View Full Version : New wing chun kung fu class, anyone interested?
joeblackler 12-10-2005, 16:15 Hi to everyone,
i have just moved to sheffield and as an experienced student of the direct wing chun kung fu association i will be looking to start a new class soon. everyone with an interest in learning wing chun will be welcome. it is likely the class will be fairly central to sheffield city centre ( i am in the process of negotiating a room). if you are interested get in touch! either through the forum or my email is jblackler23@hotmail.co.uk i will try to answer any of your queries.
my approach to wing chun is very direct and is aimed at being as practical as possible. the class is held in an informal atmosphere.
Hi Joe
a few questions for you if you don't mind:
Will you spend a lot of time practising the forms?
Will you incorporate any fitness work?
Will you include any kind of sparring (I'm not referring to sticky hands when i say sparring)
does the direct wing chun kung fu association have a web site?
thanks
joeblackler 13-10-2005, 12:49 thanks for the questions Anvil.
wouldn't spend ages on the forms. in a two hour class form would probably be practiced for about 20 - 30 minutes. i usually split this between the begining and the end of the lesson to relate practical applications practiced during the lesson to where they are in the form.
the room i have at the moment is quite small so initially fitness wouldn't be emphasised much. however if numbers were increased i would look to get the larger room (there are 2 rooms where i plan to train) which allows for more exercises (eg jogging to warm up, press ups etc). all that said the lesson will focus alot more on actually doing wingchun.
sparring? depends what you mean. in the chi sau and lap sau free attack is practiced which provides the skills (not all of them ) to fight effectively. when a student is good (ish) with regard to lap and chi free then we would wear small gloves head guards and gum shields and have a 'controlled' fight. the idea is for it to be more like fighting rather than point scoring (no offence to competition bouts, an adrimable skill).
check out this web site; directwingchun.co.uk
theres a video clip on there if youv'e got broadband have a look. my class will probably be on a monday evening
intooblivion 13-10-2005, 12:52 What exactly is this ? Sounds interesting but would you want total beginners?!
Always like to try new things!
joeblackler 13-10-2005, 12:56 Yes, people of any experience/level are welcome. initially students just starting out would learn basic techniques and drills. no one would be thrown in out of their depth.
intooblivion 13-10-2005, 12:57 Sounds good, still don't know what it is fully but will find out! Please let me know if you go ahead with this I've a few friends who would be interested too. Thanks
joeblackler 13-10-2005, 13:01 the martial art i practice and teach is 'wing chun' it is a practical and direct martial art that advocates straight line attack as opposed to hook punches and spinning back kicks etc, there is alot of short fast continuous punching and kicks usually don't go above the wiast.
Sounds good Joe - I'm not aware of anyone else in the local area teaching that lineage (although i could be wrong).
Good luck with it.
joeblackler 17-10-2005, 14:23 Hi Anvil,
You seem to be quite clued up about the local martial arts scene here in sheffield. if you know of any good ways to advertise other than on this forum and via posters maybe you could let me know. cheers
Also i imagine that once i get settled i am going to be looking for somewhere else to train myself. i like to train in a friendly atmosphere but with people who train hard. Possibly westling/ground fighting or something very sparring/fighting orientated.
If anyone has any ideas... thanks.
Freddylee 17-10-2005, 15:57 Hi Joe
You would always be welcome at the AFK kickboxing club.
Our club do classes both at the wellington street boxing gym in the city centre and at the sheffield hallam uni.
www.sheffieldkickboxing.com
Farhad (the instructor) is an open minded guy and we have a lot of freindly martial arts guys from different styles training there.
We do a lot of sparring there as well as bagwork and padwork.
Hmmm never sparred a wing chun guy before but as long as you dont be kicking in the groin or fingering in peoples eyes i guess its all cool.
Hi Joe
I'm sure there's lots of stuff that goes off here in Sheffield that I'm not aware of, but i studied Wing Chun for 2 years (Chu Shong Tin lineage) at the Chinese Community Centre. There's at least one other Wing Chun club in Sheffield (Carlisle Street) and i believe the guy that teaches there is a student of Samuel Kwok (although i could be wrong). I believe that Wong Shun Leung has/had quite a reputation as a fighter, so I'm sure your club will be a welcome addition to the Wing Chun scene.
With regard to advertising, the BJJ club where i currently train as got several members from posts on this forum, as did the Wing Chun club where i trained previously. Other clubs advertise in the Sheffield Star and the Sheffield Telegraph, and as Sheffield as a thriving student population, targeting Universities etc. might be worth while.
In terms of wrestling/grappling, Sheffield has 3 BJJ clubs, 3 Judo clubs, one shootfighting club and several traditional Ju Jitsu clubs. There's also a JKD club that comprises a grappling element.
Sparring (rolling/randori) is central to BJJ - all techniques are practised against a fully resistant opponent. The club i train at is a Royce Gracie Jiu Jitsu Network club, but the time (Monday evenings) might conflict with your plans! (although there a plans afoot for one of our instructors to begin teaching on an additional evening - watch this space). Techniques taught are predominalty groundwork orientated, however there's an increasing amount of time being spent on stand-up techniques as BJJ as evolved alongside NHB competitions.
joeblackler 19-10-2005, 10:57 cheers for all the info.
i am a student at sheffield hallam so i ll probably be down at the kick boxing class when i get my sports membership sorted.
i'm quite interested in the grappling aswell so if a class comes up on another night that would be good. i'll keep an eye out
Freddylee 21-10-2005, 15:19 Hi Joe
why not come down to the boxing gym classes meanwhile?
or for the hallam classes you could always pay on the door.
I do that you see ,paY ON the door but mostly i go to the boxing gym cl;asses. Better equipment , all the bags , boxing ring ,..etc more one on one instructor time which you dont et at many other clubs.

emptycup 03-11-2005, 18:06 Hello,
I am looking for more places to train myself. I started at Ponds Forge when the class there was around. Sifu Phil Jones used to teach there under James Sinclair (I think he started out with Samuel Kwok).
Went to the classes in Carlisle Street ages ago, but tried to go back yesterday and there was no one there :(
Hoping that someone on here knows current training times. If I can make it on Monday I will, I may also bring along a guy from work who used to train with me (he's into Tai Chi now and a bit of Goju-Ryu).
Would you say that your training methods are based on the practical aspects of WC? I can see the value in all aspects of WC training, but see no point in shirking from the ultimate aim in undertaking a martial art-defending yourself.
Cheers!
Hey, Im interested in the class, I did a little (about 3 days) a few years back, and the tutor (I believe it was James Sinclair) moved or something, so i never got to finish...
joeblackler 04-11-2005, 10:47 Cheers for the interest guys hope you can make it this monday.
Practical application of wing chun is my main focus when training. i won't practice a drill if there is no practical value in it.
i also think it is very important to 'test' what you are learning other wise how can its practical value be known. when i say test i mean conditions as close to actual fighting as possible (but still controlled) not just in chi sau.
