View Full Version : What's happening to Bed?

it's suddenly having a 'refurb' out of the blue and as a result cancelling a load of nights. Surely if you were going to have a refurb then you would know about it loads in advance and not have to end up cancelling events. It's not like it even really needed a refurb either.

Sounds a bit dodgy to me and wouldn't surprise me if it closes down.

I was really p***** off cos I was well looking forward to the drum & bass arena night there next month, it had an excellent lineup!

Me too! And Hype at DNBA in March is cancelled too.

Theres loads of rumours going round:

*Mr Raine is leaving Sheff or concentrating on GC1/Gatecrasher global brand
* Its getting turned into student flats
* The lease has run out
* Its a listed building so will be empty

etc

apparently its summat ta do with the dodgy drains that they didn't anticipate needed fixing when they started the refurb, hence the unclear messages.

But Coalition has a massive nght planned at Zero on Sat Feb 21st!

Been past recently and there is definitely work going on in there so doesn't look like it's abandoned, should be open again in March.

Agreed. It's needed a refurb for a few years now, that's a proper refurb not just moving the toilets about.

My farvorite rumour was the one about it reopening as GC2. that made me laugh.

I think that the refurb sounds realistic. So does the reopening date of early march.

that club stank of puke and had the worst layout on earth.

Oh I need to get a drink. Erm I'll just have to walk through the entire dancefloor. Oh whats this...in the middle of the club there is a seating area. How nice, oh but why are my feet stuck to the floor...oh great really nice carpet!!

Bed is one of my most hated clubs, I cannot stand the layout. Glad its getting sorted.

Wonder if they'll try and put in one-way systems like in Gatecrasher1...yeah those lasted long!! Idiots.

fnkysknky
26-01-2004, 13:35
Personally I think the layout of Bed was/is great - just needs tarting up a bit and some new carpets that don't stink. Air-con would be more than appreciated too.

26-01-2004, 20:36
If you think the layout of Bed is bad, you wanna try Space in Leeds, thst just pure comical and that place really does require Air Con.

Granted though, Bed does need the refurb if thats what the closure is all about...

26-01-2004, 20:46
Absolutley!
Air conditioning please, puurlease, pretty please.
Ladies loos need sorting too. Yuck! You know what I mean girls.
Tragedy about Drum and Bass Arena and Coalitoin gone monthly too!
Boo Hoo. :nono:

I wouldn't have given a s*** if they had waited until after dnba! I don't think I went there in the summer when the heat inside was really bad.

The layout isn't the best, I've seen FAR worse, and it is good that it's getting a refurb, just so long as they still let dnba in I'm happy! Not really tltted with the most other nights that they have on there.

rossyl
26-01-2004, 22:36
i spose reason i don't like the layout so much is because i expected it to be a great club. in tyerms of music it is, but the actual building is pants. before coming to sheffield i had heard a lot about bed, and was disappointed.

Hmmmm, from what I've heard it's looking less likely Bed will reopen?!?!

Tony
31-01-2004, 14:37
I've heard that BED is definately shut for good.

The sound system and lighting rig have been sold, no replacements are expected. It's gonna be a quiet dark club if it does reopen.

Looks like Mr Raine and Mr Palmer are just gonna spend their time looking after the kiddies in the once great Republic.

Dance music was always better in some warehouse or hanger in the middle of nowhere tho, Crasher could never get close to a real rave experience.

to dispell all the rumours,

there are apparently posters outside saying its closed for a refit and nothing else, ie. its going to reopen (as bed) when its finished!

so all you clubbers wanting the "bed experience" will just have to be patient until the 28th March!

It's looking like it's Mr. Raine's lies again though - useless git. Looks like Bed has about as much future in it as Crasher - none!

Simon Raine is way too interested in how many ££££ he has in the bank. Yes I appreciate it's a business and that is the ultimate goal but a little consideration for the clubbers that made him his money wouldn't go a miss.

So any news on if its for sale etc? Hope they don't trash the interiors so badly that it ends up a financial imposibility like another notorious club owner did.

You mean the old T C Harrrison place next door?

Isn't all that going to make room for a new "Student Village" - flats and stuff?

Hopefully Bed will be bulldozed soon. The place was a dump, but not in a loveable way like Arches is, and had far too many house and generic, mundane club nights.

Jack Yerbody
04-02-2004, 13:41
Utter nonsense. Saturday nights at bed were the only clubbing experience in this northern jungle that even approached the quality of southern nights.

Sorry to be so brutal, but it's true. I'm going to have to start heading to Manchester for an acceptable night out.

fnkysknky
04-02-2004, 17:59
Supposedly they've just renamed the Electric Box (old Plasma Lounge) in GC1 to Bed-room, so it looks like we might still have a mini Bed - not ideal but better than nothing I suppose...

Andy78
04-02-2004, 18:57
I'm not convinced by that idea. Having s1 1dj type peeps, mixed in with bed type peeps, can only get messy.

Jack Yerbody
04-02-2004, 19:02
Utter balls, isnt it? Basics in Leeds, Pacha in London - travelling to nights out will be de rigeur from now on.

Thank god I have an enormous expense account.

Andy78
04-02-2004, 19:05
Utter balls indeed. Unfortunately I don't have such an expense account, as i'm a scummy student. At least there are loads of good nights back home in Liverpool. Gives me a good reason to go back. plus have a home to stay at.

