View Full Version : Choosing a name for a Baby Boy
Babooshka 15-10-2005, 20:30 Just had the shock of my life whilst undergoing a 20 wk scan. Have been convinced I was having a girl. Couldn't have been more wrong. Only chose girls names before, like an idiot. Now struggling deciding on boys names. I have found one that I really like but the other half is not quite as convinced. Trouble is, I find most boys names rather uninteresting and would like something a little more uncommon (NOT WEIRD like Winthrop or something!) Any suggestions?
I have 3 boys Kieran David, Nathan Louis and Ryan George!
I personally found boys names easier than girls because there were less I liked!
I had quite a chuckle going through all the names and their meanings...
I always liked Cameron but was put off when I realised it means 'crooked nose'.... :hihi:
Good luck with the pregnancy and I am sure you'll know the right name, you've still got plenty of time.
;)
Babooshka 15-10-2005, 20:39 Funny that...I noticed the 'crooked nose' thing just last night.
I quite like the name Luke.
what about William or Shaun?
I've always toyed with the idea that if I ever get a son (unlikely I know but stranger things have happened) I'd consider Bruce as a name, which sort of comes from my being a fan of the late Bruce Lee even though he was before my time.
Bruce or William shortened to Billy I've always liked, or David after my Brother.
For girls, I'd choose Diana or Diane after my Mum probably, possibly even Alice after both my Mum's mother who's still alive, or my Dad's mother who died in 1992.
GabbleRatcht 15-10-2005, 21:09 We were convincied our kid was a girl, descided not to ask at scans.
So, of course, it was a boy.
We had loads of girls names, best of which Maeve, means 'intoxicating one';)
We only had one boy name, so he is Hal ! Due to his Dads state of mind at the time.
Points to who knows why :D
*Twinkle* 15-10-2005, 21:15 In a very long time when I get all maternal (yeah yeah) my ickle boy will be Ben Robert... For sure!
Not sure what I'd call a little girl though... Used to like Melissa, but object to this "Mel" thing going on... lol!
I like Oliver, Daniel and Charlie as boys names :)
Hopefully it'll be a while before I have to put them to use though!
ToryCynic 15-10-2005, 21:54 Call it Alex!
:)
lizzmobile 15-10-2005, 22:10 Felix, (our son), Oscar, Mylo.
All well groovy and stand the test of time. His two other names are family oriented; we liked a combination of new 'energy' and tradition.
FairyNormal 15-10-2005, 22:12 My boy is called Isaac (Joel Alexander)which means 'Joyful'.
If he wasn't named Isaac, he would've been called Oscar.
Other nice boys names are Alfie, Lewis, and Tobias/Toby.
Steer clear of the Jordans, Callums and Connors . Every class has several of each!!!
For a girl I love Esme.
Good luck with the pregnancy!
lizzmobile 15-10-2005, 22:13 Oops forgot to ask - would you be interested a belly cast when you are around 8 moons? God fun and a touching souvenir of a very special time. Or add it to a blessingway and go the whole hog! Every woman should have a blessingway, the most moving ceremony I have EVER been to!
And congratulations, of course, c'est une bonne nouvelle!

