is) because of the jobs there. It won't do the city any good if it's just a tug of war between M'hall and the city centre. The city centre needs to have shops that can't necessarily be found at M'hall.
I also agree that we should have as many small independent shops as possible, and avoid the usual American chains. Against that, I'd like to see us try and attract some of the big European retailers that don't have much of a presence in the UK at the moment (eg, El Corte Ingles from Spain, Rinascente from Italy and Galaries Lafayette from France).
Whoever moves in, I hope the planners insist on them staying open till 7.30 so people can shop after work as well as at lunchtime. Opening hours are holding back the city centre's retail economy massively.
Bluelunar 01-02-2004, 20:59 ok, i'll try look out for pinders tomorrow when i go to skool! >___<
manchester city centre works well with the trafford centre! maybe its bcuz it has a wide range of quality shops in the city centre? we definetly need an up market department store like selfridges, a shop like habitat, and a cyber cafe! every big city centre needs a cyber cafe these days! not to mention a range of restaurants like korean, spanish, indian, french!
We have a cyber cafe!
its near the city hall :)
Bluelunar 01-02-2004, 21:32 sorry, but which is the city hall?? >______<
is it the one opposite hsbc?
lol, thats the cathedral i think ;)
The city hall is opposite John Lewis'
I think the Cyber Café is called "havanna's" as well if it helps ;)
Bluelunar 01-02-2004, 22:54 oooh thx! i never been to that area before! i go check it out tomorrow! are there any shops around there?
:D
if you carry on in that direction (down Division St.) there are some beauty shops, then Fopp (music & DVD), then some clothes shops and finally "the forum" which has all sorts of alternitive clothes/music etc. as well as the subway (excellent sandwiches!)
I PM'd you a little map pointing all that out :)

tslogf74 06-02-2004, 18:39 There are better places in NYC to buy a sandwich than Subway but as far as Sheffield goes a meatball, lettuce, mayo, chilli sauce and jalepeno sanwich is the breakfast of kings.
Not that I don't appreciate a good Yorkshire pudding too.
jackthedog 06-02-2004, 23:18 I cant help but think that more chainstores is not what we need in Sheffield.
Every city has the same department stores, we have a few big ones and we should leave it at that.
Lets get some more unique shops in, like one-off shops that you dont get everywhere else.
That and an Apple store.
tslogf74 07-02-2004, 13:22 Always makes me laugh when my mum goes anywhere in the UK she hunts down Marks and Spencer and C&A in case they have different stock than the ones back home.
Generally I don't think they would be bad for the city centre. There's plenty of room for independant shops in places like Broomhill, people will find them and anyone who comes here to visit won't think "what a dump".*
*Unless they come off the M1 at junction 34 that is.
A jeans shop like there used to be nr Coles, that sells all the hiddeous jeans that kids wear or almost do anyway with there pants hangin out.
A shop that sells good pictures, maybe athena type thing or arty shop there is an excellent one on York.
Mind you i hate shopping, so i won't be going unless necessary anyway.
A bank with a person in it on a Saturday would be great too. Sick of machines that don't work.
Nice ladies underwear shop, tasteful stuff though not tacky, think that is why Ann Summers didn't work. Embarassment factor, mums don't like being seen coming out of there :o
Toilets that are open would be the best thing though:thumbsup:
noseyrosie 07-02-2004, 17:17 Thing is, Fargate's a really strange mixture, it's mostly big chain stores, that are BIG ENOUGH (we don't need an extension on Next! [sorry]), and all the independent shops are slightly out of the main area, so on Division Street or West Street, or on little back streets.
It's no wonder SOulluna hasn't been up Division Street way. And anyway, good as the little independent shops are (has anyone been in the cute little glow in the dark bit in Enchanted Wood near the Forum?) they are expensive and mostly sell knick-knacks or boutique clothes, which are nice but unneccessary.
On the other hand, I love these kind of shops! Partytime(i think it's called that) and Record Collector in Broomhill are really nice, and little cafes that CARE, and have good food and drinks like Vittles would be nice. Those AWFUL shops next to Lush that play incredibly loud pop music aaaall daaaay loooong from huge speakers...you know the ones i mean. I would LOVE to see something completely unexpected like a fair trade shop or a music shop like Fox's. That'd be nice.

