View Full Version : Famous People From Rotherham
Sam @ Dearne 14-10-2005, 19:29 I know its not Sheffield, but almost, get your thinking caps on and lets see if we can cobble together a list of famous Rotherham lads and lasses.
I'll start you all off with a couple of rouges
The Chuckle Brothers & Jive Bunny.
Please please please, lets come up with something a bit better. I am often embarressed when I get into a discussion about home towns and its famous sons and daughters. Another one I have just thought of is
Colonol H.Jones, the guy who got a VC in the Falklands
Thanks in advance.
Yellowrose 14-10-2005, 19:32 Does William Hague count? I'd say not, but he went to my school, irritating little fart.
Sam @ Dearne 14-10-2005, 19:36 I grudgingly suppose he does, Wath would be considered as Rotherham.
I have just remembered another Wath boy, Toby Foster, the comedian, my wife was at Wath Comp at the same time.

When was your wife at Wath? I was there 70-75,probably before your time.
Yellowrose 14-10-2005, 19:50 Think Saxon are from Barnsley.
Sam @ Dearne 14-10-2005, 19:53 One of the band Saxon lived just outside the school gates at Swinton Comp, I remember that well as I went to Swinton.
My wife was at Wath in the 80's she is 36 now.
Yellowrose 14-10-2005, 19:59 Swinton was my third choice, after Mexborough. Sorry Swinton. I remember having a good old drink in the Woodman after getting my O level results.
Sam @ Dearne 14-10-2005, 20:07 I now live in Mexborough, I must have been a murderer in a past life for that !!! Woodman eh ! Not been in there for a while, I often go in the Kings Head though
Col. H. Jones. VC. Parachute Regiment, came from Putney nr. London. Sergeant Ian Mackay VC, Parachute Regiment, came from Wortley originally and resided near Rotherham. Please get your facts right when discussing VC holders. The least we can do when discussing men who gave their lives in service to their country.
Sam @ Dearne 14-10-2005, 20:36 Apologies dude. Hope you won't lose any sleep over it! If the worst thing I do in life is mix up my VC holders home towns, I am sure I will still go to heaven. Thank god I didn't say they had won a GC or god forbid a Purple Heart.
Thanks for putting me straight, I feel suitably chastised.
Yellowrose 14-10-2005, 20:38 Youve been through enough slinky if you live in Mexborough, dont be too hard on yourself.
I lived in Denaby Main for a short while, and if I was bored I would shop in Mexborough. Well off for cheap shops and charity shops. Not the place it used to be. What happened to the Market???
Glenn1959 15-10-2005, 19:01 How can you publicly admit to the Chuckle Bros....bout as funny as the pox!!

relight9 16-10-2005, 08:44 Donald Pleasance - His father lived in the station house, and may have been the station-master at the old Ecclesfield station on Station Road, the one between Ecclesfield Common and Thorpe Hesley.
My mum recalled Donald Pleasance showing up at school i think, but they moved south before Donald was very old.
Don't know if the dates can be clarified, and anything confirmed with it being a railway anecdote ?
Yellowrose 17-10-2005, 12:52 Yeah forgot all about Peter Elliot. Used to live next door but one to him. I played once or twice with his sister Linda, but she was a bit older than me. I remember Peter as a toddler.

Trishtee 18-10-2005, 22:13 VC Ian McKay, killed in the Falklands. I know his mother who sadly lost her other two sons to cystic fibrosis. Ian was not born with this dreadful illness - how ironic it was for him to lose his life in such a dreadful way.

What about Captain Webb the English Channel swimmer?
what about brian the dinasaur that sat morn charracture and iv just been told that freddy trueman was from maltby
GGGGGGrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrreat somebody else knows about brian the dinasaur, i'm not going mad, I have been telling people about this local rotherham hero for years and no one believes me. If I remember rightly he was a big pink dinasaur with a leather jacket that had Guns and Roses on the back. he was born just after jurassic park was out , the story went something like this. He was found down at the aldwarke sewage plant as a dinasaur egg by his "father Les Unsworth who ran the happy friar chip shop in dalton brook, he had a little brother called Derek who to brians dismay was a Take that fan.
He used to interview all the pop stars of the day and loved to embarrass the snooty ones talking in his rotherham accent...."ey up love you look alreight fancy a snog" and other such put downs. He was so famous locally that Staniforths the bakers made a brian gingerbread man.
If anyone knows of his whereabouts or more info on brian let me know he was my hero.
What about the 2 footballing brothers Ian and Glynn Snodin who were from Thrybergh, Boxer Mick Mills was from Dinnington, page 3 models Tracy Dixon and Diane Willoughby went to Thrybergh Comp.
The drummer from Muse is also a Rotherham lad I believe.

I think they lived at Cawthorne, Barnsley. Don't know where their place of birth was.
Nigel Womersle 09-03-2008, 00:38 What about Captain Webb the English Channel swimmer?
He was a 'match' for anyone. You have to be an oldie to get that one.
Nigel Womersle 09-03-2008, 00:41 think Eric Portman was from there
Eric was actually from the Huddersfield area. He did and still does have relatives in the Thorpe Hesley area. He was a distant relation.
Nigel Womersle 09-03-2008, 00:49 Donald Pleasance - His father lived in the station house, and may have been the station-master at the old Ecclesfield station on Station Road, the one between Ecclesfield Common and Thorpe Hesley.

