Gracie Barra sheffield and Forged Mixed Martial Arts are the premiere place to train MMA and BJJ in the city. With Active Fighters at both Pro and semi pro divisions. Come down and meet some of the guys everyone is friendly and welcoming.

What do you want to get out of MMA? When you say styles do you mean MMA styles like BJJ, wrestling, Thai and boxing? or more traditional styles.

Sheffield benefits from having some awesome "non traditional" martial arts venues. BJJ at The Forge is awesome. There is also Wicker Camp, a long running Muay Thai gym that boasts the most champions out of any UK club.

That being said, I've heard Castle Black Belt Academy teaches an "awesome" mix of "super martial arts", ey Ross! ;)

There's a MMA centre somewhere near Malin Bridge, Hillsborough, not sure exactly where.

That sounds like Paul Powers Gym, can't remember the name but he advertises it in the "what's on" section in the back of The Star.

Others that sometimes post on here are Wild Wild MMA and Sheffield Shootfighters, both at Hillsborough area or there abouts.

Yep, it is Paul Powers now you mention it. One of our instructors (Craig Burke) has his own gym in Barnsley but its probably too far to travel.

I fully agree, anybody who does Kickboxing or MMA knows Craig, and he's a former Commonwealth Champion in Karate (Sport Karate). Are you familiar with another instructor from the Association, Paul Newby ? (World Champion) based in Bradford, search Olympik Dream.

Barnlsey is not too far, I used to travel up to Dewsbury to train MMA years ago as it was the only place open on a Saturday morning that I could find.

Its not too far for the likes of ourselves who are used to travelling to get the best training available, but for most complete beginners they tend to stick locally from experience, but you never know.

Ha Ha I know Paul Newby, he beat one of my fighters on the undercard of the K-1 UK tournament .
The REAL K-1 UK that is LOL

Craig Burke supports my shows and he has one of his Karate Champions Adam Hadfield fighting for a North Area title on my next show!!!

Craig & Adam both originate from Shindo Kai Karate Association. Craig & Paul were appointed as Northern England Squad coaches last year by Wayne Otto (9 times World Champion) Paul has a massive Fitness unit that he shares with other instructors.

I could do with getting back into MMA just to keep fit, what do I need to bring? Just shorts and a T-shirt or do I need to get some MMA gloves off ebay or something?

cheers

Paul Powers' gym is now at the old Deerstalker pub in Stannington. Its only a few minutes from its old venue at Malin Bridge.