Just read this. Absolutely right, but! Being me, please can they just move H&M to town so that I don't have to go to M'Hell every time I want to buy reasonably priced, NICE clothes. Please?
Other than that give me one off shops and more interesting things ANY day.
And...when, and what are they doing with the upstairs of The Forum?

Been planning to make it into a pool room for ages. Believe it when I see it. It's not such a cool idea as it seemed 2 years ago.....
jackthedog 09-02-2004, 08:25 A pool room is an underuse of the upstairs of the forum. I cant believe it's not been successful up there in recent years, I remember thinking it was fantastic when it was first open.
It should be as popular as the Corn Exchange in L**ds. (edited for language)
Sheffield needs a proper serious (mountain) bike shop too.
The ones we have are pathetic.
Not really Fargate material though eh.
a music shop like Fox's. That'd be nice
I thought we already had a Fox's music store in town...
noseyrosie 09-02-2004, 16:44 I think the fox's shut and turned into berkentex brides or whatever that shop is. I'd like to see a Hobgoblin or Music Room folk music shop (like in Cleckheaton, L***s and Nottingham)...though I'm sure that wouldn't be the general feeling!!!
noseyrosie 09-02-2004, 16:48 And the upstairs of the Forum a pool room?!!! Who thought that one up! When I was little it used to have a circus shop, a bead shop, and all kinds of cool things, now it's home to that stupid boutique, the owners of which obviously weren't thinking of the regular clientele of the forum when they put it there. I like the other shops though (although tbh I don't have much of interest in snowboarding or vinyl), but it needs a circus shop....or a climbing wall, or <insert another stupid unfeasible idea here>! Wow!

Too right, I'm a 20 year old female and I laugh inside when I hear friends talking about their skirt that cost £65 or how they got this stunning top for £30. They're no richer than me, in fact many are poorer, yet they seem to see it as a necessity to buy expensive piles of cr*ap to wear! Primark is good, although can be a little tacky, but it sells the same stuff as Topshop, Burtons, Miss Selfridge and Dorothy Perkin's at a fraction of the price. In a world where clothes go out of fashion after about a week, why on earth would you spend so much money on one garment?!

Always makes me laugh when my mum goes anywhere in the UK she hunts down Marks and Spencer and C&A in case they have different stock than the ones back home.
Generally I don't think they would be bad for the city centre. There's plenty of room for independant shops in places like Broomhill, people will find them and anyone who comes here to visit won't think "what a dump".*
*Unless they come off the M1 at junction 34 that is.
sorry to disappoint you but C&A closed all their UK stores down about 3 years ago! Most of their old shops were taken over by Primark or catalogue returns shops - d'oh!

Open your eyes mate, there's at least 3 mobile phone shops within a stone's throw of each other, and that's the specialised ones, without mentioning the fact that both Dixons and Virgin Megastore sell mobiles.
There's the Orange shop next to Smiths, the T-Mobile shop next door to that, the O2 shop next to Dixons, Vodafone shop further down next door to the BT shop, and of course The Link directly opposite the Vodafone shop to the left of the entrance to Chapel Walk... How many more do you want eh?
I'm not having a go at you, I'm just pointing out that there are already several shops in the Fargate vicinity that sell mobile phones, so there's not really much call for any more.
Personally I'd like to see more computer game shops down that end, sure as mentioned Virgin and Dixons sell games, and they have a few in Smiths, but really there's only GAME which specialises in the sale of computer and console games, namely the Fargate one and the one at the top of Debenhams down the Moor.
If only they'd kept the big one on the corner of Pinstone St/Barkers Pool open, it was a big shop that, and nearly always packed, especially on a Saturday.

I think that was supposed to be sarcasm.

Theres always GameStation on the Moor. Always got plenty of reasonably priced pre-owned stuff in, and loads of retro games/consoles as well.