Don't know if the dates can be clarified, and anything confirmed with it being a railway anecdote ?
Donald Pleasence's father was Station Master at the Ecclesfield Top Station. Donald himself went to the old Ecclesfield Grammar School, and his name is still on the honours board there. He must have moved south later as his first wife was actually from the street where I live. My cousin went to school with him in Ecclesfield and, many years ago she went to New York. She and her daughter were in the street when up came Donald P and said 'I am sure you are from Ecclesfield. I went to school with you'. He took her and her daughter out one evening for dinner whilst they were in NY. Small world.
upinwath 09-03-2008, 05:45 Does William Hague count? I'd say not, but he went to my school, irritating little fart.
He lived in Wentworth at the time just in case no one has mentioned it.
By the way William was far from an "irritating little fart". I thought he had a great humour as well as being very bright. Those of us that knew him better realised that.
Of course the plebs were pigged off as they were always going to end up as nothings while he had a future.
sharrovian 09-03-2008, 21:44 Back around 1950 I used to swim regularly at the old Millhouses Pool in Sheffield and remember that Phil Rising did some training there before swimming the English Channel, I'm sure he came from Rotherham.
Gingerbarf 10-03-2008, 04:59 Did John Prescott not live in Brinsworth??? I remember him visiting his old house on Ellis or Duncan Street about 5 years ago?? Think he's a Hull boy but did live in Rotherham if that counts. Clarkson was from Conisbrough, not sure if that is Donny or Rotherham??
crookesey 10-03-2008, 13:10 Jeremy Clarkson
Doncaster if my memory is still in working order. His mother was a Kilner (of Kilner Jar fame) from Conisborough.
Did John Prescott not live in Brinsworth??? I remember him visiting his old house on Ellis or Duncan Street about 5 years ago?? Think he's a Hull boy but did live in Rotherham if that counts. Clarkson was from Conisbrough, not sure if that is Donny or Rotherham??
John Prescott is from Ellesmere Port originally (Near Chester hence I know)
CHAIRBOY 10-03-2008, 13:40 Gordon banks brother boozers in the magpies............my mate goerge hand was in the glitterband........and i've supported doctor feelgood........twice.......and was nearly on calander kids once!
Gordon Banks shouldn't be in the list.
CHAIRBOY 10-03-2008, 14:11 Wasn't the late BBC presenter, Michael Cooke, of Radio Sheffield and BBC North, from Rotherham or am I just been swayed by all the work he did at Rotherham Civic Theatre?
I think they lived at Cawthorne, Barnsley. Don't know where their place of birth was.
Rikki Lee (Audrey Tomlinson) was born n brought up in Attercliffe, she went to school with my dad. My dad kept in touch & we as a family went to see them in cabaret loadsa times, always going backstage. Can remember visiting them at their home in Cawthorne. They were a wonderful couple, so full of fun & down to Earth.
Percy Sugden, just forgot his real name lived in Micklebrough.
Its Micklebring not Micklebrough and its in Doncaster not Rotherham, that also excludes one of the Chuckle brothers
Sandy Powell has been mentioned. He was a very popular comedian many years ago, and I remember talking to him in the mid-1960s. He was in that group of comics of the 1930s-1940s era that included Jewel & Warriss (from Sheffield). He did write an autobiography and I think it was called Can You Hear Me Mother?, which was, of course, his catchphrase.
On a literary note, I do believe that Anthony Trollope's wife came from Rotherham. Not many people know that!
Does anyone remember a lad from Rawmarsh called David Depledge? He was not exactly famous, but he went to London and became a literary journalist. He worked on Smith's Trade News for some years, and interviewed a number of famous authors.
shihtzumad 07-10-2008, 10:34 What about Billie Pearce comedian, am sure he is was from Rotherham
In my earlier message, I forgot to mention John Harris, the author. John started out as a cartoonist with the Rotherham Advertiser, and was later with the old Sheffield Telegraph in a similar capacity. He was a brilliant cartoonist. He later joined the Navy, then in subsequent years, following a return to South Yorkshire (he finally left about 1954), he wrote the best seller 'The Sea Shall Not Have Them', and it was so successful that he was able to become a full-time author. He wrote nearly a hundred books, novels and non-fiction. He also wrote under other names, and I believe that his daughter has carried on one of his detective series that were penned under the name of Max Hennessey. John died quite a few years ago. He never lost his affection for Rotherham.
Another Rotherham product who was a successful author (not, perhaps, as famous as Harris) was A. Arthur Eaglestone, who for many years lived at Hague Road, Rawmarsh. Arthur attended an elementary school in Rawmarsh and started work in a local steelworks; he later worked at Stubbin Colliery, where I believe he was a timekeeper, and it was during this time that, under the name of Roger Dataller, he produced "A Pitman's Notebook". He then won a miner's scholarship to Nee College,Oxford, and he came back to Rotherham, to work for the WEA as a tutor in literature. His other works included "A Pitman Looks at Oxford", "Oxford into Coalfield", and two novels --"Uncouth Swain" and "Steel Saraband". With T.A. Lockett, his son in law, he wrote "The Rockingham Pottery".
I think he died about 1980. Today, I imagine, he is just about totally forgotten, but he deserves to be on any list of Rotherham's favourite sons --and it might be timely for the Rotherham Advertiser to pen a couple of pieces about Eaglestone and Harris. I wonder: are there any relatives of either man still living in the Rotherham area?
Treatment 07-10-2008, 12:15 He was a 'match' for anyone. You have to be an oldie to get that one.
Nice one !
The chuckle brothers.
