From the Herries Road entrance of The Northern General Hospital you can see a humungous white, warehousey type building with loads of floodlights on top of the hill, rather a blot on the landscape I think.

I thought I'd have a little nosey to see what it was but was unable to find it.

Anybody any idea where/ what it is?

I CANT BELIEVE SOMEONE ELSE HAS DONE THIS!!!

I'm so glad someone else has noticed this mystery, I thought it was just me going mad!

Last year I went on a hunt to try and find it after noticing it from that very place, but couldn't locate it at all!

WHAT IS IT? WHERE IS IT?

How mad is that!?

the building that you can see is Sheffield Uniteds football academy that is on the old football ground on shirecliffe lane.I don't think that the council realised that is was going to be as big as this.On the same subject if you look towards Middlewood from halifax road you can see what a monstrosity the inflatable academy building for Sheffield Wednesday is as well.

Someone ought to draw a list up of all the mysterious building in Sheffield.

I keep getting all my hopes of 'secret government facilities' dashed.

Just when I think something is going to turn out to be a hanger for UFOs or the like, somebody destroys it all by saying it's a cash and carry, or a sports hall, or DSS office.

Oh for a bit of excitement.

Next time I get excited about something like this, can people just lie, and pretend it is an inter-stellar space station, like that one in Men In Black?
Or a secret service headquarters like the one with the impenetrable computer vault in it that Tom Cruise drops into in Mission Impossible...

JTD - it is really an interstallar space port but all the posts about it get culled and replaced by boring explanations! Fortunately I have AntiCull [tm] turned on :)

Nah, it would be underground so you can't see it.:P

Na na na! I know how to find it :P

I found it by accident, when I went jogging up to the Parkwood landfill site last year (bad idea, but I have to know my enemy).

Look at this map (http://www.multimap.com/map/browse.cgi?X=435500&Y=390000&width=500&height=300&client=public&gride=436940&gridn=391323&keepicon=false&coordsys=gb&addr1=&addr2=&addr3=&pc=&advanced=&lang=&scale=10000&down.x=14&down.y=15)

Where Cooks Wood Road meets Shirecliffe Road, the road levels out. Take a right into the housing estate (heading towards the Northern General Hospital, not the landfill site).

Thread your way to the left of the estate (follow an imaginary route to the hospital) and you'll eventually find the building. It's surrounded by a housing estate, so you really have to look for it. I have no idea how to get there by car...

I knew it was some sort of training centre, but not which type specifically...so thank you to feederfil and h20 for the info!

Across the roundabout from the Safeway at the bottom of Ecclesall Rd, beside the new Hot-tub Emporium - is a HUGE unmarked grey building with no doors, windows, signage or discernable entrance.

The rumourmill suggests;
1. Nuclear bunker/HQ
2. Power substation
3. Old carpark
4. Masonic lodge
(these are suggestions by various people I have asked!!?!?)

If anyone has read any Douglas Adams...I'll go with the theory that it is simply an SEP (Someone Elses Problem) - and thus no-one ever questions its presence.

Any ideas anyone?

Yay, I was hoping that some one would have posted asking about that big grey one, unfortunatly no-one has answered it yet:( ..............

Does anyone know what that building actually is ? ? ?

Oh, ... :-( I think I found the answer on another recent thread Originally posted by Cols The one on the Charter Row / Hanover roundabout gets my vote too. I think it's some kind of electricity sub station owned by Yorkshire Electric but it looks more like a prison. Originally posted by MrHelicopter This really is the ugliest building ever. I'm told that this is where the main electricity supply comes in to the City Centre before it is stepped down to a more usable voltage. I guess other City Centres have the same thing - but as ugly as this?

Look in the thread about the ugliest buildings in sheffield.

I dont know how to provide a link to it because i'm technically inept, but I know that particular hideous creation is discussed in detail in that thread...

But dont let them feed you that substation rubbish. Anyone with a bit of sense can see that it's infact a government owned facility for breeding dinosaurs that will be trained (inside the manpower services building across the road, hence all the sectret underground tunnels) to be efficient fighting machines and be used by the military in future conflicts.

It's just common sense, that's why it's so tall and thin. Anyone can see that.

To be exact it is on Firshill Cres just off Shirecliffe Road.
The local residents all had double glazing fitted because of the extra traffic that was thought to be going there.
