View Full Version : Under TV DVD Recorders
beansforyou 14-10-2005, 08:46 HI,
I keep seeing cheap dvd recorders in the stores, around £100.
I mean ones you'd have under your tv, not pc ones :)
Would I be able to connect the Video player upto one?
And would I be able to connect it to the pc?
I would like to back up my video collection onto dvd, as I have hundreds.
OR...
Could I buy a DVDRW for my PC, and connect the video player upto that?
Thanks for any advice :)
DaBouncer 14-10-2005, 08:48 Where do you see these?
You can get them cheaper anyway from like £79 from www.blankdiscshop.co.uk
Yes you can hook a VCR up to them and you can connect most to your PC (usually through USB or Firewire).
You can connect your video to your dvd recorder. We have done that and have transferred all our home videos onto dvd. You'll have to check what lead you need though.
Just thought I'd add that we have backed up a lot of our bought videos onto dvd but there is some that you can't as they are crypted but you won't know if they are until you try to record them.

You need to buy a SMART SCART lead that will fix that issue, do a web search, lots of online stores sell them.
ToryCynic 14-10-2005, 10:49 Yes, yes and yes - you connect it up to the PC - I'd recommend the former - DVDRW --> VCR.
If certain films have encryption built-in them, then you'd have to buy a 'copy box' - illegal, sits on top of the equipment - source AV in one side, and where you want to record in the other side of the box.
Of course these are illegal shouldn't be bought - ;).
Try e*cough* Bay.
Note: You'll have to buy DVD + discs for your recordings.
melthebell 14-10-2005, 19:25 ive seen a nice, cheap dvd recorder with jpg, mp3, divx, mpg playback for £129 :)
i neeeeeeeed one, trouble is ive forgotten where i saw it now :P
alchresearch 14-10-2005, 21:45 Richer Sounds? (http://ws4.richersounds.com/productlist.php?cda=productlist&sgroup=DVDRECORDERS)
beansforyou 14-10-2005, 22:22 I think i'd prefer the DVDRW option to be honest, then i've got it in my PC *drool*...I need to get out more *hangs head in shame*
If anyone is interested, the cheap ex-catalogue store at the bottom of the Moor (not Home Bargains *shudder* ) Has a DVD Recorder/Video COmbi unit in for £119, which I thought was pretty good, esp if your video recorder is on the way out....like mine is.
Dibs ~ Yes your right about encryption, but if say 'Hyperthetically' you've already copied said pre-recorded video tapes onto another VHS tape successfully, it won't be a problem recording it onto DVD...
Also, if your video recorder is an older model which doesn't support Encryption, then you will be able to record off of it (both the cassette and the hardware have to support Encryption for it to work)
Although from what I can make out, if the machine you have copied it onto the DVD with does support encryption, the resulting DVD will be encrypted and you won't be able to record from that?
*Thanks to the really interesting guy @ Maplin for the above info *

I bought a DVD recorder with HDD today. Is it possible to record one channel off of sky whilst watching another one?

Macrovision removers aren't illegal and they're available from plenty of UK companies :)
You can get a decent one for £20
chocotiger 13-12-2005, 22:44 I could do with some advice on what to look for and what is needed on a DVD recorder.
Does any one own a Daewoo DVD recorder??
Currys are selling them at the moment for £79.99 and Im thinking of buying one.
I would be using it to record TV and transfer old video tapes of my kids on to DVD.
beansforyou 13-12-2005, 22:52 I read a thread somewhere about dvd recorders, and the media you use, I think basically what I picked up was that as long as you stick with DVDR- and DVDRW- your pretty safe (instead of DVDR+ DVDRW+ )
Richer sounds have a nice Panasonic in, which i've got my beady eye on

only if you have sky+, as you get 2 feeds into your box from your dish, one recording feed, and one for watching.
fnkysknky 14-12-2005, 15:59 Anyone after a bargain might want to check Aldi out tomorrow - Wed 15/12/2005. 80GB Twin Tuner Personal Video Recorder with Freeview for £99.99 which is an absolute bargain. Twin tuner means you can watch one channel while recording another and it's 80gb hdd will hold a fair whack as well as being able to pause live TV.
Don't know much about the brand (Technosonic) but it could be worth taking a risk and it seems there's a fair few people gonna be down there first thing.
melthebell 14-12-2005, 18:35 ive just bought a sum vision 1000 dvd recorder from bigpockets for £97
records to both dvd+ and dvd-
plays jpg, mp3 as well as the other usual suspects AND divx/mpg too :)
im copying all my old videos onto dvd with it
beansforyou 14-12-2005, 23:27 I think we're definately sticking with the Panasonic, it's £129.50 in JOhn Lewis (cheapest I've found this model)
Apparently richer sounds do the same model but region free for another tenner, IMO they probably just give you a bit of paper with a code on to put in your remote, as it's the same model no. player.
