Our upright freezer keeps going wrong, so we're buying a new one. Unfortunately new recycling rules mean that the retailer we're buying a new freezer from won't dispose of our old one for us (like they used to do) and it's too big to take to the local dump (sorry, 'Recycling centre') by car.
According to the retailer the city Council should collect old freezers for free, but I can't find any mention of this on the council website.
Anyone know if this is the case and if so which department I need to contact?
Phone Onyx who are the council's subcontractor for domestic waste 0114 273 4567
They will collect (but may charge).

We have just purchased a new upright fridge, after ours packed in last week. After looking round at many retailers in sheff / Rotherham, we found some wont take your old fridge away but some will at fee of aprox £14. In the end we chose a retailer that would take it away for a modest fee, because we simply didnt want the hassle ourselves or having to leave the old fridge in our front garden till the council decided to collect it.
The council do collect them for free
call the switchboard for the number
Sell it in the Admag to a poor unsuspecting victim.

Or dump it round the back of the dog track. Seems to be what everybody else does with old fridges, sofas, washing machines etc.
I dont actually mean do that.

Are you allowed to dump it in the snow because it's white and there's a chance that no one will notice it?

Thanks for the (mostly :D ) helpful comments.
Found out that the council (actually Onyx) do collect freezers for free if you ring them and ask.

Do they still do the offers where if you buy a new fridge/freezer and have it delivered they will knock £30 or so of the price if you let them disable your old one and take it away? Think the offer was by British Gas in Comet stores - can't be sure though. Mind you Comet's delivery charge is probably £40 knowing them.

Ive just rang Sheffield Council about my unwanted fridge/freezer. They told me to leave it outside my house and they will collect it within the next 5 days free of charge. For their number go on their web site and click on 'contacts', then follow links for waste/environment. They told me I could also take it to my local 'dump it' site.
