We used to have no problems when changing the old-style gas canisters, (puncture type) but since the new style canisters (thread type) we have had lots of problems, with not getting a good thread, gas leaking everywhere, bottles not working, etc.

On a recent trip, our neighbour received serious burn injuries when changing the bottle and the gas spat and was ignited by another canister. The scene is something I would not wish anyone to witness and the tent was destroyed, along with the contents. He also said he had experienced problems with the new style canisters.

I don't trust the new style as much as the old. What does anyone else think?

Also, I guess, it's appropriate to warn others here, never to change gas canisters inside the tent.

Personally, I wouldn't have one near my tent, never mind inside, and I usually use them in a canopy for cooking, away from my tent.

have used pierceable ones in our Camping Gaz stove and Camping Gaz lantern for at least 10 years - only ever had one issue when changing the canister in the lantern when the thread jammed just before a good seal was sorted. Was in the garage with the doors closed and it was 'exciting' getting out . . . there was some grit in the thread (doh!)

Common sense tells me changing a canister outside is the right thing to do - so no excuse for my little adventure

Have a Camping Gaz suitcase stove that uses resealable aerosol shaped canisters and an MSR remote canister stove that uses the little threaded resealable canisters - never had a problem with either (yet, touch wood)

I alway buy decent quality gas kit and branded canisters - in my view this stuff is potentially too dangerous to buy cheap
