View Full Version : I have a spider who lives on my van
Cranberry 13-10-2005, 13:13 The spider doesn't belong to me but it lives by the wing mirror and has built a web that hangs between the wing mirror and the van body.
Then when I am driving the web catches plenty of tiny flies while the spider hides behind the mirror so it doesn't get blown off. When the van's parked the spider comes out and has a feed and tidies up any repairs that need doing. Gets more food like this than if it just relied on a web in a garden.
I think when it rains the spider takes cover underneath the sill. It lives quite happily on my van and I like to think we co-exist.
Somehow I think there's a message or deeper meaning in this - would anyone like to suggest what it could be?

That somebody doesn't know how the forum 'search' facility works? ;)
Try 'wing mirror spiders'

ROFL
Maybe you could ask the spider to a meal sometime, maybe buy it flowers with green fly on?
You never know? We could have our first insect/Human marriage on the forum?
Good luck.
P.S. Don't forget some spiders eat partners whilst 'making babies' ;)
Cranberry 13-10-2005, 13:25 Just checked it out and it didn't really develop into much particularly as it started off anti-spider.
Suppose what I was after was some sort of thought on man and urban life, nature making use of man's creations, a live and let live philosophy, the benefits of messiness - that sort of direction.
Cranberry 13-10-2005, 13:26 You're a bit conventional suggesting marriage aren't you? What's wrong with just living together and besides why should I have to make the first move?
Oh okay then....
I co-exist with a beagle :) He's particularly good at hoovering up spilt food, processing the waste fat off bacon butties, and demanding we both get some fresh air once in a while. He also makes a great hotwater bottle if Mr Strix is away
That sort of thing, Cranberry? :)
Lickable 13-10-2005, 13:31 You could go about it in a differnt way, and charge the spider lodgings... After all you are feeding it and escorting it all around the city on a daily basis.
Lickable 13-10-2005, 13:33 On a more erm... serious note. Do you mean like... the spider has to deal with the life and surroundings it now has?
For example, a butterfly, may have to develop a pattern similar to, lets say a coca cola can, so it can still camouflage in todays surroundings?
Cranberry 13-10-2005, 13:37 Strix perhaps I should just try burning a joss stick and meditate on something or other. Either that or go and watch The Tree of Wooden Clogs again.
Lickable - if I start charging for lodgings it might turn out the spider is an illegal immigrant or entitled to benefits and then I'd start having problems with the council which could be more trouble than it's worth. And how would it affect my motor insurance - be practical!

 does not compute
Lickable 13-10-2005, 13:40 You could just charge it for webspace... ;)
Cranberry 13-10-2005, 13:40 Lickable - yeah you've got it. Something about how we can appreciate the natural world and do our bit so that it can co-exist without the need for great big changes in our lives- pollution is a different discussion.
I used to have one inside the van, it did a brilliant job in keeping any flying insects away from Rlass, and it had the added bonus of Rlass watching it all the time in case it attacked her :gag:
Is this yours? (http://www.leierwood.com/minART/cars/spider-1.jpg)
Cranberry 13-10-2005, 13:43 What's the going rate for webspace? I wouldn't want to exploit and be deceitful.
Lickable 13-10-2005, 13:43 This thread needs an award...
Would that be a web award ?
:D
Cranberry 13-10-2005, 13:49 Strix nice picture but it's not mine. My red van has moss along some of the sills. I usually leave the doors unlocked to save window replacement. Any thief would quickly abandon it as among it's many faults the back door (tailgate?) has a habit of flying open.
It's good for doing chicken runs though.
Cranberry 13-10-2005, 13:56 Strix back to your 'does not compute' post. Nice to see you have a dog. Was thinking that some sort of man and the environment discussion would get going but that's ok.
If you haven't seen the Tree of Wooden Clogs - it always appears or used to anyway in the top ten of foreign language films. Lasts about three hours and is about the lives of medieaval villagers - once seen is enough.
Pass me some oily fish.
Jimbob1989 13-10-2005, 15:31 :D We have a spider that does the same on my mums car, but i tell her to speed up when I see him on his web and he spins like an acrabat.
Herbaliser 13-10-2005, 15:33 I've got one too! Saw it for the first time yesterday. I thought it'd be quite small, but it's one of those with a big bum.
the_rudeboy 13-10-2005, 15:36 I've got a wing mirror spider too.

I think thats a lovely philosophy - co-existing, live and let live etc.
:)
Shame we cant use that way of thinking in all avenues of life. :(
Pseudonym 13-10-2005, 15:57 I've got 3 of the damn things that it seems I can't evict, they even survive going through car-washes! There's one in each electric wing-mirror housing and one under the rear number plate somewhere... It doesn't do my street-cred any good at all, having to drive a sports coupé festooned with ruddy cobwebs!
Cranberry 14-10-2005, 08:24 Do spiders hibernate?
Just wondering what will happen to it when we start to get frosts - suspect it will move into my van and live off food crumbs and micro insects.
DragonofAna 14-10-2005, 08:34 Have to agre with Ellybum on this one. Rather than just spiders we should stretch out and expand this to all living things.
Live and let live is a wonderful philosophy. Unfortunately there are too many folk with problems and issues to let it work.
Spiders are our friends - but watch the females. They have a tendancy to destroy their mates as already mentioned previously.
PS. I think we all have wing mirror spiders. What is interesting is how they survive the car wash.

Classic Rock 14-10-2005, 11:21 I had one for weeks and weeks, it was always there and kept busy doing its repairs. The web snapped off once when I was driving along and I saw the spider fall. I thought I'd lost it, but it was there again on the next trip.
I sold the car last month and told the dealer there was a spider and could he look after it and make sure it was OK. The dealer nodded and agreed!!
In retrospect, I must have sounded really stupid saying that, but then again, the dealer was equally dumb for agreeing!
I'm spiderless at the moment.
