View Full Version : The "Quote" system - how does it work?
Despite having several attempts and then using the search facility, I cannot suss out how to use the "quote"system to quote a previous post.
When I click onto the blank space for quote all I get is a dull thud.
Everyone else is using it successfully...so it must be me, I know!
I would be grateful for help.
It takes too long to type out the quote and it doesn't look so good if I use cut and paste.
Thanks.
Click on blank space for quote? What's that mean then?
Click on the button marked 'Quote' to the lower right hand corner of the post and then type below it. Which bit do you get stuck at?
I think Floe might be clicking into the quote itself in the blank space around it, instead of the quote box it's self to bring it up .
BrainThrust 11-10-2005, 11:35 To use the quote function, you have to use a bit of code.
If you click the quote button on a post it brings up a reply with the post already in it, if you read the code around it that might explain what you have to do.
Don't forget to end quote too though!
Wilf
EDIT:I let a boffin sort this one out properly, I doubt I can explain it well enough.

Thanks. When you click the quote button you get that post in a new reply box. You should post your comments after that.
So in this example I clicked the quote button which brought up a new reply box. I then typed all this gibbins after it.
You can edit the contents of the quote as long as you don't change anything that is between square brackets such as [quote]

Ah, now that would be your signature. Some unique, uplifting words of wisdom like mine! :D
This needs to be done from your profile. Go to Your Options then Edit Profile and type your entry into the signature box.
Good Luck.
EDIT - beaten to it!

Ah! You mean a signature! (http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/misc.php?s=&action=faq&page=1#signature) :)
The help section (http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/misc.php?s=&action=faq) has lots of useful tips.

I hope that this works.
I am following your advice, Tony!
It looks like I wasn't the only ignoramus in the Forum. I'll try out the edit function for quotes once I have successfully mastered this one.
Thank you for the help. It must be boring when someone hasn't got the hang of what is probably a very simple feature of the Forum.
As you can see, I have learned how to use the smilies!
:)

Sheffield Forum vB code explained (http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/misc.php?s=&action=bbcode)
Have fun
I understand how the quote button works, but what do the other two next to it do?
There's q+ and qr and despite experimenting with them I can't get them to do anything.

Have a look here (http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/faq.php?s=&do=search&q=quote&match=all&titlesonly=0)
Ah, now I get it, thanks :)
I don't really see the benefit of the qr button, but q+ will be useful.
The "Quote" system - how does it work?
Sheff forum seems to be vbulletin based (forum software released/beta'd 1999 ish). You use the same 'commands' on most forums these days. They resemble the very simplist of HTML codes.
http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/misc.php?do=bbcode
Click here for a good, though not fully comprehensive list of forum commands. There can be the odd difference between forums on which commands are turned on. I was going to give an example on how to write your own quote without using the button (required for more than 1 quote per post), but that link does it better.

Not on here - it has a multiquote button (q+)
Looks like you guys have been beavering away. Such things only encourage people to quote entire posts. Better to learn vbulletin markup by hand.
Perhaps you mods could add an image into post button as well ;)
