View Full Version : Know any good indian take aways?
does anyone know of any good indian take aways? i live near crystal peaks area. so nearer the better.
or does anyone have a favourite take away for pizza, chinese etc??
little india at gleadless townend has always been good.
or the large one at crystal peaks amraj i think is gorgeous but quite expensive
i thought about the amraj, everyone says its nice, but do you know if it does take away?
as far as i know it does but not at weekends. saying that the last time we had a take away was when it was still in the main crystal peaks building near the cinema. maybe they have a website know it is all posh .
shouldnt be talking about currys i have just come back from weight watchers it is making my mouth water !!!!!!!!!
discovery 12-10-2005, 20:13 The MANGLA on Spital Hill just up from the Wicker Arches.
It may not be one of the best areas in town but people travel from far and wide for their meals, both to eat in and takeaways - and the prices are soooo cheap.
If you want to eat in there's a pub accross the road where you can buy jugs of beer to take over to the Mangla (as they don't serve alcohol but don't mind you taking your own).
Its a great meal and a really cheap night. Don't expect anything fancy though, its just your basic sort of place but clean and proper with an open kitchen.
Akash - currently running an ad on here - are okay, and ded cheap
MumphitMan 12-10-2005, 20:28 The Manzil at Broomhill, two take away menus one vegi and one for the rest of us. Top food very reasonable. Free delivery over £7 0114 2684685. Curry tonight at Heeley also good and very prompt. Tel, text or email order.
Yellowrose 12-10-2005, 20:54 Ive been a bit disappointed with Amraj last couple of times I used them. Lots of sauce with not many bits of meat! They may have improved though, because its nearly a year since I used them last. When you have two disappointing ones you tend not to go again.
malay2001 12-10-2005, 20:58 Mangala - for the most authentic curry.
Yellowrose 12-10-2005, 22:03 Where is Mangala. Is it in Woodlouse?
youwhatref 13-10-2005, 05:36 Lancers on Birley Moor Rd is worth a try.
Obakosh at Norton Lees is superb. Just re-opened under New Management by the Gent who opened up the Star Of India in Attercliffe and also Vijays in the City Centre.
You can even get a Gold Card which enables you to claim 10% off any future orders.:)

Lee's Chinese off Birley Spa Lane in Hackenthorpe (on the shops behind the Hogs Head). Very very nice Foo Yung.
For other chinese meals then I suggest Wonder Kitchen in Swallownest. I don't have a clue what the road is called, but it's next to a pub, and opposite a place that makes curtains! Sorry! It's an open kitchen and they cook everything while you wait (or ready if you telephone it in).
Can't help on the indian though, my other half doesn't really like to eat it so I tend to make my own chicken tikka at home.

We got take away from there tonight. I cannot believe the amount of food that came out of that box for £20
We like Akash :D

Menu for anybody who's interested (http://www.akashcurry.com/index.php?p=p_6)
hevydevy 20-11-2005, 16:58 Just been to Bhajis at Woodhouse, not for an indian, but for a donner Kebab (don't ask why, just fancied one)- I walked out in disgust five minutes later with a refund as they when they were doing my kebab, they just picked up a load of cold meat, with so much fat on it it was white (presumably this was from last night as they didn't have an elephant leg on the skewer), and then stuck it in the microwave, eeeuugghhh.
If I had gone in and said "Could I have some microwave-reheated kebab meat from last night please" there would have been no problem...
littleboo 20-11-2005, 17:15 Rubeez at Gleadless townend is a great indian....... Never had a bad meal yet!
I really can't say enough great things about the AZAD TANDOORI, 991 Ecclesall Road at Bannercross (tel. 2670709). I've tried plenty of takeways, but the Azad is such unblievable quality! all fresh ingedients, rich sauces, TONS of top quality chicken / meat, ENORMOUS portions, and at a ridiculous price - they're cheap anyway, but they knock off a further 20% for collection. This brings their prices into the realm of the stupid... honestly, I have no idea how this place produces such gorgeous food and makes a profit... I swear it's a front for something.....
Well I declare my lifelong fidelity to the Azad!

AlquarUK 21-11-2005, 13:47 +++My favorite (for the last 10 years) has been the Shapla. service is usually friendly, the food never looks anything special but it always tastes awsome!! :)
- - - I heard the one at the top of Spring Vale Road (blue sign, unsure of name) got shut down for re-using uneaten food on plates after being cleared from peoples tables. can somone confirm either way and if so would avoid!!
The WORST curry I have ever had was Bhalti King in Broomhill. Utter crap, plus the restaurant was full of tiny black flies. I believe this also got done by food hygene.
finally the one at the top of walkley/bottom crooks (above the petrol station on the hill, further up on right)
Food was ok but service terrible, Arrogant, rude and cleared our plates away while were still eating to rush us out.
went in a second time, 4 of them stood at the bar/counter. Made us walk accross the busy restaurant to tell us had stopped serving instead of having someone on the door. will never use either of these last 3 restaurants again!
Shapla is great!! :)
I certainly wouldn't recomend Lancers on Birley, I got quite bad food poisening when I got a take away from there.
bhunaboy 21-11-2005, 14:47 I agree that The Shapla is the best I've had. The raita is so good you could drink the stuff.
Rubeez at Townend is poor, Little Indian is much better.
And as for Lancers :gag:
I know its a negative reply and the wrong side of town but does anyone agree that Bayleaves in Ecclesfield has gone downhill? When they first opened it was fantastic - the amount of meat in the curries etc, and it was "real" chicken not the rubbery stuff you sometimes get! now, even the yoghurt is watered down to the consistancy of skimmed milk!! and not to mention the fact that each time you pick up your order, you get home to find they have forgotten to put the salad in for the starter ahhhhh!
Has anyone been to the indian at the bottom of london road yet?