Phanerothyme 15-10-2005, 22:19 My boy is Erik - Rich, Brave, Strong.
I've always liked Peregrine and Merlin. Great names both.
lizzmobile 15-10-2005, 22:35 Fetishfairy, I LOVE your signature! It is quite unique!
Oh yeah, and I love Merlin too... full of mystery and magical powers.
I love Merlin too- she's ginger and white and very very furry (and she's named after the Rolls Royce engine, not the magician) and thanks to a lovely cardiologist and her pills, she has today found her purr again, after several weeks without.
But doh! That wasn't what the thread was about! Just trying to say that yes, Merlin's a lovely name, but the kid will take a bit of stick for it.
GothicCharm 15-10-2005, 23:09 My favourite boy's names are clayton, philip and omen..
Sandra1961 15-10-2005, 23:54 What about something like Harley or Romeo? :D
Pseudonym 16-10-2005, 05:45 All children should be given a number, until such time that they're old enough and wise enough to choose the name that they wish to be known by, in my humble opinion.
Too many fond parents have blighted the formative years of their adored offspring by saddling them with a name that, although it may at the time have sounded modern, or unusual, or was chosen as a mark of respect to a relative, all too often is mocked, or abbreviated and perhaps coupled with a topical item or personality and frequently used in a derogatory sense by their peers.
As my suggestion is hardly likely to be adopted, the least you can do for the poor defenceless little beggars, is to give them a minimum of three to four christian names. As they grow up, they can then pick the most appropriate one to be called, one that suits them personally.
This has to be an improvement on being stuck with the one that was popular at the time, was gaelic for 'valour', was the name of a member of the band that you followed, or was a made-up one concocted to be different and unique... They may even thank you for your consideration one day... That's if they're still speaking civily to you by the time they reach their teens, of course! ;)
When having our son, I really liked Reuben James as a name. The most popular names in my school at the moment (and therefore ones to avoid IMO) are Harry, Jack and George.
My son's name is Joseph. I picked it so that he could shorten it it to Joe, a little more streetwise, which of course he has done.
It also handy for letting him know when I'm annoyed, as his full name gets bellowed up the stairs. ;)
Typically, he's seen the list of names I compiled when I was expecting, and tells me he wishes I'd picked 'Ethan' instead. I've never met anyone who was 100% happy with the name their parents chose for them.
*vanessa* 16-10-2005, 12:12 I've got three boys.
William Joseph, gets shortened to Will Usually
Christopher James
and
Robert Joshua, he is always called Bertie tho, and I have never met another Bertie yet. We chose Robert because when we asked the other two what they would want to call the baby, they said Bertie after Bertie the bus! Robert was the only name we liked that could be shortened to Bertie.
George, Jack, Sam, Harry and Connor are all really common at school at the moment.
Good Luck!
Vanessa
evildrneil 16-10-2005, 12:28 I kinda like Lucien - but then again I have been told I have odd taste in names before *blush*

'tis true, but that's true of lots of names. I think even the magician and the engine are named after the bird.
My son is called Lucan, if hed been a girl my wife choose the name foal.:|
My little boy is called Jay, whatever you pick make sure it sounds right with your surname though one person called their son Dwain and the last name was Pipe!!! :loopy:
Lucy-Lastic 16-10-2005, 14:46 Ive got a Morgan John and an Ivan Alexander (John is a family name - Ivan is the Russian form of John). I love Isaac for a boy - means laughter I think.

Isaac seems to have become quite popular all of a sudden. In fact, older names do seem to be making a bit of a comeback, thank goodness.
Some kids' names around today smack of child cruelty with a vengeance. I mean, a little boy called Florian or Orlando? It's just inviting other kids to beat him up in the playground  Don't these parents think about what they're doing to their children? I hope they won't be expecting their children to keep them in old age!

cloza1991 16-10-2005, 18:17 the three names i like would be : Ethan,Kieron and Aaron

Jimbob1989 16-10-2005, 18:23 Sean? most people spell it Shaun, but it can be spelt Sean as well, and not many people have that name I believe, atleast not spelt that way.

My Isaac is 8 and all the Isaac's we've met so far have all been younger, or a lot lot older (in their 80's!)
Maybe we started a tend!!!

smellie1 18-10-2005, 16:44 Congratulations babooshka!
The same thing happened to me about a year ago! Was convinced I was having a girl, and the man doing the scan laughed at me!
We had a blackboard in the kitchen with a list of names and kept adding/crossing names off for months. Eventually decided on Logan the day after he was born! I wanted to call him George, after my grandad but the deal was that my husband could choose the first name for a boy.
It's been the most amazing year of our lives, labour was great- don't believe the hype!, but accept the drugs! and Logan is fantastic. All the best
