Just tried to get into Hutcliffe Wood Crematoria to visit family plaque. Gates locked. Plenty of people trying to get in(no jokes please), does anyone know why they are shut. Looked on the website and it says opening hours are 10.00 - 5.00.

How strange. I know that when it gets to this time of year they tend to close earlier but it should be open now as you say.

I can't find any contact details for you to hand. Do you have a number to call?

Don't have a contact No (not one that will have someone there on a Sunday) I have looked on the web site but no mention of Sunday closing. I do recall a while back that some of the locals living in the area had complained about the cars going up their road on a Sundays but no mention of them closing on Sundays because of this. I would have thought that Sunday would be the most popular day for visitors.

Maybe it's just that the keeper is ill?

Forgot to mention, tried both main entrances.

There are three entrances. I don't know why the Periwood Lane entrance is shut on a Sunday (both amuses and annoys me seeing loads of cars driving up only to reverse back down), but threre is an entrance on Abbey Lane and one on Hutcliffe Wood Road. I suspect the latter should be open.

If anyone's interested; I spoke to Bereavement Services this morning who explained that the guy who does the gates had gone on holiday and that the ground staff who were tasked with his duties managed to overlook opening the gates. The lady I spoke to apologised.
Here ends the mystery.