Jack Yerbody

You should have known that clubs like Bed didn't give a flying ***** about their punters from the moment it opened charging £15.

On another tip, once they had Gilles Peterson there and we got turned away by the "fashion police" for (a) Not looking like everyone else or to put in the cherrypickers language "not making enough effort" and (b) for living in Firth Park ?!?!?

It was noticeable how last year they started trying to nick other people's ideas and replicate them.

Clubs like that were a disease. Their death will make everything better. Good riddance.

Not sure how students are going to come to terms with the closure of another nightclub.
Is Counselling available?
Is anyone prepared to sponsor a student suffering withdrawl symptoms?
We must be down to only 20 nightclubs where impoverished students can pay their £10 entry fee to sup overpriced drinks and
vomit the traditional takeway across the pavement.
Of course the alternatives are not especially pleasant.A couple of
pints at the weekend - a nice meal -cinema -ohh and studying!

I'm a Music Promoter in and around Sheffield, I've also heard that it is going to open as a live venue and it wants to take the Leadmill on. Which I think is good.

I think maybe the refurb at Republic was done to 'soften the blow' so to speak, so that bed closing wouldn't be such a loss. The refurb was so hyped up it was untrue though and in the end they didn't do half the things they claimed they were doing, and it certainly seems they didn't spend that 1.5m either. They've moved some of the staff too, some of the Bed bouncers now work at Republic. Don't dare ask them what'd happening though, they terrify me!

crazey
04-04-2004, 20:30
It's so obvious why they've closed Bed! Since they stopped doing 'Gatecrasher' as a main night in the days of Republic, the club has majorly lost money and has become a student cheap hang out. They had the refurb to keep up with the ' Super clubs', but at the same time running head to head with Bed. Bed was the place to be on a Saturday and easily one of the superclubs of the moment.

Meanwhile they've spent thousands on a new refurb of Gatecrasher one, but whilst Bed was still continuing to out do it every Saturday night. Bed also was despratley in need of a whole refurb, broken furniture, dirty carpets and bad drainage problems and would have been heavilycostly. So it's simple why they closed Bed because it was out rivalling it's new sister club Gatecrasher.

Gatecrasher one is a bigger venue, well established with more money making potential. More capacity, more and bigger bars, bigger cloakroom, equals thousands. Thats why nights like Hed Kandi etc have gone there. They knew that they were the crowd pullers and in a bigger and better club there's more money making potential.

It is sad that Bed has closed but they have been very wise in there decision making. They close Bed in it's hay day, before it went down hill and known as a dirty club. I was a regular Saturday night clubber, every Saturdays after work, I loved it, but where else was there to go really? Thats why it was so good because there was no where else to go, good music and everyone you knew was there aswell.

That way it's the talk of the town raising the profile of Bed and Gatecrasher. It hasn't hurt Bed because they've left on a high and it's now gatecrashers turn to reap the rewards!

Tony
05-04-2004, 07:34
The other big reason is that they own The Republic but only rented Bed.

crazey
05-04-2004, 09:04
true Tony! Think they had a 25 year lease on the club. Did you know that in the early days bed used to be an M & S? Strange eh?

Has it closed down for good now or what ??????

I want it to reopen just for school disco on wed i loved it theyre although its starting up down at corp it just wount be the same again

jennifer

i walk past it regularly and there is no sign of any activity!!! Still closed.

Andy78
08-06-2004, 00:17
Starting it at corp is going back to the old days when it started at unit (the same place as corp).

My personal angle on bed is that there is no reason for them to open it again whatsoever. GC lease the place. It cost's them more than its worth. They only had a couple of big nights on a month, which took money away from GC1. So if you think about it logically, keeping bed closed, keeps away competition (from the same people), therefore making more money for the gatecrasher corporation. They're, just keeping it closed till their lease runs out, then it'll be a free building for anyone who wants it. there has been talk about it being turned into student flats, but unless they leave the building as it is, that won't happen as it's a listed building.

just my theory on the situation!

Andy78
08-06-2004, 00:35
One thing to add to that, i think bed closing has been the best thing to happen in Sheffield for years. look at all of the decent clubs expanding now. Urban Gorilla, Pin up Club, Ahead, etc...
Similar to when cream closed in Liverpool, the city actually benefited from it. a lot of really good clubs became huge. It's about time something happened in Sheffield. I'm made up, as now there's more choice for a night out than there has been for years.

Bedhead
08-06-2004, 07:55
i like the variety of course but i still miss the fact that there is one relatively large club where everybody goes to - was more of a clubbing community in the early days of Bed which i miss

of course that could never be sustained, not in a place like sheffield you can only have too much of a good thing, hence its demise and well lets face it, it was pretty crap at the end

Emilychee
08-06-2004, 09:48
Just read the SheffieldBase article with the quote from ex-Bed DJ Dino. He said that there are no decent house nights left in Sheffield just because Bed has closed!

I went to Scuba on Saturday and the music was great, also been to the Pin Up Club and that was cool too.

I think a live music venue to rival leadmill would be ace!
But sadly ive heard rumours who ever brought DC Harrison is trying to buy bed and turn it in to flats. . . .boo!
