How can you get rid of the smell of sweaty sandals? I have tried washing them even putting them in the washing machine, but within a day or two the stink comes back.

Just to save the muppets saying it My feet are clean!

I have read somewhere that sprinkling in bicarb of soda and leaving overnight before hoovering out does the trick, dunno if it works though.

From eHow.com :

How to Remove Shoe Odor
Can't bear the thought of sliding on your favorite pair of shoes because they stink from the last wearing? It can take diligence and time to remove shoe odor, but your shoes are worth the trouble.

Steps:
1. Wash shoes thoroughly - inside and out - with soapy detergent and bleach.

2. Sprinkle the insides of the shoes liberally with bicarbonate or baking soda. Leave overnight, and shake out before wearing again.

3. Spray shoes daily with disinfectants and deodorizers specially designed for foot odor problems.

4. Apply foot powder specially designed for foot odor problems to feet and/or shoes daily.

I would also try bi-carb, put your sandels in a plastic bag, sprinkle in the bi-carb, seel the bag and leave for twenty four hours, hope it works!

Purchase Canesten cream from the pharmacy counter.

Rub in sparingly - it's a fungicide

(Much less faffing, and no bleachy smell ;) )

I have something which you might try which is what some motorcyclists do to stop their gloves stinking.

Motorcycle gloves smell quite bad when they have been used for a long time because of bacteria which comes out of skin. Being leather, they would be damaged if they were washed in a washing machine.
What you have to do is wrap each glove in clean paper and put it in the freezer over night. This kills all the bacteria in question and the smell goes.
When you get the gloves out you have to leave them at room temperature to naturally thaw out for a couple of days.

There is no reason you couldn't do the same thing with sandals, although I would probably put each one in an open bag rather than paper..

Have come across people who do the freezer thing with smelly trainers also.

Thanks for all the useful answers folks  I think Muddy wins the prize for the one most likely to be tried

Lestat wins the booby prize (as usual) for the least constructive, but only because it's the only booby he get's close to these days. :D

Odor eaters because what's causing the smell is the residual left after contact between your foot, sock and trainer.

Yes I'm so bored I've written the above.

What has socks and trainers got to do with it?

He's talking about sandals, therefore no socks and no trainers.

muddycoffee you're right I've been denying who I truly am. Is there a much better taste than a Fray Bentos - Jamie Oliver you can stick your grated nutmeg over spaghetti bolognese, just pass me a value tin of processed peas and a bag of McCain oven chips to go with the pie - and bring me my remote control.
